Mark Hammer Sr., Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering, is a writer of Environmental Engineering publications in the United States and Saudi Arabia. During his long tenure as a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dr. Hammer also served as the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Grant in Water Quality Control. Professor Hammer has taught at the King Fahd and King Abdulaziz Universities in Saudi Arabia where he conducted environmental engineering research in addition to his teaching responsibilities Mark J. TONS of typos - from grammatical to vital data and labels in example problems. Following such problems is extremely frustrating at times.
Lots of things are not explained before they are referred to, causing you to go to the index and find the explanation and flip back and forth. Some things are referenced and never explained at all - including data used in solutions to example problems.

This is an excellent addition to a writer's library. Clear rules with excellent, illustrative examples.
Only flaw is lack of guidance regarding curly brackets, which are not described in the punctuation chapter but are used extensively in Select Glossary and Transformational Grammar sections.

While historians and archaeologists have long affirmed that early modern builders disregarded the protection of antiquity, this study provides the first systematic analysis of preservation problems as perceived by the Renaissance popes, the civic magistrates, and ordinary citizens. Based on new evidence and recent conservation theory, this compelling study explores how civic officials balanced the defense of specific sites against the pressing demands imposed by population growth, circulation, and notions of urban decorum. Above all, the preservation of antiquity remained an indispensable tool to advance competing political agendas in the papal capital. A broad range of preservation policies and practices are examined at the half-ruined Colosseum, the intact Pantheon, and the little-known but essential Renaissance bridge known as the Ponte Santa Maria.

Rome has always incorporated change in light of its glorious past as well as in the more pragmatic context of contemporary development. Such an investigation not only reveals the complexity of preservation as a contested practice, but also challenges us to rethink the way people in the past understood history itself.

Preservation in ancient times

This book was given to me as a birthday gift. It is the story of the efforts to preserve Roman monuments during ancient times. The book is well written and reads like a novel (great for someone like me who gets easily bored by history books). The author's thorough research is evident in his clear and convincing presentation. I enjoyed this book thoroughly.

Oxford Mini Dictionary

I've sought out several pocket-sized dictionaries recently and this one seems to be the best of the bunch. With the other dictionaries, there were more missing words(and some were relatively common too).

One thing I liked about this dictionary is that the definitions are simple to understand without any fancy vocabulary; with some other dictionaries, the definition contains words that you need to look up in order to understand.

Another nice thing about this dictionary is that there is a small box under certain words(after the definition) which gives further clarification as to its usage(i.e., whether the word could be "offensive" or a common mistake with spelling, etc.).

Granted this is a pocket dictionary and will not contain all the vocabulary of a full-sized one, but it still lacked a few words that aren't too uncommon(but as I've said earlier, not as bad as the other brands).

And the binding on this dictionary feels a bit shabby. But overall this is still a solid choice among pocket/mini dictionaries and of course the "Oxford" name is renowned in the world of dictionaries.

Highly Recommended mini-OED

Sturdy and perfectly sized dictionary from the " gold standard" of dictionary publishers. Personally, I'd much rather have the 22 (or so) volume complete unabridged OED, but it's a horror to lift, plus you'd need a small trailer attached to a John Deere tractor to take it with you, thus confirming your status as the neighborhood lunatic.

Descriptions of historic and artistic sights in the Continent's capitals are cursory; Bryson prefers lesser-known locales, whose peculiar flavor he skillfully conveys in anecdotes that don't scant the seamy side and often portray eccentric characters encountered during untoward adventures of the road. He enlivens the narrative with keen, sometimes acerbic observations of national quirks like the timed light switches in French hallways, but tends to strive too hard for comic effects, some in dubious taste. He also joins other travelers in deploring the growing hordes of peddlers who overrun major tourist meccas.

Born in Iowa, Bryson (A Walk in the Clouds) backpacked through Europe as a young man. While living in England some 20 years later, he revisited many of the same places, and here he jumps back and forth between old memories and new experiences. He begins with rather negative incidents and throughout spends a great deal of time on his woes, often due to hangovers, missed opportunities with young women, and difficulties with transportation and hotel personnel. Bryson is a rather talented, opinionated writer who obviously has spent a fair amount of time walking and traveling by bus and train in Europe. Since he is given to serious profanity at times and brushes upon topics such as sex with animals and prostitutes, this is definitely not family entertainment. His descriptive ability is considerable, and his commentary, while rambling, is generally interesting. His enunciation and inflection are good, but an affected British accent creeps in at times. It's like a self-indulgent memoir of which few will care and some will be offended. Having groused his way across America in The Lost Continent (1989), Bryson (The Mother Tongue, 1990) now turns his attention to Europe. If it is any consolation to Americans, Bryson, an ex- midwesterner who has lived in England for the past 15 years, finds almost nothing to praise between the Arctic Circle and the Bosporus. Bryson's crankiness could have proved amusing--after all, Mark Twain's did in Innocents Abroad--but the humor here is meanspirited and juvenile (in Copenhagen, a hung-over Bryson notes that ``I needed coffee the way Dan Quayle needs help with an I.Q. test''), with defecation, flatulence, and eructation far too often figuring into the comic repertoire. Nor do original insights abound as Bryson retraces the steps of a journey he took two decades before, traveling from Norway to Istanbul, stopping at many of Europe's capitals (Paris, Brussels, Stockholm, Rome, etc.) along the way. He offers such comments as: ``Parisians are rude,'' ``Swedes are heavy drinkers,'' and ``the Swiss are dull and conventional.'' Consistency is not Bryson's strong suit either. While in Naples, for instance, he complains, ``I found...mean, cavernous, semipaved alleyways with...washing hung like banners between balconies that never saw sunlight.'' Yet when he reaches modern and manicured Milan, he pines, ``I wanted pandemonium and street life...washing hanging across the streets.'' Meanwhile, lines like ``let's be frank, the Italians' technological contribution to humankind stopped with the pizza oven'' are also no help. A Funny, Funny Writer

While I don't necessarily agree with Bryson's opinions about European cities (I love Paris much more than he does, and I found his comments on Berlin and Copenhagen (among other places) either wrong-headed, superficial or mean-spirited, this is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I often --often! -- laughed out loud, and sometimes I had tears of laughter streaming down my cheeks. This guy is a really, really funny writer.

My bottom line is, don't read this book for reliable insights about European cities.( It's probably relevant that he proudly doesn't speak a word of any foreign language.:How could he possibly expect to know anything about a place without being able to talk to the people who live there?)
But if you want to read a really funny writer ( At the risk of tumbling into hyperbole, I think of Mark Twain) you can buy this book. It's a load of laughs on every page. You won't be disappointed.

Buy Bryson!!

First the negative stuff:
As a linguist, I find Bill Bryson's works on language to be sadly riddled with errors. I therefore also mistrust his works on science, and have found occasional errors in his travel books.
Now for the positive stuff:
Fortunately, I first 'met' Bryson through his travel books. I have never read travel literature I have enjoyed more. Bryson is by turns hilarious, thoughtful, irritating and very good at description. But no matter what his mood at any given time, he is always entertaining. Neither Here nor There is a wonderful guide to Europe based on three trips Bryson made there: once alone after high school, once with a friend the next year, and the last many years after he had married and settled in England.
Notes from a Small Island is a guide to Great Britain written just before he and his family moved -- temporarily -- to America.
In a Sunburned Country covers a much larger country, Australia, during which Bryson is sometimes on his own, sometimes accompanied by colleagues, and sometimes with friends.
I heartily recommend his travel books, even for those who don't particularly enjoy reading travel books.

This book made me want to stay home.

After enjoying "The Road to Little Dribbling: Adventures of an American in Britain", I immediately ordered Mr.Bryson's Notes from a Small Island and Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe. I have to say that I didn't find this book nearly as interesting. While I found Mr.Bryson's observations in The Road to Little Dribbling to be wry and amusing, he just sounded cranky and dissatisfied when describing his travels through the rest of Europe...though, apparently, it seems like he had good reason to be cranky and dissatisfied. I have to admit that I gave up half-way through the book, but I intend to give it another chance. Maybe if I read about some of the places I've already visited, I'll be able to relate to it better, and find some humor in what happened to him.

A Neat Little Journal

I have not yet given this book to my 7-year-old-granddaughter and hope that she is not too young for it. She is definitely a reader and likes to write so I just ignored the suggested age of 8 and ordered it for her. It is a beautifully arranged journal, nice illustrations and for me, fun references to major fashion designers. I have been in the fashion industry so I could relate to the names, but I doubt that my granddaughter will be aware of these "famous" people. However, I expect she will enjoy jotting down her views on clothes, etc. This book is a good way to keep a child busy without worrying about any kind of mess! And hopefully, I may get to work on it with her.

Birth of Mass Politics in Egypt

This is a solid work of scholarship, and serves a nice supplement to Mitchell's more expanded work. However, given that the new information handled by B. Lia offers merely a refinement of our understanding of the Brotherhood rather than a radical revision, one is recommended to rather begin with Mitchell-whose book is available in paperback, is more established, and is a fraction of the cost. Contrary to D. Pipes' and others' reviews, Mitchell's work does not portray the Muslim Brotherhood as reactionary. This rhetorical device of point, counter-point does considerable injustice to Mitchell's work.
Standing on its own, this work is well written and easy to follow. Lia is able to delve into the mechanics of the organization on a social and political level in order to reveal just how it reached the amount heights of success that it did. The result is a picture that explains well why it was a model so extensively copied and exported throughout the Muslim world. If there is any comparison to be made to Mitchell's work, this would certainly be the proper feature to focus on. Overall, Lia gives a much more lucid, detailed account of the Muslim Brother as a social organization and makes a convincing case for the organization being the first grass-roots political movement in Egypt with its origins and leadership from the poorer classes [unlike the Wafd]. What is lost, however, is comprehensive picture of the whole-and this due partly to the limited time frame of the study-wherein the Brotherhood's other distinguishing features [e.g., its religiosity, transformation during political persecution, etc.] are obfuscated.

"The best known study of Egypt's foremost fundamentalist Islamic movement, Richard Mitchell's Society of the Muslim Brothers (1969) portrayed the organisation as a reactionary response to Westernization mounted by those left in its wake ... Now, however, a thoroughly different (and much improved) interpretation rules, one that sees the Muslim Brothers and like movements as a facet of modernization. Their personell are urbanites dealing with the cutting edge of modern problems; their ideas, methods, and goals all incorporate modern ways; and they show far more willingness to learn from the West than was hitherto realized.
In a very impressive research effort into the early years of the Muslim Brothers, Lia (a Norwegian scholar) relies on new sources and deep knowledge of his subject to show convincingly just how well that movement does fit the new interpretation. He establishes that it organized in ways novel for Egypt and mobilized elements of the population hitherto neglected. But its greatest importance lay in developing an answer to the rampant European ideologies of the 1930s: in this, the Muslim Brothers began "a lasting process of renewal .. in which religion was related to the modern age and all aspects of modern life." With justification, Lia concludes that the Muslim Brothers' reinterpretation of Islam will remain 'the most far-reaching Islamic renewal this century' ".

"Lia's book provides a fresh reassessment of the growth of the Muslim Brothers. He does so by drawing on a wealth of recently discovered documents, including the Society's own internal publications from the 1930s and '40s, British intelligence reports and al-Banna's personal letters.
While touching on issues of ideology and anti imperialism, Lia places great emphasis on the Society's structure and its activities within Egypt to explain its early phenomenal growth. Rather than a reaction to modernity, he argues that the Society itself was a modern organization, open to new technologies and ideas. (..)
The violence and radicalism within the organization prove to be among the thorniest issues in the book. While the Muslim Brothers provided the organizational model for today's radical Islamic groups, to some extent they also provided the template of violence. Lia argues that the Society, while calling for an all-Islamic "struggle" on various occasions, was not inherently violent. The Muslim Brothers did have a military wing, the so-called Special Section, but this, he says, was a way to channel the radical energies of the more energetic younger members. This element of violence can be traced back to a split within the Muslim Brothers in 1939. As a reaction to al-Banna's accommodationist political activity, a group calling itself the Society of Our Master Muhammad's Youth split off from the main organization. Throughout the next decades, this group would continue to splinter, creating the network of violent Islamic groups which plagued Egypt today (..) Lia argues that the growing radicalism resulted from government efforts to shut these Islamic groups out of the Egyptian political system. Lacking a legitimate outlet for their energies, he argues, these groups can easily turn to the option of terrorism.
"The Society of the Muslim Brothers in Egypt 1928-1942" is an important contribution to our understanding. If any complaint can be leveled it is at the circumscription of the book's time frame. Lia limits his study from the beginning of the Society until 1942 (..)Numerous issues of interst arose in the Society's history after this period from the involvement of the Muslim Brothers in the 1948 war against Israel to the 1949 assassination of al-Banna and Nasser's eventual outlawing of the Society. A wider study would further consider the development of violence within the Muslim Brothers and its splinter groups and offshots. One can only hope that Lia has plans for a companion volume"
