Restoration Comedy in Performance is liberally illustrated with contemporary drawings and modern photographs, and it draws extensively upon documentary and visual evidence of the seventeenth century in order to suggest the importance of the costume and customs, manners and behaviour of the age to an understanding of the sort of theatre and drama it produced. Professor Styan also discusses the problems encountered in the early attempts to revive the comedies in the twentieth century, and pauses frequently in order to offer a descriptive account of a moment of staging or to recreate a scene or a sequence of comic repartee or action. The book aims to bring back to life, therefore, something of a lost art form, not as a piece of conventional stage or production history, but as a true attempt to recognize the virtues of Restoration comedy as a performing art.

Until recently, critics have dismissed Restoration comedy as superficial, predictable, even obscenea degenerate heir to Elizabethan drama, a crude ancestor of the modern "well-made play." Styan finds this criticism based on the assumption that plays should read as literature. He insists that Restoration comedy is above all theater and therefore concentrates on its physical and social aspects: staging, costumes, and manners. By featuring these important elements of Restoration life, Stynan says, dramatists were able to achieve an interplay between drama and reality. Styan illustrates his material with quotes from plays, courtesy books, poetry, etc., making this work a lively, readable introduction to the era as well as the plays. Wonderful production histories and excellent photographs of modern renderings of restoration comedies. Valuable to the Theatre historian and actor. As well greatly helpful to directors & teachers of acting style, movement, clothes & behavior. Very perceptive analysis of the language of the fan, use of snuff and bowing & curtseying.

For a certain audience

Asterisk was a lonely man writing for an outlet, rather then to a friend and so the stories are often complete. Though, I would love to read the letters his friend wrote back to him to get the full conversation. I think the enjoyment of his letters increases if the reader has had personal experience in the Islands of Vanuatu. WIthout a personal context the book would drag on, as he spends time complaining about everything in turns. The thing i adore about Asterisk, is that he seems to hate everything equally one day and love it the next. His disillusionment to find the New Hebrides a much rougher and more complex place then one he had imagined based on his reading and outright obsession with Robert Lewis Stevenson's accounts makes his own tale that much more intriguing. The reader becomes drawn into the story as they watch Asterisk struggle between what he thinks something should be, and what the reality of that thing is. Asterisk possesses the ingrained prejudice of an Englishmen for the time, place and social status and yet he sometimes recognizes that and tries to apologize or over come it within his letters. He writes with good detail and clean language without getting mired in adjectives. Though sometimes very offhand about gruesome events, he addresses realities of life on the plantations without romance. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Non-Fiction, Historical Travel Logs or is interested in learning about the colonial history of Vanuatu.

Isles of Illusion

This is a major work regarding ethnography, sociology and philosophy in general as well as a very fine piece of literature from Robert James Fletcher, who unfortunately was never to produce better than this. Already owning other editions of this book, I wanted to have a look at this paperback one. Well, I guess it is all right for a new reader despite the fact that the author real identity, well known in 1986, could have been put on the cover instead of the initial pseudonym. Save Gavin Young introduction for better times and begin the book with the author's friend Bohun Lynch foreword. Bon voyage!

The poor brute’s life would be one long martyrdom

I first heard about this book while reading Slow Boats Home by Gavin Young. A contact in a Hong Kong shipping office had loaned Young a beaten up copy of this long out of print classic. And Young carried it with him as he travelled by freighter across the South Pacific. The quotes and references he shared were so intriguing that I was determined to track it down for myself. Thankfully it was reissued, and resurrected from the shadowy world of forgotten stories.

“Asterisk”, as the author was known, was a dissatisfied British schoolteacher who had read the letters that Robert Louis Stevenson published from Samoa. And in 1910, at the age of 33, he set off to find his own South Pacific dreams.

Asterisk hoped to make his fortune working on a plantation, but the brutal life that he found quickly disillusioned him. This book — edited and compiled from letters he wrote to his friend Bohun Lynch, and published by that friend without his knowledge – are a masterpiece of directness and honesty.

Asterisk chronicles the hardships of his life and his descent into 7 years of misery with cutting wit and scathing honesty. He wrote about another side of a place that many dreamed of as an enchanted tropical paradise, and he captured a vivid snapshot of a vanished age.

But don’t expect a depressing book. His observations are often hilarious in their inventiveness and language. Take this, for example:

“That very night I caught and slew over 30 fleas inside and outside my trousers. I didn’t try and count the host that escaped me. No, if one is going to be a rough traveler, it doesn’t do to be finicking. […] It is simply impossible to keep free of them. That’s why I don’t keep a dog. The poor brute’s life would be one long martyrdom.”

Yes, the is thoroughly a book of its time, and Asterisk’s racist comments about the natives can be off-putting to modern audiences. On the other hand, he also showed great compassion for the islanders he lived among. He doctored them when they were ill, and hated white planters or traders who maltreated or cheated them.

This is a gritty, honest book that’s extremely difficult to forget. A true travel classic.

Annie Brock is a former high school English teacher and middle and high school library media specialist. She currently works as a freelance writer and educational technology consultant. Annie has a degree in journalism from Kansas State University, and earned her secondary English education credentials from Washburn University. Heather Hundley is an elementary educator with 12 years of teaching experience. She currently serves as a kindergarten teacher in Kansas. I like how this book is organized monthly

The Growth Mindset concept is really taking off in education. I like how this book is organized monthly, with very approachable chunks. So many educational texts are completely overwhelming. I would like to see an online component that had editable versions of some of the paperwork they describe. I have found it to be time consuming to create or find these documents and the book is too small to just scan and print. I'm very excited to see how my year goes using this book, and if I get the results I hope for I will definitely be using it again.

Good First Biochem Book

This is the first time I have taken any Biochem course, and the book has been great. It has a "waiting room" at the beginning of every chapter with people presenting with different symptoms related to the chapter, then the chapter itself is quite dense, but it gives you little clinical tid-bits along the way. The end of each chapter explains the outcome and/or treatment for each patient. It really helps the information stick. I am using this for Biochem as a prereq for PA school, and recommend it for anyone applying to a graduate health science program. After using this book, I really understand the biochemistry of the body, and the balance of body fluid chemistry is something I am very comfortable with. If you are someone who struggled with Organic Chemistry but loved physiology, this book is for you.

Innovative approach to biochemistry for medical students.

The first lecturer in my freshman biochem class was a Nobel Prize winner. I had difficulty staying awake. It can be a boring subject. Practically all the sections were taught by PhDs, intelligent men to be sure, but there was hardly any clinical correlation. We had to wait until junior year for that. Lieberman and Marks were not the first to use a clinical approach, but they are among the best when it comes to presenting a complex subject in meaningful steps. The sections and chapters are well organized. At the end of each chapter are Key Comments, Clinical Comments and Biochemical Comments. The review questions have a clinical slant. I have not read many other current biochemistry books designed for medical students, but I think this is an excellent one.

If you are planning on going into the medical field and need biochemistry this book is perfect for that It teaches you biochemistry but has real medical examples in the text to demonstrate the concepts. It is also really organized and easy to find stuff.

This was average by author dumas standards. He is known to have an assistant write in some of his novels. It seems to be apparent to me whenever there is a deviation into the historical context of the story, which is necessary but is written in a completely different boring matter of fact style. Still a great story as wtih all his novels. Probably four stars when compared to other novels but I hold dumas to higher standards because he is the best storyteller of all time.

Easy to Make Stained Glass Lampshades

THis book is excellent for people who are already experienced in working with stained glass. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The designs are lovely. There are templates that you can use that are full sized patterns. There are recommendations for color combinations. All in all a fine book for people with experience and the desire to create Tiffany like lamps. successfully. gloriaber@aol.com

Good Quality Images

This book reflects the quality of all of Mr. Sibbett's publications. I use the images in computer applications and the quality of his images are far superior to other books I have bought. I like the range of complexity one book will contain. My finished lamps are only a few inches in size, his designs translate well to this new application of his designs.

I wish I had known that this was a book only of diagrams. No dimensions or resizing of the patterns. Not helpful to me.
