Reading from VIII position

Ideal in order to expand your reading beyond the firsts frets of the guitar.
Of course I think is better to make studies based on reading in the previous frets before.
Maybe the best way to face this studies , is not repeat them many times, but trying to be accurate from the first reading and repeat very few times,increasing your concentration.

A must for the guitarist who wants to do things right!

If you are a guitarist who wants to build the fundamentals and knows how to read music (which you should know if you want to do things right), then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you are Joe Metalhead who wants to impress your friends with power chords, go somewhere else and quit reading the rest of this.

I have played guitar for 20 years. I took some private lessons years ago, which helped me to build the proper foundation. I also know how to read music. I hit the wall about a year ago and found that I hadn't really learned scales the way I should. This book and others from Berklee have fixed that. Of course, it has taken work but EFFORT = RESULTS. Much of what is out there is like the crumbs that fall from the table compared to this book and others like it from Berklee.

One caution... as a prerequisite, you should be familiar with the scale patterns as taught in Modern Method volumes 1-3. If you are not, you will have trouble finding the proper fingering for some of the pieces of music.

If you really want to know the guitar and advance, spend the $15 or so for this book. You will never regret it!

After buying "Reading Studies for Guitar" I knew that "Advanced Reading Studies for Guitar" would be a perfect companion. This second installment of reading studies covers positions 8-12. I can definitely say my playing level has been sharpened and I am now more confident about my playing abilities.

Good, but with additional textbook would be even better

This book was the best I could find for expanding Italian vocabulary. I liked thematic approach and the fact that the book is not focused just on traveling themes (transportation, ordering food, visiting places etc.) like so many others. There are examples for almost every word that is introduced. Also, by keeping a simple grammar book aside for consulting when you stumble upon some "strange" use of verbs you are not familiar with, you can start forming real sentences instead of just memorizing a bunch of words.
At the end of the book there is also a small grammar section that should be expanded by twenty or so pages. It should also suggest what verb tenses are used in spoken Italian and what you can usually find only in literature. For that use I purchased Essential Italian grammar by Olga Ragusa which is pretty thin but is just enough.
I would like this book to have additional textbook or some word exercises so I can quiz myself and review words at the end of the each chapter. This way it is a little hard to know which words you have really memorized after few days or few weeks.
I liked Barrons book "1100 words you need to know" I used for building English vocabulary and I would like to see a book like that written for building Italian vocabulary.

Mastering Italian Vocuabulary (a thematic approach)

This was an excellent companion book for my casual study of Italian. It is somewhat similar to a travel "phrase book", yet is has more comprehensive applications of grammar and colloquial speech for all occasions. Included is an excellent verb conjugation "breakdown" chart and a highly relevant glossary at the end of the book. Having studied 2 other romance languages formally in college, this book to me was reminiscent of an indispensable auxiliary learning guide for second (or even third) year language students.

Mastering Italian Vocabulary

An excellent way of increasing once vocabulary. For people (like me) who have reached a basic knowledge of the language but want to increase conversational use through increased number of words. The book provides 24 different aspects in life e.g. Food & Drink, Art & Music etc with all its different words and usages in everyday life. I find that by just reading through one of the categories at regular intervals (say daily or weekly), I gradually retain more and more words and usages.

GMO: What it Does to Us

This is not really a review of this book. I would like to emphasize the merit Fritjof Capra has, as a mainstream scientist, to have unveiled the negative effects of genetically modified organisms, commonly called GMO. There are indeed interesting political and social hidden connections that Capra unveils in this book, while admittedly this subject is not the main tenet of the book. But for me personally it was revelatory which is why I decided to write this review only about this part of the book, leaving it to others to review it in its general focus.

There are probably still people around who are fond of biotechnology, but I guess they just ignore the facts, and their knowledge is for the most part taken from the huge amount of propaganda material. Was it only for this enlightening information, the present book is worth its price as it daringly unveils the hidden facts and tells the truth! For I was one of those ignorant scholars, and in my case this weighs especially heavy against me, for I was trained as an international lawyer. But honestly, I never heard of the matter at university. It was through the Internet, through Wikipedia, that I first found information about it, some years ago.

Now let us honestly ask: why do we need biotechnology? I guess certain people, corporations and their consorts need it for making huge amounts of money. But is it tolerable in a democracy that all suffer from the side effects of technologies that enrich a few? I learnt as a law student that such a kind of system is called an oligarchy, the reign of an elite. So I am seriously asking how we ever came to say that we are living in a democracy?

Why do we need superpigs? It seems to me that they are the result of quantitative thinking, a primacy of quantity over quality, and this for the obvious reason of maximizing profits. This is a good example for the fact that we live in what has been called ‘the corporate society’, as the prototype of a society in which major corporations dictate the standards the government is going to follow and to enact as laws.

As a trained lawyer, I can clearly see that we are facing currently a challenge to legally codify these new technologies—lest, as it were, they are going to codify us, entraining us in a turbulence of faits établis, and then the law will leap behind the actual developments. But the law should better accompany the research step by step so as to be updated with the explosive growth of these very heavily funded research disciplines.

Not an easy read, but very educational

This is a highly intelligent book that applies deep philosophical insights and the tenets of complexity theory to the natural world, the social system, and the global economic system. The average layperson will find it mentally challenging, but enlightening as well. Particularly interesting to me was the discussion of epigenetics, which shows that evolution is not a simple function of genes mutating, but a complex and little-understood interaction between genes and the individual organism's environment and personal choices. I agree with the author's view that the unchecked greed of the global financial systems will surely lead to the utter destruction of our natural environment, and the Enron debaucle shows just how removed from reality the assignment of a company's "worth" is in a financial system that is hopelessly tied up in speculations. The changes required to fix these problems would be nothing less than a revolutionary overhaul of the world's economic and political policies, and I do not share the author's optimism that this could happen merely by the action of grassroots organizations, no matter how organized they have become. It will take a global collapse for this to happen, because historically humans only make changes of that magnitude in the face of a crisis...we are not focused on prevention, especially if it means those with money will lose it. This is the only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5...Capra is just too idealistic.

This is an eye opening book

As in Capra's other books, he provides a easy to understand and compelling look at living systems. In this book he takes a substantial leap forward in providing a broad based look at the evolution of the field and the impact on systems that we are now experiencing in our world. He also provides examples and references to successful examples of what we can do if we have the will to do so. What a powerful reference and one that I refer to regularly. If there was but one book to understand living systems and how the science has evolved and the impact on our world, please read this book. I can not recommend it more highly.

About the Author
Tim Dressen is producer and cohost (along with his bride, Michele) of Five Hundy by Midnight, the first podcast devoted to Las Vegas news, reviews, and commentary. Debuting on Jan. 9, 2005, the show has attracted thousands of devoted listeners in all 50 states and more than three dozen countries. Five Hundy has also garnered media attention from publications including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and Las Vegas Review-Journal. The readers of VegasTripping voted Five Hundy by Midnight the Best Las Vegas Podcast eight times—every year it has been eligible—and voted Dressen the Las Vegas Person of the Year in 2015. He is also the editor of FremontStreetBars.com, a guide to the Downtown Las Vegas bar scene. A professional writer and editor by trade, Dressen earned a bachelor’s degree in print journalism from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. He has visited Las Vegas more than 60 times since 1997 but has no desire to live there. He remains an unapologetic Las Vegas outsider.

Informative and very entertaining!

As a longtime fan of the Five Hundy by Midnight podcast and a frequent Las Vegas visitor, I have been looking forward to Tim Dressen's book for some time. I was not disappointed. The book is well researched, informative, and very entertaining. The author's sarcastic wit is on full display while he provides a great deal of practical information to help visitors get the most from their Las Vegas trips. Throughout the book, links are provided to help the reader easily access schedules, fees and additional details. All of the major hotels and attractions are covered (one of my favorite lines being a description of the Rio hotel/casino theme as "Carnival of Sadness") and the book includes many useful tips on topics ranging from how far in advance to make reservations to "strategic restroom planning." This is not a book influenced by Las Vegas industry PR touts; the author is not afraid to provide his unvarnished views on what his readers should expect from the full range of casino/hotel, entertainment and drinking/dining options.

The most fun Vegas guide there is.

Author is a friend so I got to read a pre-release copy of this book.

As you'd expect, it contains all of the normal sort of bits and bobs about traveling to Las Vegas. What's different is the unique voice of the author. Tim Dressen's witty prose is just fun to read.

I'd recommend this book to both Vegas newbies and seasoned veterans. There's something in it for everyone.

Unbiased and What You Need

This book is so much better that the standard corporate guide books to Las Vegas or even the sometimes informative Lonely Planet types. Tim Dressen knows a lot about Las Vegas but has the spirit of a typical visitor in town for three or four nights who rarely leaves the tourist areas -- the Strip and Fremont St. The Outsiders' Guide includes all the information relevant to the typical visitor without trying to cover every chain restaurant or third rate off-strip motel. Things are different in Las Vegas and a good guidebook will help a newbie visitor a lot more than most "normal" tourist destinations. Dressen's podcast has caught on because he has resisted spouting the PR'isms that infect virtually everyone who is paid to promote nightclubs, casinos and restaurants. The book is an extension of what Tim and his wife, Michelle have been doing for years over the internet. Unbiased information about Las Vegas can be hard to come by. The Outsiders Guide is not the last word on everything that a Las Vegas lover might want, but it includes everything that most visitors need.

Too spartan for a novice, irrelevant for an expert

I was extremely disappointed with this book. It might just be useful as a supplemental college text, in a class in which multiple primary materials are read along with additional secondary material and which has a fine professor. Otherwise, its gaps, disjointed organization, and assumptions can be quite irritating for the reader. Don't even bother if you are not acquainted with ancient history. If you are, this book is more likely to leave you frustrated than informed. The author makes an implicit assumption that the reader is familiar with Latin (I am, but he didn't know that), and organizes the material neither chronologically nor thematically but a hybrid of each in which thematic chapters alternate with chronological ones. This would work except that the themes refer partly to the chapter before and partly to the chapter following which I found cumbersome. Major events such as the Punic Wars are handled in a cursory fashion, and little to no attention is paid to the acquisition and government of the provinces. Rome is repeatedly refered to as an oligarchy without once examining what that means. Lastly, the author covers much of the omissions with flat statements about the unreliability of existing sources (e.g. Plutarch) without discussing why, or to what extent. Instead, the reader is treated to the author's unexplained theories, and much rectitude concerning their superiority over others. Avoid this book unless you have literally read eveything else on the subject and still haven't had enough.

Michael Crawford's book is not for the novice. Those unfamiliar with the chronology of the Roman Republic will find his analysis confusing, as Crawford assumes his reader has considerable background in Republican Roman history and culture. For those with a decent hold on the events of the Republic, Crawford's keen analytical text to highly worthwhile. He examines the relationship between members of the Roman oligarchy, discusses the successful consolidation of Italy, examines the conquest of the provinces and its effect on Roman politics, and finally deals with the political destabilization that led to the rise of warlords such as Marius, Pompey, and Caesar. His book is part of an essential bibliography for any Classics major or Roman history buff.

At 200 short pages I thought this would be a nice introduction to the history of the Roman Republic. An introduction it was not. I am sure it is well-written for its audience, but the author assumes his reader already possesses an extensive knowledge of the republic, which makes me wonder why you would then want to read it. It is too subtle even for the thoroughly educated literati (did I use that word correctly?). Anyway, I bought the book, so by gosh, I read it! More seriously, the title and notes on the back are terribly misleading. Somewhere the notes need to convey that the book is intended only for specialists.
A new title is in order: "Scholarly Reflections on the Roman Republic," perhaps?

Yes. Get this.

This book was recommended to me as part of my treatment for panic disorder. I wouldn't have guessed that it was possible to completely cure panic disorder, but between this workbook and my therapist, it's been over a year since my last panic attack. I'm sure that it is a good idea to use this workbook under the guidance of a good therapist, but it gave me my life back. There aren't enough stars for that.
This is a therapy with good, solid science behind it. It doesn't ask you to ever do anything outrageous or dangerous. It is simple and reasonable, and worth every penny.

Very useful but

As a cbt therapist, I found this book and most of the books on the treatments that work series extremely helpful. Most are very well written with practical instructions that guide you step by step through therapy.

A few buts:
This fourth edition has a different outline, where the treatment is organized by skill (e.g. Breathing skills, thinking skills, situational exposure, interoceptive, etc), instead of by session. While this makes sense, it poses a bit of an organization problem for the reader. For example, in session 1, you cover the 2 or 3 chapters on psychoeducation and the first section on the chapter of medications, in session two, you cover section 1 of the chapter on breathing skills and section 1 and 2 on the chapter of cognitive restructuring. This turns out to be not practical, since one is expected to jump from chapter to chapter in 1 session. Not a big problem, one that can be overcome by simply having in mind the appropriate structure of the treatment (included in book) instead of following the chapter outline.

One major problem, that is present in all the books from the ttw series is the following:
I applaud the effort of having made some of the best, most effective, evidence based treatments readily available to clinicians and patients. Particularly having the therapy be aided by the use of the patient workbooks. But what happens to patients who do not speak English? (As is the case of my patients since I live in Mexico). I have no problem using the therapist guides, but the workbooks are completely useless for anyone who does not live in an English speaking country. So much for wide dissemination of EBTs! The real problem is that many of the treatments (including the MAP program) are dependent on the use of the workbook for appropriate or full delivery. For example: there is a chapter on this guide for handling medication taper, however all it does is direct me and the patients to the workbook for strategies to handle meds taper and withdrawal and it does not explain (in the therapist guide) what to do or say to the patient. So if I do not have the workbook because my patients can't use it, I'm left without that information. Other examples are the psychoeducational material or even worse, many of the forms and worksheets are only available in the workbooks. So my use of the therapist guide is limited without it. It seems a little unreasonable to buy whole books just for a couple of worksheets, self-monitoring logs and techniques that I'm going to have to translate my self anyway. (I am aware of the downloadable tools on the website, but still). One notable exception to this is Edna Foa's excellent guide on OCD, you hardly need the workbook to get the job done, although I'm sure it would help. The worst in this regard is Hope's treatment on social anxiety, they explicitly state that the therapist is to be thoroughly familiar with the workbook, and it is used all throughout therapy. So there is very limited use on not having your patients use the workbook.

All in all, even if your patients do not speak English they will benefit greatly from you reading the therapist guides. If they are English speaking, then I definitely recommend getting both the therapist guide and the workbooks.

I'm not a therapist but I bought this book along with the workbook to try to help a friend. Maybe it would be more helpful to someone skilled in this area. It has been more helpful for us to just use the workbook itself.
