Exceptional!

(Planeta.com Journal) - One of the best books of the past year, this work combines the details of a scientific field guide with anthropological research. The result is outstanding.
Author Victoria Schlesinger tells the story about the animals and plants most commonly seen in Mundo Maya -- Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. The book provides a synthesis of current research and will delight specialists and travelers alike. Chapters focus on Pine-Oak, Cloud and Tropical Forests, Savannas, Mangroves and Coral Reefs.
The book is well illustrated with line drawings by Juan C. Chab-Medina. This is a beautiful book which would make an excellent holiday gift. I'm trying to think of a book that has piqued my interest as much as Animals and Plants of the Ancient Maya, and I'd have to put this a category with Lane Simonian's Defending the Land of the Jaguar. Excellent!

Mayan Natural World Revealed

This is an excellent guide for anyone interested in the Mayan world, both past and present. It is also a useful travel companion to take on a trip to Central America. The illustrations are excellent, and Ms Schlesinger writes ina clear, uncluttered style that is a real pleasure to read. A magical book about a people who saw the world through other eyes than our own.

A stunningly imaginative guide to the past

This is one of those incredibly rare guidebooks that pushes past the confines of the genre and brings something totally fresh to the endeavor. I am not a Maya scholar, but Schlesinger's writing is so evocative that I couldn't help but be totally pulled in by her descriptions of the plants and animals that inhabited the Maya world.

Good classroom compendium

Alhough the topic of U.S. political leadership and masculinity appears in various sources, this is the one book I like to use in my "Gender and Political Communication" course (besides my own book) that summarizes much of the topic of the gendered presidency. It will happen one day. Just give it time!

This book was published before the 2008 election. It speaks about the challenges and victories that shape whether the US will have a female president. I liked its evaluations and diverse chapter topics.
In women's studies classes, they emphasize that gender and sex are different concepts. The authors in this book try to spell out that both being women and the status of the presidency seen as a masculine job hurts women's chances. The book says sexism would have to decrease in this country, but also that citizens would have to be more comfortable of women in "masculine" jobs for there to be a female president. Many news articles have said it's not a question of if, but when the US gets a female president, and this book does not veer from that point.
To me, the latter chapters were easier to read than the former ones. After a while, this book became of Who's Who of Women in the Legislature and Executive branches. A poli. sci. major could get a quick brush-up on women in politics here.
The work speaks of Geena Davis' show and how art could open the door to life. None of the researchers are psychics, but some of them do hint, "There's some guy named Obama who seems to be in the wings." This book pays a lot of attention to Hillary Clinton as it should. Still, the authors could not have predicted that she'd become Secretary of State and get some background in this "masculine" job.
I have two critiques of the emphasized women here. The book sometimes hints, "If not Hillary, then Condi Rice." It does admit that Condi never said she would run for the job. However, I am incredibly skeptical that Black conservatives who get appointed to positions can get elected to them. I'm not convinced that Far Right voters would embrace her; I'm an African American and I'd really say I can't imagine my community leaving its favored party and voting for Condi. Lord knows I wouldn't have. Chald, Claire Huxtable could get elected President before Condi Rice could. This work used Louisiana's Governor Blanco as an example of sexism against female leaders. It suggests Rudolph Giuliani was praised around 911 when she was condemned around Katrina. Sorry, but I heard both women and men, in Louisiana and outside of it, say Blanco did a poor job in that crisis. Painting her as a victim was not plausible to me.
This book becomes more dated each day, but I thought it was a strong text.

Timely and Well-Written

What a great anthology. This book brings together some of the great minds of legislative, presidential, media, and gender studies within Political Science. My favourite piece by far was Georgia Duerst-Lahti's. She is witty and intelligent and this comes across in her detailed analysis about the newscoverage of the candidates and the prefernece for masculinity or more masculine terms.

Kim Fridkin's essay on the media is also illuminating. I've looked at my copy of the book and it's dog eared in each chapter. There is something for everyone. The chapter about executive leadership is also useful with the historical breakdown of women leaders.

Overall a great read. The book could be read by a lay audience or an academic audience. I'll definitely use some sections in my summer course (American Politics) and other courses.

This book is a real gem.

I stumbled on it recently when I was at the Samuel French bookstore on Sunset Blvd. In the heart of Hell-A (oops, scratch that - L.A. has no heart!) Anyway, there are tons of screenwriting books in that store. Tons. But I happened to pick this one up and start reading the Introduction. Very insightful. So I bought it (should've bought it here, though - it's cheaper), and I ended up devouring it pretty damn quickly. The writing is terrific - very conversational, accessible, smart, and at times bust-a-gut funny. But most impressive, the author sheds light on the importance of "connection" in the storytelling process. It made me think back about how many times in writing classes CONFLICT CONFLICT CONFLICT had been shoved down my throat. Okay, okay, I got it already! But, she points out, it's only half the story (the yin to the yang, or ya know, vice-versa...) - as she goes on to wonderfully illustrate and illuminate. Also, the sample student scripts are great additions. I especially got a big laugh out of "The Making of 'Killer Kite.'" I may have to spring for the companion video just to see how that film turned out.
Yeah, yeah, the book has "short screenplays" in the title, but the points she makes are applicable to scripts of any length. You can bet that even this jaded L.A. feature film writer will be incorporating a lot of her insights in his own creative process.
I'm looking forward to any follow-ups from this author, because she's finally brought something new - and important -- to the endless discussions (and how-to books) on screenwriting.

Crafting Short Screenplays that Connect

What I liked most about this book was its conversational style. Very down-to-earth, but it maintains a sense of professionalism as well. Claudia really knows what she's talking about - not only book knowledge, but also life experience. Of course, that isn't all there is to like about this book. Her insights are well-thought-out and well-defined. It's good to see something in the genre that doesn't focus on Conflict as the sole driving force in the narrative form. And, finally, on a practical level, I believe the book is well-ordered and well put together. And the length of the chapters is inviting, rather than daunting. You can read a chapter easily in one sitting; because so much of the learning process is not *reading*, but *doing*, I feel that the brief chapters allow much more time to get to the 'doing' portion of learning, the really meaningful stuff. In short, I wish all text-books were this accessible and enjoyable.

What a Great Screenwriting Coach!

This wonderful little book is for you, the student of screenwriting. How do I know? I had the good fortune of being in Dr. Claudia Hunter Johnson's screenwriting class at Florida State University. We used the methods described in her book and they work! If you are disciplined enough to follow her process, you will amaze yourself. You will begin with Le Menu (your very own personal autobiography) and finish with a well-crafted script. Although you will not have her direct feedback, you will have the benefit of a script coach who has helped launch a thousand careers. Tom.

Received this book as part of a prize from garden store contest. The amount of information is decent, whats more important is the quality and accuracy. This book has both, and can change the way you grow, if you let it. I did and I am not disappointed. This book covers all relevant aspects of indoor gardening. When I picked it up and started reading I was in the top of the 85%, now after reading and putting into practice what I read. I am confident that i am in the top 15%. I have many years of virtually trouble free gardening ahead of me thanks to this book. A steal at any price below 20 bucks

About the Author

Mary Jo Hatch (PhD Stanford, 1985) is the C. Coleman McGehee Eminent Scholars Research Professor of Banking and Commerce, Emerita, at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Visiting Professor Gothenburg University, and an International Research Fellow of the Centre for Corporate Reputation, Oxford University. Her research has been published in Harvard Business Review, California Management Review, Academy of Management Review, European Journal of Marketing, Human Relations, Journal of Management Inquiry, Strategic Organization, Administrative Science Quartely, and Organization. She co-authored The Three Faces of Leadership (Blackwell) with M. Kostera and A. Kozminski. She received the 2011 Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Management's Organization and Management Theory (OMT) Division.
Ann L. Cunliffe is currently Professor of Organization Studies at the University of Leeds in the UK. She has held positions at the University of New Mexico, California State University and the University of New Hampshire. She obtained her Master of Philosophy degree and Ph.D. from Lancaster University Management School. Recent publications in the field of leadership, sensemaking, reflexivity, and qualitative research methods are found in Human Relations, Organizational Research Methods and Management Learning. She was awarded the 2002 'Breaking the Frame Award' from the Journal ofManagement Inquiry for the article that best exemplifies a challenge to existing thought. Ann is currently co Editor-in-Chief of Management Learning, Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, and a member of eight international journal Editorial Boards.

Dense read but organized well

This is a really, really dense read. It takes a lot of concentration and thought to read through the chapters, but I think it's organized well, provides great information and is broken into great chapters with key terms.

Clear explanations of organization theory

This was required reading in a graduate level course in strategic communication. I had absolutely no knowledge of organization theory before I took the course, but I found this book easy to understand. It gives a basic overview of different theories of how organizations are structured. As an introduction to organization theory, this book is recommended.

I had read the second edition of this book and I think there was a great evolution for the third edition.

Jennifer Abrams is an international educational and communications consultant for public and private schools, hospitals, universities and non-profits. She trains and coaches teachers, administrators, nurses, hospital personnel and others on successful instructional practices, new employee support, supervision and evaluation, generational savvy, having hard conversations and effective collaboration skills.

In Palo Alto USD (Palo Alto, CA), Abrams led professional development sessions and provided new teacher and supervisor trainings at both the elementary and secondary level. From 2000-2011, she was lead coach for the Palo Alto-Mountain View-Los Altos-Saratoga-Los Gatos Consortium’s Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program.

In her educational consulting work, she has presented at annual conferences such as Learning Forward, ASCD, NASSP, and the New Teacher Center Annual Symposium, as well as at the Teachers’ and Principals’ Centers for International School Leadership. Her communications consulting in the health care sector includes training and coaching work at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and Stanford Hospitals.

Her publications include Having Hard Conversations, published by Corwin Press in 2009, the chapter “Habits of Mind for the School Savvy Leader” in Art Costa’s and Bena Kallick’s book Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind: 16 Essential Characteristics for Success, and contributions to the book Mentors in the Making: Developing New Leaders for New Teachers published by Teachers College Press. Her most recent book with co-author Valerie Von Frank, Generational Savvy: How to be Effective with Educators of All Generations, was published by Corwin Press in 2013.

She considers herself a “voice coach,” helping others learn how to best use their voices, be it in a group, in front of a classroom, coaching a colleague, in a supervisory role and most recently in writing for the stage, as she does as a Board Member of the National New Play Network. Abrams holds a Master’s degree in Education from Stanford University and a Bachelor’s degree in English from Tufts University.

Valerie von Frank has written extensively about education over several decades as a daily newspaper reporter in multiple states covering public schools and, over the last decade, for NSDC publications, including JSD, Tools for Schools, The Learning System, The Learning Principal, and T3. Key Resource for Education Leaders

Abrams and von Frank do an excellent job of describing the research on generational differences while at the same time pointing out that this is just one of many lenses through which we can examine ourselves and others. Written for educators, it applies their findings to key topics such as collaboration teacher induction, succession planning, human resource policies, and what needs to be addressed in common etiquette. With great exercises and resources for readers to use with colleagues and teams, this book is a significant addition to tools for creating environments of cooperation and success for all.

About the Author

James C. Gerdeen, Ph.D., P.E., is a professor emeritus at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Science Center and a distinguished professor at Michigan Technological University. He has published over 65 papers and over 100 research reports. His research interests include pressure vessel design, structural analysis, metal working manufacturing, and mechanical design.

Ronald A.L. Rorrer, Ph.D., P.E., is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center. He has published over 30 papers and holds one patent. His research areas include tribology, polymers, composites, and bioengineering.
