Angela Duckworth, PhD, is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Good stories, difficult to justify a full book

I commend the author for her effort on this book. The stories of people with the ability to persist are lively and interesting, but the overall feeling is of reading small vignette style biographies of people who are smarter, better, and more talented than you are, with anecdotal insights sprinkled throughout.

There's a measure of inspiration in her foundational message that, through hard work and persistence, you can become the best version of yourself. Her main point is that it's unlikely that you know your own limits, and that the act of striving against them each day can take you to an unexpectedly good place. However, the true value of this book would have been to teach us the best methods for increasing and maintaining our own grit, and to show that those methods are proven through research. Unfortunately, that doesn't yet exist because the research hasn't been conducted, except in a preliminary fashion.

Because that answer doesn't exist, the book and stories are reduced to a collection of recitations of interviews of successful people, not unlike other business and self-help books. It has a dusting of authority from the author herself, since she has substantially contributed to the field. An interested reader can glean their own lessons from that material, in additions to the insights the author provides. Still, the book lacks true weight, and would be greatly served by an update in a few years as the author and her peers conduct more research on the subject.

Save yourself a pile of time and just read her paper "Grit: perseverance and passion for long-term goals", Journal of personality and social psychology, 2007. This book is the results from there, plus a collection of exaggerations and cherry-picked anecdotes.

Presents a clear picture of the propagation of optical waves in layered media and teaches the reader how to design and analyze optical devices using such media. The present treatment bridges the gap between theory and practice by means of numerical examples based on real-life situations. Only classical electrodynamics is used in dealing with the interaction of light with matter, except in the last chapter on quantum wells. Included are tables containing indexes of refraction, extinction coefficients, birefringence, and other important material properties.

About the Author
POCHI YEH obtained his PhD in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1977 for his research on nonlinear optics and optical properties of superlattices. Before he joined the electrical and computer engineering faculty at University of California–Santa Barbara in 1989, Dr. Yeh was the principal scientist of the Optics Department at Rockwell International Science Center in Thousand Oaks, California. Dr. Yeh is known for several important contributions in optics, including the development of a matrix method for optics of layered media; the theory of photorefractive phase conjugators; and the theory of wave mixing in nonlinear media.

The best book on layered media.

This is a fantastic book for scientists and engineers dealing with EM waves in stratified/layered media. It covers the simple case and anisotropic cases. Clearly presents both Fresnel equations, Airy sums, multilayer transfer matrices, and about everything else you want when dealing with these materials. Is also very practical and presents equations clearly, it is less theoretically oriented so it is great for piratical use, giving you what you need instead of just the starting point. If you deal with EM waves and dielectrics - just buy the book.

Any study of the great Welsh Revival must include a study of Jesse Peen-Lewis's writings. she had a profound affect on the life of the main evangelist of that revival. She also was a leading writer of that day on spiritual warfare.

Suducing the Spaniard....

I don't give many five stars but this one deserves it. Here Clare Connelly has written a emotional story of young love gone wrong. When Carrie was only seventeen she had a huge crush on her much older step-brother, Gael. But she, in her eyes was not thin, or pretty enough for him. When she witnessed the unthinkable she became like her mother. Using men only for sex. Now years later she and Gael are back in the same area. What will she do to show him that all she wants is just sex? This story had a lot going for it being under a hundred and fifty pages. Clare did it brilliantly. And with my favorite type of ending, HEA.

There's genuine love and affection there. I caught one glaring typo. Hope they can proofread more.

Loved the HEA after all that heartache from both sides. A very grown up story.

I thought this book had a very good story line. The book was well written without any noticeable grammar errors. The sexual tension was well defined. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
James Kilgore is a formerly incarcerated person who currently teaches in the Center for African Studies at the University of Illinois. He is the author of a number of novels and an educational text about Zimbabwe. He lives with his family in Champaign, Illinois.

Wonderful book for understanding one of the most important social

Whether you know nothing about mass incarceration or have an advanced understanding of mass incarceration, this book is for you. Kilgore does a beautiful job of composing this book in a way that is absolutely approachable and could even be a fast read for some. However, don't let this approachable style fool you. The text is rich with perspective. Kilgore presents the complexity of mass incarceration in a way that is balanced and informative. Yet, the message of this text is not lost. And that message is that mass incarceration is truly the civil rights struggle of our time and it is our urgent responsibility to critically engage with it.

Looking for something to help put the US prison system in context? This is a superb introduction

This is a great introduction to mass incarceration. A good overview, a few stories, and enough facts and figures so you are armed with facts, but not so many to bog down the narrative.

Kilgore also does a great job exploring the causes of the growth of the system, deconstructing the term "Prison Industrial Complex," and exploring alternatives, including restorative justice, transformative justice, and abolition.

Final note: It took me a month to finish this book. During that month I visited 6 prisons, and reading about prisons was not exactly the best way to unwind at the end of a long, emotionally draining day of ..... visiting prisons. But doing so puts the immediacy of the horrors I saw everyday in perfect context. It is a good, quick read.

Great read on important subject

Kilgore has an amazing talent for gathering and presenting the facts on this important subject. His lucid, economic writing style and the unique formatting of this book kept my attention cover to cover. An important read for every taxpayer who wonders where their tax dollars are going and more so for anyone concerned with judicial justice and incarceration. He writes from the heart and head.

What is the difference between a Repair Manual and a Service Manual?
Bentley Publishers publish two types of repair manuals:

*Service Manuals

Starting with a clean sheet of paper and the official factory service, repair, and training information, our automotive editors set out to create a condensed authoritative service manual aimed at both the do-it-yourself owner and professional technician. Service manuals often include additional troubleshooting tips, routine maintenance hints, and model-specific repair information not found in the Official Factory Repair Manual.

The Official Factory Repair Manuals contain repair information that the dealer-trained service technicians use everyday. The information is developed by the manufacturer primarily for the professionally trained technician. The Official Factory Repair Manuals usually contain more information than the service manuals and assume a high level of automotive experience and skill. Bentley manuals are very useful

If you plan on owning your VW for many years (I have one that I bought in 1992) and you aren't afraid of touching your car, then you should have a Bentley manual for your VW. It basically tells you how the car can be disassembled and reassembled so that you can perform repairs and replace broken parts. Even if the work is beyond your capabilities, it helps you diagnose problems and informs you of what needs to be done. Bentley manuals are a worthwhile investment.

I bought this book because I buy one for all my VWs and it was highly discounted on Amazon. These manuals were critical before the Internet. Now you can go to vwvortex, and after much searching, find information similar to this manual (sometimes with lots of good photos). I generally check both.

Even though my car is relatively new (6 years old), there have been two instances where I needed this manual and was happy I had it on hand. This manual is nicer than previous Bentleys. It uses high quality paper, better printing, and even includes beautiful color diagrams (the Jetta Sportwagen manual is hardcover).

Update: I gave this book a four star rating instead of five because starting with the mkV generation (2006+) VWs have been transformed from mechanical devices to computers with mechanical parts. This increased complexity has reduced the utility of the Bentley manual even though it is better than Bentleys for earlier VW models. But it definitely still worth buying.

Money Well Spent

Prior to purchasing this manual, and before beginning any car maintenance or repair, I would scour the web for a reliable how-to. Many times, this method proved time consuming and confusing.The time and frustration saved by having an accurate, easy to read and understand reference made for money well-spent. If you plan on doing ANY maintenance, I highly recommend you have this manual at your side.
