Your best teacher of IM?

I bought this edition, even though I had the green (4E) version. I use this book every day since the first day of my third year rotations for Internal Medicine topics (now I am a resident). Pocket Medicine gives you everything you need, regarding the latest information about Internal medicine. Now for those who've never heard of it, or are considering buying this book, why is it so good? It is concise and it gives you the key points. If you really wanted to get more information then you probably need to go to uptodate or the next step up, the holy bible of IM itself, Harrison's. Pocket Medicine is designed to give you everything you need, in your pocket (as if our white coats aren't heavy enough). And the best part about this book versus other pocket manuals is that it cites real articles. NEJM, JAMA, Lancet, real sources of evidence based medicine. Evidence based should be the goal of every medical student, resident, and physician's basis of how they practice. Now the book takes some use to with the abbreviations, acronyms, and how it's formatted out, but once you get used to it, you will be looking up things very fast and before you know it, you will be citing pages in Pocket Medicine. For medical students, anything that your attending is pimping you on, its probably in this book (and its probably more updated than what your attending is looking for). For residents, don't waste any more time trying to figure out admit orders off uptodate, just get it done with this book.

Now for those who had the green medicine book, you're wondering, is it really worth the 60 dollars? Medicine doesn't change very much and many treatment protocols are still the same (except for maybe chemotherapy regimens). However, after scanning through about 10 topics, there's at least a one line update (usually more in the range of 3-5). Will it change how you will practice? Unlikely, especially if you were following the green book. But yes, there's abundance of changes everywhere. For example, they updated cystitis even though it's a bread and butter IM issue - I'll leave it to you to buy the book to find out the update ;) although I warn you, its not drastically different. But there are some definite useful updates such as how aggressive you want to be on diabetic management according to the latest guidelines. How aggressive should you be on HgA1c or the BP? You could spend tons of time looking it up, or just flip to the page in 5 seconds. The new consult sections aren't real deal breakers in my opinion (Surgical, Ob/Gyn, Optho) because you're probably going to consult those specialists anyways, but its nice to have. At least you'll sound a little smarter when you talk to them for the consultation? The new sections like anaphylaxis and nutritional issues aren't major additions to warrant to buy this book over the green/4e book.

Would I still recommend buying this book? Yes. But if you're a poor resident who already had the green book and don't want to spend money that should be going to payback your loans, I would stick to the green book.

My only real negative about this edition is that they used the new "recycle"-like paper (the thin type) over what they were using for the green 4e book. It feels cheaper and easier to rip. Otherwise, I recommend it as the gold standard of pocket manuals :D

Buy this and a couple other resources for clerkships, rotations, internship, residency

This book is obviously a must-have book for your internal medicine inpatient work whether it's as a medical student, intern, or resident. It is extremely concise, has wide breadth, and is full of citations and evidence. The thing is, it can be a bit too concise. With all the acronyms, you feel like you're reading a different language sometimes. Also, sometimes the guidance is not that flushed out. As you get more and more accustomed throughout residency, it becomes better and better. As such, I'd recommend complementing it with a couple other must-haves:

1) UCSF Hospitalist Handbook - the info is a bit more practical and step-by-step than Pocket Medicine. It's a great complement or alternative (you can get the iPhone/Android version for cheaper through AgileMD). Because it gives way more tangible, practical diagnostic and management steps than the Red/Green book, all my residents would be super surprised at how much more "mature" and "relevant" my diagnostic and management plans were in my presentations. They thought I was a genius and further along than most of my classmates...(and I wasn't too keen on letting them know where most of that genius was coming from :)

2) Sanford Guide (microbio) - this is really the best book for any microbio you'll need on the wards. You'll look like you actually paid attention during microbio with this book. The typie is very small ad the paper quality sucks. can be a bit slow to navigate through. You can look stuff up by organism or condition, and it has a spectrum of bacteria sensitive to each antibiotic.

3) Tarascons (pharm) - It is far and away the fastest way to get your hands on dosage, forms available, and pricing data. I can't tell you how much of a superstar you'll look like if you actually are talking about dosing as a medical student. This is not something any med students are familiar with. That alone makes this book worth it. Color tabs have made it easier to navigate through. Some of the older drugs are gone. The tables are awesome.

4) Download medscape for general reference questions here n' there. Personally, I like it more than epocrates...and it's free.

5) +/- Maxwells...quickly becomes unnecessary but nice to have in the beginning when you're just learning the ropes and need refreshers on some of the stuff you learned back in 2nd year.

6) Netflix- for call-nights and unwinding when you actually get a day off! True Detective is a phenomenal series.

Your new Bible

THIS is a classic and must-have for med students and residents.

I had the 4th edition which, sadly, was stolen. Now, who would take a beat-up, VRE & MRSA ridden old book?!? Well, that all depends on the book. And apparently, THIS one was worth grabbing for keepers.

Full of quick signs, symptoms and management WITH references to landmark journal articles to impress your attendings! Heck, I've even seen attendings with this baby. (Yeah, they don't admit it.)

Definitely worth getting a replacement pristine copy, even at $60. Fits in your pocket, more valuable than a stethoscope (maybe). Don't bother with the e-version, having this on your person, being flip-able is half the value (not to mention there is a HUGE perception difference between looking up things on your phone-slash-tablet and this very recognizable resource. Take my word for it, with the former everyone will assume you're just texting or something.). Whipping this out to looks stuff up is always welcome in the hospital, under most any circumstances. Plus, the mini-binder format (rather than a spiral or bound type format) allows you to add your own pages!

5 stars! I recommend getting even if you're not going into internal medicine, as this really covers the stuff we should know.

One-stop shop for your trip planning

This book is amazing! Wife and I are planning our first trip abroad together and this book has EVERYTHING you need to plan a visit to Italy. We supplemented with other resources but if you start here, you will find everything you need. I appreciate especially the 'self-guided walking tours,' the extensive lodging & eating options, and the tips on how to reach your destinations after arriving in train stations or airports. There is even a priority list with recommended cities to see if you only have X number of days (anywhere from 4-21) days in country - but each city chapter also has a "Rome in a day" type section as well.

I do wish some of the maps were larger, but for planning purposes, this book is excellent.

I got 3 travel books, Lonely Planet, Frommers, and Rick Steves. I find Rick Steves easiest to follow and I use it the most. But I also look at Framers and Lonely Planet when planning our trip. I'll probably take just the Rick Steves with us when we go.

Best of the 3 guidebooks I purchased for Italy

I have really been enjoying this guidebook. I have purchased 3 different guidebooks for my trip to Italy and this has been by far my favorite. It is very easy to read, provides some historic information but is by no means excessive like some of the other guidebooks. I feel like I am getting really good information from someone who has traveled to the area many many times. Rick adds something extra that the other guidebooks just don't do. For example, in the section of the cinque terre he discusses the hikes that are marked but also adds in a few detours of his own. I felt as I was reading like I was right there having a conversation with Rick. I would choose this guidebook over others for traveling in Italy. It is nice that you can rip pages out and leave the rest of the book home for areas tat you don't plan on traveling to. So many good tips in this book!

If you want to create apparel patterns, this is the book for you.

Buy this book! It will unravel the mysteries of making apparel patterns. I have two college degrees plus advanced studies in apparel design. Yet Suzy Furrer's patternmaking methods opened my eyes and made the process of patterning a pleasure. I have since used her methods to create my own line of garments -- StudioSKB. Her book is the text for my patterning classes at Art Institute of Portland and Portland Sewing. From moulage to slopers to creating designs, the step-by-step instructions are easy to use and understand. It simply makes sense!

A Bloodguard Vignette

This book is really nothing more than a vignette, a deleted scene from The Illearth War. According to Donaldson's foreward this was part of an initial separate section to the novel. However, he realized (after being told by his publishers to cut the manuscript down) that the story (told from the perspective of Korik the Bloodguard) didn't have a narrational connection to Covenant's world, thereby weakening the perception of the Land's unreality so key to Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Therefore along with Tull's story this episode would have comprised the fourth section of the novel.

However, all of that said I would definately recomend this to anyone who loved the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. You learn more about the Bloodguard in these few pages than in almost the three novels of the first Chronicles--furthermore it is simply insightful and interesting to see things from the perspective of a Bloodguard.

Don't bother with this if you've not read The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Simliarly you don't need this if you already have Donaldson's collection of short stories Daughter of Regals.

However, if neither of the above apply then you should hunt down this book, especially since this volume will fit better with hard back volumes and includes several illustrations not found in the collection (though the one of Revelstone clearly does not mesh with the book description and the one found in the Atlas of the Land).

Focus is the Bloodguard not Covenant.

A series of chapters, removed from the Illearth War book (it was already too large a volume and required editing) These chapters remove Covenant as the narrator, and focus on the Bloodguard, including rituals, origin and why THEY chose to protect the Lords. Their history and involvement is clarified with this text. I agree it has no place within the chronicles as the viewpoint is that of a third party, however, as a separate book it makes interesting reading when positioned as originally written in the middle of the Illearth War, although the tome was released as an afterthought following the end of the second chronicles. Is this an attempt by Donaldson to sell more books? Or is he genuinely concerned that the reader understands more about the Bloodguard? Read it and make your own decision.

Gilden Fire is is the result of one of the earlier modern fantasy writers inability to write anything short. Obviously a disease that has proved seriously catching.

Because the Illearth War was too long originally and threatened to turn into a black hole, this is a part chopped out of there and deals with Korik the Bloodguard's quest to Seareach, so is not a Thomas Conveant story as far as that goes, directly.

Lords, Giants, fighting as a big finale, too.

My new favorite 5E book

Volo's Guide To Monsters is now, without a doubt, my new favorite 5E book. Part 1 contains a LOT of in-depth information about some of D&D's most notable adversaries: Beholders, Giants, Mind Flayers, and others. The second part contains new racial options for players; IIRC, some of these were presented in other books, but it is nice to have them collected in one place. The rest of the book has a bestiary of new creatures, great and small, as well as some "plug and play" NPCs.

For the DM, this book is a treasure trove; I tend to buy 5E books for inspiration, and don't really play pre-generated campaigns, and VGtM is helping me take the campaign I'm running in some exciting new directions (at least, for me). Also, I'm all about giving players more options, so the new player races are also extremely interesting to me. I don't know how much I'll use the pre-gen NPCs, but they're handy to have, just in case.

One of my favorite things about the book is the chief conceit of its design. Peppered throughout the book are comments of Volothamp Geddarm (the "Volo" of the title) and the archmage Elminster Aumar. These little side notes add a lot to the flavor of the book, and help the reader immerse him/herself in the world.

EDIT: Another thing I like about this book that I just discovered is that the index of the book has monsters sorted by challenge rating and sorted by location. So, if you're hunting for creatures in, say, the Underdark, it's extremely easy to find them in the book. Nice addition!

A must-buy book for DM's. A treasure trove of inspiration with new races, monsters, and in-depth monster lore

This is a great addition to 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. The cutesy banter between Volo and Elminster is kept to a minimum, leaving some really great, meaty content. While I just received my print copy today, I've been using the online version through Roll20 for two weeks. My review is based on two weeks of experience with the content, plus sitting with the physical book today.

What exactly are you getting in this book?

- Nearly 90 pages of in depth monster lore, focusing on Beholders, Giants, Gnolls, Goblinoids, Hags, Kobolds, Mind Flayers, Orcs, and Yuan-ti. This is very in depth work, with multiple pages providing variants, tables, lairs (including maps), historical background, and even some of the psychology of the creatures that can really help you flesh out these types of creatures in your games.

- 7 new Player Character races, including Aasimar, Firbolg, Goliath, Kenku, Lizardfolk, Tabaxi, and Triton. These are a nice edition, and I especially like how the details for these new races includes tips on how to role-play as these slightly more unique creature types. Overall, these new races feel like they can breathe a lot of new life into campaigns for players who might be starting to get tired of the standard set from the Player's Handbook.

- 6 new Monstrous Player Character races, which feature groups that were represented in the first 90 pages. These are more limited/specialized builds that a DM would really need to weigh before including in a game, but absolutely could provide some fantastic adventures for the right group of players. The 6 Monstrous races represented are Bugbear, Goblin, Hobgoblin, Kobold, Orc, and Yuan-ti Pureblood.

- An expanded Bestiary.The next 99 pages of the book are dedicated to new monsters for your games. There are an excellent variety of new creatures, including some favorites that didn't make the original Monster Manual. Personally, I was glad to see a nice balance between creature types, and that these new creatures help round out some of the groups, such as Fey. It also is nice to see a book like this deepen the bench; this section of the book provides an especially large amount of new monsters of the type covered in the first 90 pages (Beholders, Giants, Gnolls, Goblinoids, Hags, Kobolds, Mind Flayers, Orcs, and Yuan-ti). A full 10 pages of this is also used to create new NPC stats, which is a great boon to be able to build encounters that stretch across a wider CR level in more civilized locations.

- The book wraps up with 4 pages of Appendixes which provide a quick reference no matter how you are looking for a creature: you can find them by CR level, by Creature Type, or by the typical environment that you would find the monster in.

All in all, the content is incredibly useful for any dungeon master who wants more content. The new monsters alone are worth the price of admission. The new character races are also an excellent new addition, although their uniqueness may make them more useful for some groups over others; that said, options are always nice to have. The first 90 pages of lore will be most useful to DM's who are planning on using the types of creatures listed in their campaigns. Especially if you are using those creature types, I highly recommend this as an addition to your collection, as the amount of material provided on these creatures is sure to spark your imagination and spin new adventures for your table.

The Perfect Supplement

I'd just like to clarify before I begin my review that I'm not jumping the gun by reviewing the first day of non-game store release. I purchased the alternate cover version from my local game store Nov 4th, and have used that version extensively since.

Now, I really have to get this out there: this. book. is. AMAZING. It has some amazing creatures that I thought were horribly left out by official D&D sources this edition (the expansion of fiends itself is worth the buy to me).

The new player races are awesome, and with my limited playtesting since FLGS release, all seem mostly balanced (my party had some issues with some vague wording here and there but that's probably mostly due to their goal to drive me thoroughly crazy). Like, 10+ new (significant, not variations of already released variables) races added is a pretty big deal.

The lore bits and flavor are both top-notch, though I personally found the interactions between Elminster and Volo to be a tad - I don't know, childish? Cringey? For the most part, though, it wasn't an issue, and usually the information conveyed by the interactions is important (different takes on the creature you can have fitted for your campaign). I should also note that my friend and fellow DM had no problem with the dialogue.

The lair information is great, but I really wish there was more.

The binding seems a bit sturdier than the previous WotC publications, but I only received the non-FLGS copy this morning. You can rest assured that I will update my review as soon as a page falls out, or if I note an issue with the printing itself.

The layout of the book is great. It's nice to have the list by CR at the back of the book - a feature missing from the Monster Manual.

Overall, my nit picks don't really matter when one considers the quality of the book. It's honestly a must-buy for any 5th edition enthusiast. If you're new to the hobby, however, you might want to wait a bit before buying.

Twenty-year-old information lacks relevance

This book was an assigned reading for a Women's Studies class in which I am enrolled. While I found some of the thoughts presented to be insightful, I was upset with the inclusion of old information. Most of the studies cited were from the 1980's, with some being over twenty years old. I do believe there is still a major problem in this country with oppression (gender and racial). However, I feel that great strides have been made in the last two decades, and to present old, outdated information only serves to reopen old wounds.

The copyright on this book is 2004. I am truly disappointed that the supporting data used gives a distorted view of the presentation.

"Tools: Working Wood in 18th Century America", by James M. Gaynor and Nancy L. Hagedorn

From the title I was expecting a substantial amount of "what" and "how it was done". But that kind of information is pretty sparse in this book. However...
It IS an interesting and very well done museum representation of the early woodworking toolmakers; their customs, circumstances, distribution systems, etc. In fact, it was actually written specifically to accompany a Williamsburg Foundation exhibit of antique tools that the Foundation assembled back in the 1990s. About half the book is pictorial and it also contains an elementary woodworking glossary. So if you are a museum curator, a collector interested in makers' marks on tools, or just like Americana trivia, you'll probably enjoy this book. If you are interested in instruction or tips about using and caring for early American woodworking tools you will need to look elsewhere.
