Buyer Beware: contains zero real GMAT questions. Start with the free GMATPrep software and the GMAT Official Guides instead.

I am a Harvard graduate, 99% scorer and professional GMAT tutor with 16 years of experience, and it’s safe to say that I am not a fan of this book.

The fact that this is currently one of the highest-selling GMAT test-prep books on Amazon tells me that GMAT test-takers don't always know what they are doing, and perhaps that they don't realize that the 6 included tests (5 online CATs and 1 in the book) are not real GMATs. It also tells me that sometimes, marketing and hype can trump quality and realism. To me, Kaplan has always represented the lowest common denominator of test-prep books, and this one is no exception.

First, let’s contrast Kaplan’s book description with reality.

**Kaplan: “GMAT Premier 2017 is a comprehensive prep system that includes…”

**Reality: This book is quite full of information, yes, but it is clearly not comprehensive because it doesn’t include any official GMAT test questions. That’s right: there are exactly ZERO real GMAT questions in this book, despite the fact that there are nearly 4,000 real questions available to test-takers, straight from the test maker, through the free GMAT Prep Software (google "Download Free GMATPrep® Software - MBA.com" to find and download this software) and the 2017 Official Guide to the GMAT: The Official Guide to the GMAT Review 2017 Bundle + Question Bank + Video So how could this book ever be honestly marketed as “comprehensive?” I understand that there are copyright issues involved, but the least Kaplan could do is to mention that these official GMAT materials exist—otherwise it is doing its students and clients a disservice by making them feel fully prepared for the GMAT, when they in fact are not. If acing the GMAT were as easy as Kaplan makes it seem, then everyone would do it. The fact is that to maximize your score you need to put in hard work and practice with real GMAT questions.

Why are the GMAT Official Guides the very best place to start your GMAT preparation, other than the free GMATPrep software? Because the questions in these books are super-realistic. They are just like the questions on the real GMAT, because these books are written by the test-maker and use actual GMAT questions. Don't waste your time and money practicing on questions made by any other companies--these are merely inferior imitations of the real thing. If you must use other materials for test strategy and learning, then that's fine, and in most cases necessary, but try your best to stick to official questions whenever possible.

**Kaplan: “Kaplan guarantees that if you study with GMAT Premier 2017 online resources and book, you will score higher on the GMAT—or you'll receive a full refund.”

**Reality: So, if for some reason you have already taken the GMAT, and then you buy this book and try to use it, and your score doesn’t go up a single point (!), and you decide to go through the process of formally sending this book back and requesting your $22 refund, then we will request documentation and, after an inevitable bureaucratic delay, eventually give you your $22 back. Yes, you might get your money back, but you will still be stuck with a low GMAT score and nothing to show for it.

Am I surprised by any of this? No. I've been in the test-prep industry for a long time, and since then, this purgatory between mediocrity and incompetence is what I have come to expect from Kaplan. That, and an army of anonymous online droids who predictably show up on Amazon, immediately after any Kaplan book is published, brandishing predictably brief, vague and grammatically incorrect 5-star reviews. I would strongly suggest that students and parents read the many 5-star reviews of this book thoroughly to see which ones you feel are from actual GMAT test takers or parents, and not paid, anonymous reviewers.

TWO MAIN REASONS WHY I DON’T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK:

1) Kaplan is not horrible; it's just OK. That being said, the Manhattan Complete GMAT Strategy Guide Set (Manhattan Prep GMAT Strategy Guides), Powerscore The PowerScore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible and Princeton Review GMAT guides Cracking the GMAT Premium Edition with 6 Computer-Adaptive Practice Tests, 2017 (Graduate School Test Preparation) are all better than Kaplan's. Kaplan is the best at marketing, perhaps, but not the best GMAT strategy and learning book. I would suggest that you read the many (upcoming, trust me) 5-star reviews of this book thoroughly to see which ones you feel are from actual GMAT test takers, and not paid, anonymous online reviewers.

2) As I wrote earlier, the 2017 Official Guides to the GMAT are currently ranked lower on the GMAT best-sellers list than is this book by Kaplan. How is it possible that you would buy this book before you buy the Official Guides to the test you are taking? You should always try to practice with real GMAT questions whenever possible, because the practice questions in this book (and online) are noticeably different from real GMAT questions.

Amazon is a very democratic place, and anyone is given a voice, including unknown individuals with questionable agendas, so do your research and see what GMAT experts such as myself and others have to say about these types of "all in one" GMAT preparation guides.

If you sadly have to study for the GMAT I recommend getting this book.Left me feeling very prepared and ready to take the test. The book really makes you feel prepared for what is actually going to be on the exam and HOW the exam actually works. Excited to hear back from the MBA programs I applied for!! Good luck everybody!

Missing important text when you read it on the Kindle. Definitely wouldn't buy on Kindle again unless Amazon fixed this issue.

It was first printed in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation". Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow described various needs and used the terms "Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization and Self-Transcendence" needs to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through. Maslow studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people.

Executive Summary:
This is a review of A Theory of Human Motivation by A.H. Maslow. The target audience of the book are individuals who are looking to expand their understanding of Maslow’s theory of motivation. The book is an in-depth look into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and how it pertains to the motivation of individuals.

Strengths:
The strengths of the book are that it is written in a way that it can easily be understood by the average person and also that it is well written, without any noticeable grammatical mistakes. In addition, Maslow also uses commonly encountered examples to not only help the reader understand what he is getting at but also to help the individual see how it truly pertains to each individual.

Weaknesses:
The weaknesses of the book are the lack of detail and depth in regards to the testing of the theories; not all individuals are equal when it comes to their motivations and secondly, the layout of the book could be better, the sub-topics seemed to run all together and in my opinion, one column instead of two would allow for larger print

Reviews:
There have been many reviews in approval of this book, while there have only been two reviews in disapproval of this book. One of the disapproved reviews states that this book is not what they expected it to be, and that “it does not have the triangle.” This response must lead others to wonder as to whether this reviewer even read the book, due to the fact that the entire book was based directly in conjunction to the triangle (hierarchy of needs). The triangle itself is on the front cover of the book, however, it is not posted again anywhere else in the book. The triangle instead is written about within the book. It is broken down into each of its sections, in which each section is then given an in-depth review of how and why Maslow came to include that section within his hierarchy of needs. It is definitely easier to agree with another reviewer when he/she states that this book “gives clear reasons and excellent proof for his (Maslow’s) theories.”

Recommendation:
I recommend this book because it is a great insight into how people grow, learn and why they choose to do the things in which they do. This concept can be used to help understand infants, teenagers, adults, criminals, business leaders, entrepreneurs…the list goes on and on.

The book to read for ths serioulsy interested in the individual and what drives him. A group is composition of many individuals with similar drives and goals therefore understanding the severity of the contentious world we live in makes more sense than just the chaos we see. The understanding of such may lead to a solution. If not, we have yet to see the worst of it.

Missing Pages

The book itself is very helpful. It mostly focuses on the math behind the various statistical tests. I'd have liked if it spent more time talking about the theory behind what that math means. Still, if you're just looking for a book that explains what the different tests do and how to do them, then this book will get the job done. It uses a novel way of calculating ANOVAs though, using what it calls "bracket terms". This approach is pretty simple and time saving, but I think it makes the theoretical reasons for what you're doing less clear. The book also uses it's own set of terms, such as using "Y" to represent individual scores instead of the more common "x" (there's many more examples). If you've taken other stats classes before, this can be really confusing at first.

My big complaint is that my book was missing pages 278-324 out of the center of the book, obvious production error. I think that's a pretty serious lapse in quality control. I don't go through each book I buy looking for missing pages so I didn't realize the omission until chapter 13 suddenly became chapter 15 as I was reading it. Unfortunately, this was after the window for refunds had closed, so I'm stuck with a book missing an entire chapter and half of two others.

Very helpful book

I used this book in a graduate psychology stats course, and it was a very helpful resource throughout. This book is very text heavy, and is meant to read unlike some other books that may be used as-needed to look information up. The text is a little dry (it's stats, after all) but is easy to get through and understand. The examples were helpful to me in conjunction with my course material. This book might have been less helpful to me outside of a class setting, but I highly recommend it for use with a class or for someone looking for a book to read about statistics.

Good book

For all of you stats geeks in experimental psychology/behavioral neuroscience, this is a good book to get. It was suggested to me by my stats professor as the bible for experimental design. However, if you are not in this sub-sub-population, then this may not be your kind of book.

My favorite engagement calendar

Although everything seems to be electronic these days, I still prefer a paper engagement calendar for my personal use. I record all sorts of things in it - appointments, vacation information, exercise, etc. I purchase the Sierra Club Engagement Calendar every year. I have kept several years worth, which I can go back through and reminisce about various activities. The pages are not as thick as they once were, but I still find them to be of decent quality. The spiral binding makes it easy to flip through the pages. There is one week per page with ample writing space for each day. (See customer image.) Best of all, the photos of the animals and scenery are absolutely spectacular. I especially like it when I discover a picture or two taken in my own state. It makes me appreciate my surroundings that much more.

Still using a paper daily calendar rather than my phone. LOVE this one. Been using Sierra Club one for years. Love it because the weeks start on Monday which is when my week starts!

The Good, the Bad, and the Incarnated

The Crimson Vault does not begin where House of Blades left off. Rather, the book starts off with a bit of back story. Who saved Simon from the two Travelers at Latari Forest? Why was Simon and his family attacked in the first place? Who exactly is this Valin fellow? Answers to these questions are all contained within the first fifty pages.

And that's really what this book is about: fleshing out the details. House of Blades had an almost superficial quality to it. Witty dialogue and flashy action scenes? Yes! Detailed descriptions about culture or geography? Not so much. So after reading House of Blades, I felt a bit incomplete. The prose was excellent, the characters well thought-out, and the story line enjoyable. But where was the worldbuilding? Where was the nitty-gritty minutate that brings out my inner fan girl? I wanted to immerse myself into House of Blades, but there just wasn't enough substance for me to latch onto.

That's where The Crimson Vault comes in. It had depth. It has texture. It has richness. The same brilliant writing is there but there is a sense of underlying context behind every word. The attention paid to the social structure, history, and political relationships helps make this world as immersive and real as possible.

Of course, even good worldbuilding can't manage to overshadow the epic battles showcased throughout The Crimson Vault. Valinhall, as it turns out, has a lot more goodies to offer Simon besides liquid steel and Nye essence. Stone, diamond, and black gauntlet - I love how Will Wight introduces these new powers - they make each and every confrontation between Travelers memorable.

As for the other Travelers, Kai is as creepy as ever, Leah is even more manipulative, and Alin continues to merrily make every possible mistake he can. Lots of the characters are broken, and that's the way I like it! It helps steer the narrative away from the traditional good vs. evil paradigm, and kept me guessing which faction each character belonged to.

So is The Crimson Vault worth your $2.99? Without a doubt, yes! It is a refined and improved version of House of Blades. Well worth your money.

Good followup to the House of Blades

The House of Blades broke the old cookie-cutter mold of the fantasy genre by telling the story of Simon, your typical Villager A, along with Leah the Princess in Disguise and Alin the Chosen One. Their stories continue in this sequel.

Simon slowly becomes less Villager A and more Hero, all without the obligatory super talent. Will Wright avoids the pitfall of turning Simon into an invincible hero without having to marginalize his existence. There is no "special training," and every superpower has glaring flaws. We saw Simon him grapple with doing the right thing in The House of Blades, and that struggle continues in The Crimson Vault.

Overall, it is a great sequel that keeps all the things that made its predecessor worth reading while also introducing small new twists. Being the Chosen One isn't so great when the people worshiping you are basically terrorists. I look forward to seeing what Will Wright does with the next title in this trilogy.

Another awesome entry in the series.

I read the House of Blades a week ago and was pleasantly suprised to see the sequel come out so quickly (props to Will Wight for his speedy writing). I started reading it this morning and I literally couldn't stop reading (I may have decided not to go to some things I should have). Like the first, this book is heavy on action. There are very few scenes in this book without fighting or crazy magic and monsters. I love the characters and the humour and the story is never too predictable.

Like the first it is low on details but I think that is mostly a good thing as some authors can really waffle. Because the main characters, especially Simon, are in danger so constantly you do stop being concerned when they are in danger. Also the book tends to gloss over the fact that lots of innocent people are dying and could capture the horror of situations like that a bit better.

I think this and the first book are an amazing effort from a new author and I can't wait for the next book and I will be recommending this series to friends.

Hank Runs a Bluff (From Hank the Cowdog #1: The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog) Hank has been accused of murder! In a fit of despair, Hank resigns his position as Head of Ranch Security and decides to join the outlaw coyotes on the open range. There he's known as Hunk (that's Hank in coyote language). Hank meets Missy Coyote, sister to Scraunch -- the meanest, roughest, toughest, most notorious coyote in the whole country. If Scraunch found Hank with his sister... well, look out for trouble.

"How can a nice girl like you have such a bad brother?" said Hank.

Missy shook her head. "Hunk be careful. Not safe here."

"I ain't scared. Hank ready to fight whole family for Missy."

"Hunk in trouble. Whole family here."

I looked around. She wasn't kidding. The whole danged family had arrived. We was surrounded by lean-limbed, long-haired, scruffy-tailed, yellow-eyed, hungry-looking coyotes.

One of the first rules you learn in security work is never bite if you can bark; never bark if you can growl; never growl if you can talk; never talk if you can run.

In other words, when the odds are against you, the best kind of fight is none at all. That was my strategy, see. The longer I talked, the longer I could stay alive. And who knows, I just might say something that would change Scraunch's mind about tearing me limb from limb.

A hush had fallen over the tribe and all eyes were on the two of us. He sat down and leered at me.

I leered right back, tried to anyway, though I'd never really perfected a good leer.

"All right," I nodded, "you asked for it, you've really done it this time. Come on! Get off your duff and let's settle this thing once and for all. I'm tired of waiting. I mean, I came out here to get you, Scraunch. Oh, I know you thought I was messing around with your sister. Ha! That's just what I wanted you to think. It was a trap, Scraunch, and you walked right into it.

Missy glanced at me, and I gave her a smile and a wink.

Scraunch cut his eyes toward old Gut.

"Scraunch kill chicken dog."

I marched right up to him until there weren't more than a couple of inches between our noses.

"If you're determined to go through with this, let's get it on. But first, I want you to ask yourself this question: Why would a smart dog walk right into the middle of a bunch of coyotes? If you figger it out, you'll know the secret."

Nobody moved. There wasn't a sound, not a whisper. I was in the process of checking out the escape routes when an old woman coyote (Scraunch's mother) broke the circle and came out to him. She whispered something in his ear.

"No!" he growled. "Scraunch not scared, kill chicken dog!"

The old lady went to whispering again, then old Chief Gut limped over and joined the conference. They growled and snapped and snarled -- typical coyote family discussion, I would imagine.

"All right," I yelled, "time's up. Have you figgered out the secret or shall we start spilling blood?"

The old lady led Scraunch away. He glared daggers at me over his shoulder. Old Chief Gut came over and stood in front of me.

"Not fight today."

"Rats," I said, and almost fainted with relief. "All right, if that's the way you want it. We'll let it slide this time but I'm warning you, don't ever let this happen again."

"Not happen again."

"Very good. Now, if you coyotes will just stay where you are, I'll slip out of here and get on my way."

"Hunk not understand."

Missy came over.

"Hunk stay, become coyote warrior, prove himself many fight and marry Missy Coyote."

"HUH?"

"Make warrior? Well, I...I've always wanted...but I really have to..."

I tried to ease around the three coyotes who were blocking my path. When I moved, they moved. They didn't intend to let me out of there, is the way it looked.

Sheila and Jane have been colleagues and friends for… well, let’s
just say a long time. As English as a Second Language (ESL)
teachers, they worked together on lots of projects… and had lots of
fun as they worked. A partnership was born!
Together, Jane and Sheila have teaching credentials in several
states and two continents. With years and years… and years… of
experience (they just don’t want to count them all, ha!), they have
taught ESL to little kids, big kids, university students, adults, company
executives, and other teachers in the U.S. and Europe (both
online and in regular classroom settings).
Both Sheila and Jane have served as members of the New Jersey
Department of Education Advisory Committee for ESL/Bilingual
Education. They’ve facilitated online ESL training courses for teachers
through the NJ DOE professional development program. Sheila
has held several leadership positions scoring teacher candidate responses
for an international testing company, and Jane has written
ESL test questions and rated English as a Foreign Language exams
for another internationally recognized testing company. (They teach,
they test, they score!)
They have won many awards for excellence in teaching, including
two Teacher of the Year awards, and corporate citations for excellence.
They’ve given numerous presentations and have written curriculum
and syllabi for diverse ESL populations. Add to this some fun
teaching projects in Spanish, public speaking, drama, writing… and,
we’re not kidding, even soccer skills and you’ve got two writers who know how to have a good time writing a book!
Jane is now the Director of ESL Services for Emory College of Arts
and Sciences in Atlanta, Georgia. Sheila is a lecturer in the English
Language Program at the University of Pennsylvania, and continues
to teach, write and consult in New Jersey and New York. Although
they live several states away, both are happy to find time to work
together on fun projects… like this book!

a lot of fun reading it. Well, have fun, but also learn a lot about the
English language and American culture.
We’ve always loved English—the sound of the words, the fun of
the idioms, and the interesting way the words work together. We
also know that learning all this stuff can be a challenge to English
language learners. And that’s where our book comes in!
English the American Way: A Fun ESL Guide to Language and
Culture in the U.S. is your very own ... well, guide, to... yes, American
language and culture. You’ll find tons (a lot!) of vocabulary, all of it
used in real-life ways. We’ve included tons of informal language—the
stuff you really hear every day. And we take a look at American customs—
birth to death, and everything in-between!
We hope this book will be a help in your adventure learning English.

How This Book Works
This book has 21 units packed with language and culture!
Each unit has a main topic divided into two or three cultural readings. In these readings
and the dialogues that follow, you’ll find real English, not the simplified language
you find in most ESL books. The units are full of vocabulary and informal language—
tons of idioms, phrasal verbs and slang—bold within the text, then listed at the end of
each section with a simple explanation. Listen to the CD for native speaker pronunciation
of the dialogues, then pause and repeat to practice!
Look for grammar reminders, idiomatic expressions, culture tips, and fun facts.
Oh, and don’t forget to check your understanding (and memory) with the special
review sections. You’ll find them after every three units.

But how do you meet them?
Making new friends is an exciting part of moving to a new place, but sometimes it’s hard to know just how formal to be with new people. Americans are usually very casual. They’re also very friendly. This is a good thing, but it can be tricky. Everyone knows that good old basic English phrase, “Hello. It’s nice to meet you.” Oh, yeah, we bet you were ready for that. Well, you may be ready, but then you may be surprised to learn that you won’t hear that phrase very often. “Hello. It’s nice to meet you” is okay for first-time introductions, but when friends meet socially, the conversation will probably sound more like this: ALAN: Hey, Lia! It’s good to see you.
LIA: You, too. I haven’t seen you in a few days. How are you? How’s it going?
ALAN: Not bad. I’m so busy with the classes I’m taking. How about you?
LIA: I’m okay. I know you’re busy with classes. My job’s really hectic this time of year, too. What’s new with you?
ALAN: Nothing much. I’m on my way to the mall. I need some time off! Do you remember Lana? She’s there. Ha! She’s always at the mall! I think a lot of our friends plan to just hang out at the mall tonight.
LIA: Who? Oh yeah. I remember Lana. She’s the one with the scary-looking dog. I don’t want to hang out with that dog!
ALAN: Ha! You aren’t afraid of that little tiny dog, are you? Well, I’m sure Rover isn’t at the mall.
LIA: Actually, I’m headed to the mall later, anyway. There’s a huge sale going on. I think they’re open extra late.
ALAN: Great! Maybe I’ll see you there.
LIA: Sounds good. We’re both good shoppers! If I get there before you leave, maybe I’ll see you. After all, we aren’t leaving until we see all the sales. And I’m not leaving until I have some cute new shoes!

Good Resource

This book is great for our students. Although they get grammar and vocabulary practice in class, the dialogues are very good at putting the language of everyday life into the American cultural context, colloquial speech included. They get better exposure to English as they will actually hear it. The CD lets them listen to the dialogues at home to practice their listening skills. Although we've just started using the book, I'm pleased with how it's going. I'm looking forward to progressing through it in the coming months.

I view this book as more of a supplemental resource for our students since it assumes a working knowledge of basic English. That working knowledge is what our classes are developing. It would not be appropriate for true beginners. After three semesters of our once-a-week class, I find our students are ready to start with the book, albeit moving slowly at first.

If you are working with English learners at an intermediate level, I would recommend you take a look at this book. Whether or not you use it as your primary resource, I think you'll find it's useful.

Overall, it's a good value considering it includes the CD with the book.

Excellent learning tool!

English the American Way is exactly what the subtitle promises: a FUN ESL guide to Language and Culture in the U.S. The authors clearly enjoy their subject matter, and their classes must be excellent as well. The dialogues are witty and in real-life language, designed to smooth out bumpy areas in daily discourse. I work at a parish church that is 50/50 English/Spanish, where children are embracing English rapidly, but sometimes are called upon to interpret for their parents. This book would be a great tool for families as well as classes--the dialogues won't sound forced to the kids, and the families can have fun together improving their grasp of idiomatic American English. Many of the Spanish-speaking adults I work with are unsure of themselves in English (though their English is always far better than my Spanish!), and have trouble finding time for classes. This book would be a great resource for people to start to learn on their own, and have a really good time doing it. I also appreciate the effort taken to explain certain idioms and structures (why "I'll" is pronounced eye-ll and not ill, for example; or why "hanging around" doesn't literally mean hanging from rafters)--it's given me a greater love for my own native tongue (and a real sense of its complexity for those coming to the language for the first time). I love this book, and am recommending it to people in my parish and in the social service agencies around town. It's a real gift to the ESL canon!

This is perfect book to learn everyday English.

I purchased this to study and tutor my student.(I'm not from U.S) After I came to U.S, I had a real hard time to learn about the culture, idioms or phrases that are used in everyday conversations. This book has not only useful dialogue examples, but also tons of tips and information that will help people who just moved to US. I only wish this book came out early when I was trying to understand and adapt myself to the culture.. Hopefully other students will learn fast with this book, so they can survive in the new country with less suffering. :P
