Swami Vivekananda is the patriot-saint of India. He brought Vedanta to the west, and in doing so, opened up the American continent to the concept that there are other legitimate religions outside of the Christian Judaic tradition.

Good summary of Vedantic teachings and philosophies. For more detailed reading on the subject one may want to read the complete works of Swami Vivekananda.

Each chapter in this book is inspirational; it contains the vitality and magic of Swami Vivekananda. You will certainly feel the force of his words in every sentence, and reading this in seriousness will undoubtedly give a new direction to your life.

Meditation by a Master

These are descriptions and explanations of meditation by the famous Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) gathered from his many talks in the Western world. Volume and page from the 8 volume Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda are cited for every selection. The editor has divided the book in half "Meditation according to Yoga" (practical aspects) and "Meditation according to Vedanta" (philosophical aspects).
In the foreward, Christopher Isherwood tells the reader not to be in a hurry to finish the book and take one extract at a time to ponder over. And the editor Swami Chetanananda cautions that this book is not a manual on meditation. A personal program requires the instructions of a qualified teacher who would teach according to the temperament and spiritual advancement of the disciple. These are powerful words, however, for a general audience. Swami Vivekananda was born to carry the Vedanta message to the Western world.
