In my view the best mid/advanced level WP book written to date

Let me preface this review by saying this is NOT a beginner Wordpress book. That said, the folks who leave a mediocre review for this book due to this being over their head are ridiculous. If your looking for a book that teaches you "how to get started" with wordpress this is not your book. You will NOT find sections on how to create a post, add tags, install plugins, etcetera. This book is to teach you how to do advanced secure installs, understand the wordpress framework, template tags (the code snippets that make things work), how to create themes and plugins, and start working with some examples.

This book was an amazing for me because of where I am at in my wordpress development. Before reading this book I knew how to install wordpress, set up permalinks, work with .htaccess files, create posts, add plugins, and even do some minor tweaking. I did not however understand the core code concepts of wordpress that make it work, thus I could not advance beyond an "advanced beginner." When I would go to read advanced wordpress books they were all written in techie speak and I always ended up feeling lost.

Enter Smashing Wordpress:

From the moment I started reading this book it was right at the level I needed. I had finished my knowledge of the beginner to mid level stages of wordpress and Smashing Wordpress took me to a solid level of advanced wordpress techniques and theme/plugin building. It is written in PLAIN ENGLISH and not techie speak like most advanced technology books (please remember you must have a solid beginner level understanding or this book will seem complicated).

If your looking to start understanding all that code that makes themes and plugins work and you have a solid understanding of the basics of wordpress this book is for you.

From the very first chapter this book I stated to absorb the wordpress code concepts and advanced techniques I was craving to learn. I am half way through this book and I am quickly becoming the advanced wordpress theme creator that I have been wanting to be. (This book will also give you a solid ability to modify even the most advanced themes)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO WORDPRESS USERS READY TO UNDERSTAND AND BUILD OR MODIFY WORDPRESS THEME AND PLUGINS.

Spectacular Content/Poor Book Design

I am fairly new to web design and wordpress theme development and have been searching for ways to go beyond the typical wordpress theme. This book gives you exactly what it says it will. It really does go beyond the blog. This is by far the most thorough wordpress themeing book I have found. The content within this book is dense and every bit of it is useful.

I would not recommend this book to the absolute beginner unless you really like jumping headfirst into the very deep end. You really need to have at least a moderate understanding of html css and php to get through this book. The author is able able to cover as much as he does in large part by assuming you can keep up.

The biggest problem with this book and the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is the layout. I have heard this complaint regarding other books from smashing magazine and unfortunately it is very true. The guys at smashing mag are brilliant web designers but would do well to hire some equally brilliant print designers to layout their books. The biggest problem is the inner margins of the book. They have been designed as though this book were to be read on a vertical blog with identical margins on both pages instead of reflected margins resulting in having to force the book open to read the left page. Sorry to go on about this but it really is a big problem and I hope they will fix this in future versions (or at least in future publications).

Pros:
1. Spectacular content not found in any other single book
2. Covers up and coming wordpress features such as child themes
3. Tutorials for designing functioning job boards, faq knowledge bases, e-commerce sites, portfolio sites and more
4. 2 chapters on functions.php and plugin development
5. Too many great things content wise to list!

Cons:
1. Not recommended for the beginner
2. Layout of the book is quite poor and makes reading difficult

Overall:
If you are serious about creating your own wordpress themes and have experience with css html and php then this is absolutely the book you want.

A spectacularly bad book

OK. I'm not a wordpress beginner; I'm not a computer newbie. I have installed, configured and developed with wordpress as a CMS professionally and installed it to run blogs. I have a higher degree in computer science. I say this because I want to be absolutely clear that this book is bad for anyone at any level.

The book is badly written. It makes no attempt at all to introduce things in an orderly way. I had a more confident grasp of themes *before* I read the chapters on themes than after! Terminology is not regularly explained and where it is the explanations are sometimes of a vague, kind of, sort of like this variety and then the author moves swiftly on.

Instructions are often incomplete. This is a problem because the *context* is not made clear. You can tell me to finish off some settings without being very explicit *if* you've made it clear *where* those are to be found. If you don't then it's just frustrating.

There is no progressive nature either overall or in individual topics. You jump in and jump around and if you persevere you may just make it back to sure.

This book has no use to a beginner and no use to anyone more advanced. This isn't because it tackles intermediate or advanced topics but because it's written by someone who has little idea of instructional writing and no talent for clarity of exposition. If you are a beginner I'd go with Wordpress Complete or Headfirst Wordpress and if you're after something more advanced then the Wrox design and develop book.

Teich uses insights from his personal and clinical experience and from the growing body of literature in transgender studies to educate the professional and lay communities on the many layered meanings and manifestations of transgenderism. This comprehensive introduction informs without being self-absorbed or polemical.

Nicholas M. Teich is a licensed social worker pursuing a Ph.D. in social policy at Brandeis University. A member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, he trains and educates groups about gender issues and is the founder and president of Camp Aranu'tiq, the first-ever summer camp for transgender children.

Not fully representative of the diversity of transgender identity: Transsexual does not equal transgender

I was dismayed and deeply disappointed to discover that a book named "Transgender 101" should in fact be called "Transsexual 101." This book had the potential to be the new go-to education source on transgender identity, but instead it joins a time-honored tradition of treating transsexual identity as the only truly valid transgender form.

If you read this book, I strongly urge you to do additional reading on the experiences and needs of non-transsexual transgender people, such as genderqueer folks.

As someone who does transgender education work myself, I firmly believe this field has progressed to a point where we can finally have nuanced conversations about the varying ways that people identify, experience, and express their gender. There is no excuse for a text that covers such wonderfully broad ground and important topics to not integrate the incredible diversity of gendered experience into its entirety, rather than relegating "cross-dressers, genderqueer people, drag queens, and other lesser-known types of transgenderism" to its final chapter.

As if it wasn't bad enough to basically treat non-transsexual transgender people as a footnote, Teich adds insult to injury by portraying such folks flippantly (for example, using an insulting Kleenex analogy in chapter 1). The message is clear: the real transgender people are transsexuals.

Results of NGLTF's national transgender discrimination survey show that a third of all transgender people identify as gender variant or gender nonconforming, and almost a quarter identify as genderqueer. Genderqueer people were more likely to have experienced physical or sexual assault, to be uncomfortable seeking police assistance, and to have put off medical care due to fear of discrimination. It's time to start respecting this segment of the transgender population and speak to our experiences and needs. Nick Teich, unfortunately, has set the field back.

Finally a true Transgender 101 book!

The title of this book says it all. Whether you are transgendered, a student of human sexuality and gender identity, or have a loved one who is transgendered and wish to understand them fully, this book is an extremely easy and informative read on the subject of transgender people and transsexuality. Transgender 101 includes basic definitions regarding the transgender community, the transitioning process, coming out to family friends and the general public, a history of transgender's and transsexuals in past and present societies as well as the history of transgender standards of care, the controversial issue in the mental disorder vs. medical condition, discrimination and hate crimes against the transgender community, and lesser known varieties of transgender individuals; this book has introductions to all the basic topics surrounding transgender people. Transgender 101 is a great first read for anyone interested in gaining knowledge about possibly the most misunderstood community in modern society. Like I said, this book should be used as an introductory read only, for more detail about transgender's additional reading is definitely required, but Nicholas Teich has done an outstandingly terrific job on introducing transgender's to the world in "Transgender 101: A Simple Guide To A Complex Issue".

An excellent, easily accessible resource for reading and sharing

Nicholas Teich's Transgender 101: A Simple Guide to a Complex Issue is one of those rare pieces of non-fiction that works equally well in educating (and entertaining) both within and outside the community it explores.

First of all, it's an absolutely excellent resource to share with friends, family, and coworkers whose only exposure to transgender issues or themes has been through the likes of Jerry Springer or RuPaul's Drag Race. Nicholas begins each chapter by asking broad, sweeping questions about identity, expression, and society that immediately involve the reader in the discussion. Once he has them hooked, he slowly narrows the scope of his answers, easing readers into understanding the relevant definitions in such a way that it feels they arrived there of their own accord. He's not preachy or overbearing, and wisely shies away from absolutes - instead, he presents suggestions and conclusions, but leaves interpretation open to the reader.

Along the way, Nicholas offers a series of small, simple, easy-to-understand graphs and tables that help readers to visualise the concepts he's talking about. I was immediately struck by how effectively they compliment the text, flowing naturally from his words, as opposed to jumping out at you like the high-brow, statistical monstrosities of a more scholarly tome. He's also generous with his cartoons, using them to further engage the reader by making light of the prejudices and stereotypes those of in the community face every day. They're the kind of two-or-three panel cartoons that make you chuckle, stop yourself short, rethink what's actually been said, and then come away with a comfortable smile.

As I said earlier, this is also a fascinating read for those of us within the community, effectively raising questions and prompting discussion about assumptions we've always taken for granted, but have never really thought through. He manages to challenge the most deeply held personal beliefs in such a way that you don't feel confronted, but instead welcome the chance to give the issue some thought. I'm a bit of a hoarder, one who likes her books to sit on the shelf well-read by looking unread. Having said that, my copy is proudly dog-eared and underlined throughout with passages that struck me as either inspirational or challenging.

At just under 150 pages (with the last 25 comprising a glossary, index, and appendices), it's a quick, inviting read that won't raise eyebrows or induce sighs of exasperation when you share it with friends. It's a book that' definitely more gift and less burden, and one that I fully intend to leave on my coffee table, not just to prompt discussion or educate guests, but to keep at-hand for my own personal reflection.

so educatioal and socially relevant

Lawson proves that his approach is "no nonsense" and that he is not trying just to sell you his book over another book on the subject. He details history and approaches to weaving a story and plot and challenges the writer to create character actions that are not able to be questioned as to why those actions were taken. His approach to presenting the social necessity prompting actions that change the lives not only of characters but the world around them is quite informative. Learning that the obligatory scene is not the climax and that what authors choose for the climax usually is not supported by adequate causes for such actions taken is priceless for a developing writer.
I continue to read the book over and over again and always get new insights into the craft of playwriting.

required reading for playwrights and screenwriters

I've never understood why this book isn't more well-known. Lawson was a gifted dramatist, and his Theory and Technique of Playwriting contains a great deal of invaluable, detailed nuts-and-bolts information about the craft that screenwriters and playwrights won't find anywhere else. It may not be a breezy read, but it's every bit as worthwhile as titles by Egri, Field, and others.

I remembered seeing this slim red book in my mother's Czech-American kitchen and just had to get a copy for myself - after all, it's the source of our favorite childhood treat, Czechoslovakian Sugar Cookies (p.55)! Rich and buttery with a slick coating of confectioners sugar, these cookies aren't like anything else - and you won't find the recipe anywhere else, either!

In addition to containing recipes for such classic dishes as Czech Sauerkraut, Liver Dumpling Soup, Bohemian Rye Bread, Kolache and all manner of poppy-seed desserts, the book also includes short sections on Czech history and traditions. Published in 1981, much of the historical information is now vastly out-of-date, but it still provides an interesting look at Czech and Slovak culture - particularly from the perspective of Czech immigrants to the United States (complier Pat Martin is credited as the 'coordinator of the Czech village Association of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, so there's a definite mid-Western emphasis).

The book contains a few color photos and several black and white pictures and illustrations.

Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair or dispose of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants be certified in proper refrigerant handling techniques.

The EPA has also placed a sales restriction on refrigerants, limiting the sale of regulated refrigerants to certified technicians only.

Technicians who violate the Clean Air Act provisions by be fined, lose their certification, and may be required to appear in Federal court.

Pretty good, but

NOT everything you need to know. While I did pass the test for all three sections and core (i.e. Universal), I would say this book is really only 85% what you need. It is absolutely worth buying, but they need to focus more on the vacuum levels that need to be achieved. The actual dates were not tested such that you were quizzed what date any particular restriction went into effect. At least not on my test... Though the test did have some dates. I would have given this four (4) stars being it is worth 85%, but it claims to EVERYTHING (i.e. claims 100%) Hence, I reduced 1 star because this is incomplete, and the other star for misrepresentation.

I have not taken the HVAC exam yet, but I'm confident that by purchasing this study guide I will be most prepaired. I was very impressed with the book. No complaints here

Book needs more information, this is a good quick study guide. Be sure to practice all the questions when you good epa 608 practice test.
