Really Good!

Belinda Williams has authored another fun and passionate novel with Modern Heart, the third book from her City Love series. It is a compelling read, replete with a creative story-line, well-defined characters and a complicated romance. This story takes place in the land down under, specifically Sydney, and it gives off a Sex and the City type vibe.
Thirty-year-old Scarlett Wong is an artist, painter and advertising hotshot. As a child of Chinese parents, her artistic talents were stifled while growing up, and meaty subjects like math and science were enforced, with no room for compromise. As a result, Scarlett's relationship with her parents is almost non-existent and she likes to be in control at all times. With the exception of her three best friends, she is a loner, and she has never been in love. One or two-night stands are her specialty. When Scarlett is not working, she is creating modern portraiture, and thanks to a friend of a friend, she is finally getting to show her work in a renowned gallery in New York City.
Twenty-five-year-old John Hart is an architect and semi-professional surfer. About a year ago, he and Scarlett met through a friend at one of Scarlett's gallery openings. John has since lusted after Scarlett and finds her tough as nails persona to be endearing. They share an attraction and overtime, John is able to break down some of Scarlett's barriers in order for her to experience true love. He has her best interests at heart and is the light to her shade.
I truly liked this story, however I would have enjoyed it even more with a little more romance and steam between Scarlett and John. Scarlett's mother is a selfish, yet intriguing character, and I continued to dislike her even when she finally took some interest in Scarlett's art career. I just could not forgive her for her misguided actions during Scarlett's childhood. I loved Scarlett's friends, and the combination of their never ending support and meaningful advice. Believe it or not, Scarlett has a wild-side and she is known to use some form of nudity in order to get her point across. In a nutshell, if you enjoy a novel with a courageous heroine, an incredible group of caring friends, and a hero that just won't give up, then spend sometime in Oz with Modern Heat.

5 emotionally invested even when the other one isn't stars.

I read The Pitch and was immediately in love with Belinda Williams's writing. John and Scarlett both meet during The Pitch and their story really starts during it but Modern Heart really fleshes out their story. This novel really picks apart Scarlett allowing the reader to finally understand why she's so distant, prickly, and anti-emotions.
Scarlett is the only child of Asian immigrants which means she had a lot of pressure to be perfect and successful. The outcome of such standards allowed for Scarlett to not have the emotional support growing up that children need to thrive. Her creative abilities and artistic skills were shunned and seen as useless.
John is mixed with an Australian father and Asian mother. He had a very different upbringing as he was not an only child and his parents were very supportive and affectionate. John is nurturing, caring, compassionate, intelligent, and successful. He knew he wanted Scarlett from the moment he met her but all she did was brush him off and keep him at a distance.
They say persistence pays off and it couldn't be more true in this case. Scarlett begins to wear down and not only realizes she's attracted to John but that he's a really good guy. John melts the ice fortress Scarlett has built around herself since she was 18. John makes her better while Scarlett keeps him on his toes. The two may not seem like a good pair at first but once the real Scarlett comes out it is obvious she is a great choice for John.

An enjoyable read.

This book brought back some memories of my childhood. My mom wasn't as extreme as Scarlett's but there were expectations. I did eventually understand where my parents were coming from when I got older but as a kid, it was hard. I love both Scarlett and Jack. Some people might not care for Scarlett but I understood her and loved her in spite of her personality. ARC provided by NetGalley for an honest review.
