About the Author
Steffen W. Schmidt is a professor of political science at Iowa State University. He grew up in Colombia, South America, and has studied in Colombia, Switzerland, and France. He has a B.A. from Rollins College and obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York, in public law and government. Schmidt has published fourteen books and over one hundred and thirty articles in scholarly journals and is the recipient of numerous prestigious teaching prizes, including the Amoco Award for Lifetime Career Achievement in Teaching and the Teacher of the Year award. He is a pioneer in the use of web-based and real-time video courses and is a member of the American Political Science Association's section on Computers and Multimedia. He is known as "Dr. Politics" for his extensive commentary on US politics in US and international media. He is a weekly blogger for Gannett, comments on CNN en Espanol and Univision as well as WNYC, New York. He's on Facebook (SteffenWSchmidt) and Twitter (DrPolitics).

Mack C. Shelley, II is a professor of political science and statistics at Iowa State University. After receiving his bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, DC, he went on to graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received a master's degree in Economics and a Ph.D. in Political Science. He arrived at Iowa State in 1979. From 1993 to 2002 he served as elected co-editor of the POLICY STUDIES JOURNAL. Shelley has also published numerous articles, books, and monographs on public policy, including THE PERMANENT MAJORITY: THE CONSERVATIVE COALITION IN THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS; BIOTECHNOLOGY AND THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE: A GUIDE TO THE LITERATURE (with William F. Woodman and Brian J. Reichel); AMERICAN PUBLIC POLICY: THE CONTEMPORARY AGENDA (with Steven G. Koven and Bert E. Swanson); and QUALITY RESEARCH IN LITERACY AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES AND GOLD STANDARDS (with Larry Yore and Brian Hand).

Barbara A. Bardes is professor emerita of political science at the University of Cincinnati. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Kent State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. She served as a faculty member in political science and dean of Mundelein College at Loyola University of Chicago. In 1993, she was appointed dean of Raymond Walters College of the University of Cincinnati, where she served until 2003. She returned to the political science department where she held the position of graduate director before retiring. Bardes has written articles on public and foreign policy, and women and politics. She also has co-authored DECLARATIONS OF INDEPENDENCE: WOMEN AND POLITICAL POWER IN 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN NOVELS, THINKING ABOUT PUBLIC POLICY, PUBLIC OPINION: MEASURING THE AMERICAN MIND, and AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS TODAY.

Lynne E. Ford is Associate Provost for Curriculum and Academic Administration and professor of political science at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. She received her B.A. from The Pennsylvania State University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in government and political behavior from the University of Maryland-College Park. Ford's teaching and research interests include women and politics, elections and voting behavior, political psychology, and civic engagement. She has written articles on women in state legislatures, the under-representation of women in political office in the American South, and work-family policy in the United States. She has also authored WOMEN AND POLITICS: THE PURSUIT OF EQUALITY and THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WOMEN AND AMERICAN POLITICS. Ford served as department chair for eight years and she has led a number of campus-wide initiatives including general education reform, faculty compensation, and civic engagement.

As Liberal as Liberal gets!!! I think they mention gay marriage in this book about 100 times!!! They also make Obama seem like the greatest president in our history!!! To me, way too much opinion and not enough facts. Only got it because it was required reading in my government class. Would rather have read The Complete Idiot's Guide to U.S. Government and Politics!!!

Great intro to past and current politics

I used this for my political science class, and I loved it. I had little experience in politics, and this proved to be an interesting read. The beyond our borders parts linked the US to the world and was a great supplement to each chapter. Pricey, but I guess it needs to be, as you can tell there was a lot of current research going on for each new edition.

Just when I received the book you can tell it has had wear and tear so hopefully there not charging me for it! There was the spine a little ripped and the back had a rip, as well. But overall FREAKING BETTER THAN PAYING SO MUCH MONEY TO BUY THIS BOOK!

What a Great Guy!

I don't expect to read a celebrity autobiography and come out hating the guy, but what struck me about this book is how Bear Grylls seems to be a regular guy, not in the sense that we could all join the SAS and climb Everest, but in his utter devotion to his family and his faith, coupled with a drive to live a good life as a husband, father and adventurer. It almost seems as though he was born a couple hundred years too late, given his British colonial sense of exploration (but not exploitation).

This book is fast-paced and well-written, with short chapters that keep reeling you in through his story. When I downloaded it last night, I couldn't put it down. Bear is a good example of what can be accomplished with hard work and focus. He doesn't try to gloss over his shortcomings, he seems to embrace them as a springboard to make himself a better man. I could never accomplish what he has from a physical standpoint, but this book does a great job of transmitting this sense of wonder and adventure to the reader. In the end, it's almost as if you have shared his adventures. It is a terrific book.

A truly inspiring read, not just for adults but the young as well!

Most of us know him as the ex-special forces guy who is highly skilled, tough, strong, definitely crazy (after all he did drink his own piss on TV) and the presenter of one of the world's highest rated reality shows but I've always been curious about the "real" Bear Grylls and his journey right up to this point, because just watching him on TV tells me it's an interesting one, and boy is it! Packed with adventures, many near-death experiences and what I consider miracles as well, what will strike you about this book is that it is also packed with a whole lot of heart and soul as Grylls tells of his struggles through life and how he overcame countless obstacles through faith, perseverance and sheer will. From his training in special forces, to how he broke his back in 3 places during a parachuting accident only to climb Mt Everest 18 months later, this book will make you cry and laugh (out loud) all at the same time. It's a real easy read so young adults can enjoy it too, speaking of which I'm really glad my 15 year old just borrowed the book off me because I know that his story will inspire her to live life to the max, like an adventure that it is, and be anchored by faith not fear in every situation (and much much more which I'm too lazy to elaborate, so just read it!) because it surely has inspired me. I also can't think of a cooler role model for the youth of today than this guy. Can you?

Full of Warmth, Personality, and Inspiration

While I have not been a big fan of Bear Grylls' tv shows(for mostly superficial reasons), his name is so big in survival and outdoor education circles that I figured that I owed it to myself to check out this autobiography.

I am so glad that I did!

From the very beginning, the storytelling drew me in. The portrayal of the lives and often heroic actions of his ancestors warmed my heart in a way that few authors manage. Even better than the storytelling was Bear's insight into the attitudes and principles of these people and the explanations of how this history and these stories affected him and helped to shape him into the person that he is now.

The book continues with numerous personal stories of adventure in it's many forms.

This book and it's stories contain fantastic life lessons about:
-Courage
-Honor
-Perseverance
-Dealing with difficulty and fear
-Patience
-Learning from difficulty and mistakes
-Hope
-Self-respect
-Knowing your limitations
-Pushing yourself to your limits
-Love
-Value of family

This book was written in the first person and has a very conversational and warm style. When the author reveals personal information about his thoughts, fears, etc during a particular story, it feels like he is letting you in on a little secret. It was obvious that the book was professionally edited. Unfortunately, the kindle formatting left a little to be desired. The TOC is properly linked, but you cannot access the TOC direct from the "Go To..." menu. This would be inexcusable in a reference book, but for this autobiography, I doubt many people will be trying to repeatedly reference the TOC.

I absolutely recommend this book for:
- Anyone who enjoys a well-told story
- Anyone who enjoys adventure and the outdoors
- A young person who wants to learn
- Anyone who wants insight into the personality and person of Bear Grylls - Stalkers ;-)

The Standard of Care for Dental Office Medical Emergencies

This is the definitive textbook on medical emergencies in the dental office.

Dentists do not get a comprehensive medical education simply because there is no time for such a detailed education in the 4+ years of dental school. This book fills in the gap for the dental practitioner. The book is organized in such a fashion so that the dental staff learns to recognize a dental emergency early, and then according to specific algorithms, the appropriate treatment is rendered (until emergency staff arrives). Keeping the patient alive until emergency care arrives is the primary duty of the dental staff. Too many dentists buy an emergency kit full of emergency drugs (that they don't perhaps know how to use properly), yet somehow feel they are covered from liability. Having an emergency kit and not knowing how to use it actually creates more liability for the dental office.

This is a book that every dental professional should examine page by page from cover to cover until a firm understanding of recognizing medical emergencies is ingrained. I bought this copy so that I could review it each year, as one loses knowledge that is not used. Since medical emergencies (thankfully) do not happen each week or month, knowledge of medical emergency treatment slowly slips away like a leaky sieve. It has to be bolstered regularly, and fortunately, this is the book that the dental professional can rely upon to recognize dental/medical emergencies, and then render appropriate treatment. Once mastered, this book'sinformation will give the dentist and his/her staff confidence in treating virtually all medical emergencies that could happen in the dental environment. Dr. Stanley Malamed is the authority in this field, and his book is an absolute essential for every dental office. Better to have this book than a kit full of emergency medications!

This book is a really good review and reference to keep on hand. It also has full color flow charts and the new CPR guidelines indexed at the back. Great resource to have in any office, especially those that treat elderly patients, or provide IV sedation.
