Straightforward, Highly Useful

This is a book for UX designer/developers who need straight talk and solid visual examples of Android UI best practices. Unlike another reviewer, I did *not* expect this book to contain code samples; in fact, I would have been annoyed if it had as there are plenty of resources that discuss Android development. What I needed, and what this book delivered beautifully, were real world UI solutions that could be immediately applied to improve my application designs.

The discussions and examples provided are particularly useful if you are a designer/developer who also works on iOS apps. Starting from necessary changes to the launch icon, the book moves step-by-step through the various elements and interactions. making comparisons between major mobile operating systems along the way.

I gave the book five stars because it delivered precisely what I wanted: State the pattern name; tell me how it works; show me examples; tell me when, where and why to use it; and warn me when I need to be careful. It isn't filled with buzzwords, business-speak or theoretical discussions -- which I found quite refreshing for a change.

Note: In the spirit of full disclosure, I did attend the author's rapid prototyping seminar during SXSW 2013. However, I have attended hundreds of industry presentations over the years and have never felt the need to give sterling book reviews to every single author.

Accessible, entertaining read for all

I received the book when I took a two-day work shop with the author. I enjoyed the workshop and materials so much I ultimately signed on to work more with the company.

Perhaps some of you will find this review helpful. I will point out a few things that might be hard to notice from the Amazon preview:

COLOR. I read the Kindle version which is in color. I found the color helpful especially when he referred to some examples like Southwest Airlines that used color for groupings. The book version is not in color.

MANUAL. It can be read cover to cover but it also functions like a reference manual with repeating sections for every pattern like when to use, cautions, tablet considerations and visual examples. I found the consistency helpful especially with unfamiliar patterns.

CRITICAL. It's not just a manual. The author has a point of view. I found it helpful that the book wasn't toting the company line. The author was honest when he thought the Android standards were wrong. He gave clear reasons when and where to depart from the Google rule book. I felt like I could trust the feedback.

HUMOR. There are parts that are laugh out loud funny. My favorite is the Sit orSquat sections around EULAs. The author has a quirky sense of humor and an eclectic set of citations. He will undoubtedly make one or two references you will be compelled to Google.

EXAMPLES. The book starts with a breakdown of an app. You get right into it which is gratifying. I find this approach immediately engaging and helpful. You get your money's worth of insights in the first few pages.

What could be better

FINALS. The author makes the point several times that you don't have to be an artist. I think that's fine for the sticky pad examples (rather good actually) but not for the screenshots of the 'improved' comps. I feel like some of the after images could have used a visual artist to really shine.

DATED. Some of the iOS references already feel dated with the iOS7 release recently announced. You really can't get around this problem in books, but it might be nice to state once in while what version of iOS he's referring to. Apple is a design monolith but a changing one.

DEFINITION. Define anti-pattern sooner. I tweeted the author because I felt that the antipattern term was used before it was ever defined. While the definition may seem obvious I appreciate how quickly he responded and what he said, An antipattern is "basically something that a lot of people do but is generally a bad idea. "

I am about a third of the way through the book so this is by no means an exhaustive list. I think the last point is key. The author invites reader into community, is accessible and gives a bunch of stuff on his website like articles and code.

If you are a UX designer, developer, product manager or visual designer, get this book and develop a common vocabulary you can use to communicate with your peers. Get more, done faster and look smarter too.

Great author, great book, great content

I just got out of an 8 hour course called Android Design Patterns: Interaction Design Solutions for Developers at SXSW Interactive. Greg covered a huge swath of mobile patterns and anti-patterns using content that he noted was also in the book. It was clear that the class could not cover everything that is covered in the book. And while it is called Android Design Patterns, Greg provides many examples from iOS and notes which is a better pattern, and when to borrow from examples that originated in one or the other to improve your designs in either system. Greg was a tireless and committed instructor and I'm sure I'll be as impressed with his book as I was with his seminar, which was worth the $800 price of the entire conference.

The greatest historical fiction saga ever written

My excitement at seeing this compilation of Bernard Cornwell's brilliant Warlord Chronicles made available on Kindle cannot be overstated. I am a die-hard fan of Mr. Cornwell's work and have read nearly every book published during his prolific career. I already own well-thumbed hardcover copies of The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur but immediately jumped at the chance to enjoy these books once again with the convenience of Kindle.

The books themselves are simply masterpieces of setting, plotting and character development. The archetypes that Mr. Cornwell uses in many of his other books were obviously inspired by the characters in this trilogy. Derfel, Merlin, Sansum, Nimue, Arthur, Guinevere, Culwch, Lancelot, and more...I can vividly recall the details of each of them like they were old friends. What happens to them takes on personal resonance because they are so well-developed.

A particular strength of Mr. Cornwell's writing is immersing the reader in a highly accurate and detailed world of the past. It seems almost unnecessary to describe how well the battles and fighting scenes are written because those are what Mr. Cornwell does best. The contrast between the glory of the works of the Roman Empire and the squalor of Dark Ages Britain is starkly illustrated, similarly with pagan Druidic traditions and early Christian rites. This is an in-depth examination of society, religion, politics, war, and economy as they might have been during Arthur's time.

Many of the plot developments remain shocking even for the experienced Cornwell reader. Kingdoms rise and fall, political machinations abound, and all the while the force of nature that is the Saxon invasion lurks in the background and gradually comes to the fore. No one feels safe, with no sense of plot armor for the main characters just because they are main characters. Terrible things can and will happen to them.

If you haven't already read the Warlord Chronicles then this is a great opportunity to get them all for a ridiculously reasonable price. I am jealous of anyone who has the privilege of reading the books for the first time. I suspect that most Cornwell devotees who own Kindles will have already taken the plunge and are happily re-immersing themselves in the world of Brittania.

Note on the Kindle edition: the font seems to be one size larger than what most Kindle books use as default. This is a very minor quibble. Thankfully, the map of Britain has made a smooth transition into the electronic form. The clear definition of the inking was preserved; none of the blurriness on Kindle pictures that can cause eye-aches here. Other publishers please take note!

Great books

Good books. This is one of the reasons I bought a kindle. I read these books a while ago, and have tried to get them in kindle-format for a while, and an very happy that they are now available. It is all three books of the "Warlord" series in one sitting, so be ready to lose some sleep... Arthurian legend without any frills. At a little over five dollars for three books, you can't go wrong with this purchase, and I do believe that this is what kindle-readers are looking for. If you liked the Saxon stories, you'll love this book.

I have only given one 5 star in my historical fiction reviews (count of monte cristo) . I thought long and hard about this review and could give it no other than a 5. It is everything a historical fiction should be. It is everything an epic should be. This is one book that really is what the other reviews say it is. 25 thousand glorious words of pure fun.

You don't have to be a child to enjoy this book!

Alabaster's Song is a story that you should own, even if you don't have a child. It is warm and sweet, and brings you back to the place where the child inside each one of us still lives.
As always, Max Lucado has the gift of reaching down into the depths of your heart and soul, and touching you, drawing you closer to God.
Make this book part of your library, part of your Christmas traditions. I read it each year to my "babies", who are now 19, 17, and 13. It is a tradition I will carry on with my grandchildren.

Wonderful story for Christmastime or anytime

This is a fabulous book that brings to mind the wonder of Christmas through a child's eyes. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is timeless and unforgettable! I read this story to my children, ages 11, 8, and 4, each year around Christmas. I even read it to my MOPS group as a Christmas reading last year. Thank you, Max Lucado, for another wonderful children's book!

Angels & Christmas--an unbeatable combination!

Very cute story about a little boy whose Christmas Tree angel comes to life to sing sweet songs to him. Gorgeous artwork brings the story to life with brilliance. I loved that the story repeated itself once the little boy grew up and had a son of his own who hears the angels music.

Odd Style, but Deeper Meanings

...The occasionally brilliant wording and the solid characterization make Avey Johnson an engaging protagonist. Her journey from a confused, troubled widow on an expensive cruise to a liberated woman with deeper understanding of her cultural and familial heritage make this book worth reading. This journey is interspersed with recollections of her relationship with her dead husband. This allows the reader to empathize deeply with her plight.
On a Caribbean cruise, Avey Johnson begins to have symptoms of both mental and physical illness. Driven by needs she doesn't understand, she leaves the cruise and finds herself adrift in a tide of Patois-speaking islanders, who are all intent on a cultural pilgrimage to a neighboring island. Her meeting with an island patriarch draws her into the pilgrimage as well. There, she learns that this is the culture she abandoned at the same time she abandoned her working-class roots.
The flashbacks to her life with her husband Jay not only chronicle her life preceding the cruise but also give a greater understanding of Avey as she throws herself headlong into a mysterious journey of self-discovery. The greater familiarity with the character is one of the book's strongest points.
The reason the book only rates four stars is that its symbolism makes it inaccessible when simply read for pleasure. This is not an offense worthy of a whole star, so my actual rating is four and a half stars, or 90%.
The symbolism sprinkled throughout the book does provide constant rewards, though- like Shakespeare, you can never finish gaining new insight through re-reading.
I feel confident in recommending this book to anyone who enjoys character-driven fiction. The symbolism was made apparent to me, as I read the book as part of a writing course. With that in mind, use only as directed.

The Burden of Survival

The Harlem Renaissance poet Countee Cullen speaks of a creature of leisure in his short poem, "For a Lady I Know"--the type of person who expects those of an African-American heritage to handle matters of work even unto death. Jerome Johnson, the husband of the staid protagonist of Paule Marshall's _Praisesong for the Widow,_ Avey Johnson, lives the reality of Cullen's words. The industrious Jerome labors beneath an Irish supervisor who allows Jerome to do all the work in the department store they both work in, while the supervisor takes the credit. Jerome expresses his dismay about this in an argument he has with Avey one evening, in which she accuses him of cheating on her in the long hours he spends away from the home. He cries: "Okay, you go take my job at the store then! Go on. Go on down there and see how you like working for some red-faced Irishman who sits on his can all day laughing to himself at the colored boy he's got doing everything" (105)
When Jerome is young, newly married to Avey and living on Halsey Street, he is aware of the pressures of race working at the department store in the shipping room. Not only does he organize the store's floor so that it is efficiently run during its opened hours, he also stays after work late, slaving in the storeroom to ensure that the store will be smoothly operating during the next day. Jerome's supervisor realizes that Jerome runs shipping and receiving, although "[Jerome has] to be careful not to make it appear so" (92). This truth is known throughout the store, even to the salesgirls who secretly admire Jerome's work ethic and charm. The pretenses of the supervisor's work are just a formality, something that is probably meant to soothe the supervisor's ego and to keep Jerome's job in the Caucasian-dominated store safe.
In working as endlessly as he does, allowing another person to take the credit, Jerome is succumbing to the sway of oppression. He is aware of the sacrifices he is making and how they strip pieces of his dignity away from him, even if he does not outwardly acknowledge it often. When he does speak of it, it is in the privacy of his apartment, and only to his wife. He downplays the seriousness of what he is allowing to happen to him in order to survive in a business that favors light-skinned people. He says to Avey, trying to laugh it off: "Two jobs for the salary of one. They really got themselves a good thing in me" (92).
Jerome's attempt to find levity in the bad business practices of his supervisor seems to be his way of coping with what would otherwise fill him with anger and despair. Hints of the passion and rage burning beneath his civilized façade emerge during his lovemaking with Avey, a time when he is able to surrender from the pressures of race that are a force during his working hours and also, when he returns home. During these stolen times with Avey, Jerome alternates between an almost blind need to possess her and a desire to cleanse himself of the sins of the day. During one interlude, he cries to her, like a man stripped of his dignity and bared to the marrow: "Take it from me, Avey! Just take it from me" (129). Marshall likens the emotion of the moment to, "a burden he wanted rid of. Like a leg-iron which slowed him in the course he had set for himself" (129).
The impassioned Jerome speaks beneath the surface of their sexual liaisons and perhaps hints at the shame he feels at having to present himself a certain way for the benefit of his Caucasian coworkers. Jerome neatly grooms his mustache with oil and carefully presses his clothes, trying to affect an air of appeal and trust amongst his coworkers. He secretly takes pride in the fact that they do not regard him the way they do most African-Americans. Many African-Americans refer to this readiness to appease Caucasians as "the Uncle Tom syndrome," which relates to the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's _Uncle Tom's Cabin_, first published on March 20, 1852. Certainly Jerome "Jay" Johnson does not do these things for any other reason but survival. Instinctually, he realizes that he must play a certain game to move further at the store.
Later in Marshall's novel, after Jerome has scaled the proverbial ladder of success, he becomes disparaging of the African-Americans who are not as successful as he is. On one of his tirades to Avey, he shouts:
The trouble with half these Negroes out here is that they spend all their time blaming the white man for everything. He won't give `em a job. Won't let `em in his schools. Won't let `em in his neighborhood. Just won't give `em a break. He's the one keeping `em down. When the problem really is most of `em don't want to hear the word `work.' If they'd just cut out all the good-timing and get down to some hard work, put their minds to something, they'd get somewhere (135).
Avey gently reminds him that he was turned away from jobs because of his colour and also overworked so another could take his credit; Jerome is not moved, showing that the strain of the past has taken quite a toll on him. Clearly, he has changed from the young, ambitious man he used to be. Where he once eagerly returned home from work to dance to his favorite records by "Coleman Hawkins, the Count, Lester Young (old Prez himself), The Duke--along with the singers he loved: Mr. B., Lady Day, Lil Green, Ella" (94), he now returns home sans his mustache, proud of his accomplishments in a world that had once denied him. Jerome fails to realize that in discovering success in the Caucasian world by pretending to be something other than himself, he has left a piece of himself behind. The burden of colour is now the mask he wears, a mask that has become his face until even Avey mourns the loss of the man he once was, compared to the man she sees before her in the final years before Jerome Johnson's death.

Must-read to understand power system dynamics!
The study of power system dynamics is challenging due to the existence of dynamics in different time-scale; for example, governor action in the scale of seconds, rotor flux phenomena in the scale of tenth of a second, stator flux phenomena in the scale of milliseconds. Mathematically speaking these are known as stiff systems. To avoid excessive simulation time or numerical instability due to the stiff nature of the model, in the power engineering community, it is customary to represent power systems by a set of differential-algebraic equations. The authors did an awesome job describing the theory to understand system dynamics and showing how to obtain a proper representation by using integral manifolds. I highly recommend this book to first year graduate degree students, engineers and scientists that have interest in the behavior of the power system.

By reading this book I have understood about what are binary options and how it works, how to weight risk versus rewards, popular indicators, and much more. It opened my eyes to the basis of binary option. It also taught me about the benefit of trading through binary option. I am very happy with the knowledge i got from this book as i have learned a new way of passive earning. With the tips i got from this book i can be able to trade effectively without the fear of losing so much money

Striking.

Literally true! You get what you want in terms of knowledge and information. The author self is is knowledgeable about Binary Options which for me is a plus and convincing, you get my point right? What their some author that talks about a certain topic but doesn't truly understand what does it men and happy to say that this book or author is not like that. Apart from the info's you get, the approach itself is striking. It has this approach that fells like a pro and I'm happy with it.

Binary trading? there's no other option than to get this book

I didn't really understand Binary Options before and I am not even interested to learn what it is. Until recently, when my friend told me about her Binary trading went out, I was curious and got interested to learn about it. I bought this book to learn what Binary trading is and I was not disappointed, because this book have all the details and info you need about Binary options and what are some tips and techniques you can use to ensure success. However, it was more clear in this book that you should plan and be quick to analyze things around.

If you are like me who were not interested about Binary Options before, but was now interested, then you have to get this book and be amazed on how Binary trading works.
