Review
"This is the best guide to learning how to listen. It's an outstanding book in every way, well written, and full of great ideas. "--Elliott Cheney, University of Utah
"Take Note turns the conventional music appreciation book on its head--to invigorating effect. Gone is the old "music history lite" approach, and in its place is an invitation to listen deeply and interactively. By guiding students through a varied and attractive musical repertory, the author challenges them to open their ears to how music expresses profound meanings. The result is the skill of attentive listening, one that will enrich the experience of all kinds of music for a lifetime."--Larry Hamberlin, Middlebury College

Take Note
By Z. M. Ridgway
"Take Note" is a new development in music appreciation textbooks. Most older courses were aimed at college students who were not music majors but who had had private music lessons for years. These books assumed a spectrum of knowledge that these students would have acquired through their years of training, but more importantly they assumed that students had already acquired the skill of listening.
"Take Note" is aimed at the college non-music major who needs to be taught to listen in a focused and intelligent way. The music is presented and re-presented cyclically through the text, with different aspects of it discussed each time (cf. Jerome Brunet's spiral of learning) and reinforced; graphs correlate to the music in real time to provide a visual aid to a student's listening.
The textbook is by a well-known musicologist who has for many years been teaching students of all levels to love and understand music.

Not Your Typical Music Textbook
By Gravid
Easily the most readily understood general music textbook that I've ever run across and/or used in my classes, both university and high school. Not only did it help light a fire in many of my students, but it also rekindled my personal interest in the music and overall culture of both the Medieval and Modern periods, each of which is a very hard sell to a reformed and admittedly Romantic tuba player. In 20 years of teaching, I have yet to come across a better combination of representative tunes and clear relevant commentary. This textbook brings music to life!
