About the Author

Ed Hooks has a 30 year acting career on stage and screen, and runs acting classes and acting for animators classes in the US, Europe and Asia. He has taught at over 50 companies and institutions, including Electronic Arts, Walt Disney Studios, Valve, Blizzard and 7 consecutive years at Swansea Institute (SAND).

Great Stuff

I am an animation student beginning my study of acting. This book has proved invaluable. It takes you through step by step how to act out a scene (showing the difference between live acting and animated acting when possible). It briefly touches on the Laban acting method which I had never heard before and tells you just enough to let you know you don't know anything about it. The CD accompanying the book shows some video samples of Laban which seemed pretty obvious and unnecessary. It didn't take away from the book. Just didn't add anything for me.

I've heard from so many animators that complain they weren't taught acting. This book is as close to an acting workshop as you'll ever get.

biased review since I attended the author's lecture on the subject

Ed Hooks is a wonderful guy that really knows his stuff when it comes to this particular field of study. His lecture basically covers his book but is worth hearing him tell stories about the studios he's visited and the people he meets. For a deep dive, I recommend students to follow up his book with a book on body language that law enforcement use. I forget the name but it's here on Amazon as well.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CHARACTER

This book is very important for who is just starting or for who is already in business for awhile.
Sometimes we're worried too much with body mechanics, arcs, timing, etc.. and we forget about the most important, THE CHARACTER! The character and telling the story are the reason of animating after all, your animation must work accordingly. The books helped me a lot with mindset to approach it wisely.

"HIS COVERS ARE SO GOOD, IT'S CRIMINAL!" - Selina Kyle

With praises from Wonder Woman, Catwoman and almost Theodore Roosevelt, how can this book be bad?

This 208-page hardcover is filled with beautiful illustrations, each reprinted full page on low gloss paper. Nice. Additionally, there are also pencil sketches and layout that look and feel as good. And every cover comes with insightful commentary from Adam Hughes, so you can find out which is his favourite cover or who's his disliked superhero. Besides the paintings, there are also pictures of figurines and other merchandise created for these characters. Cool.

The main characters for this art book are Wonder Woman and Catwoman, occasionally other superheroes from DC (and only DC) as well. The paintings are gorgeous and glorious. The colours, stylized rendering, glow, and the looks on the faces are all so alluring.

My favourite, among other favourites, is the mugshot of Catwoman, with tears mixed with eye shadow streaming down her cheeks. I like the fact that each cover reveals a bit of the personality and story subtly.

Cover Run is a wonderful collection of quality covers.

Highly recommended to fans, collectors and artists.

Curse you, Adam Hughes!

Adam Hughes is a better artist than you. Adam Hughes is a better artist than me. Adam Hughes is depressingly, embarrassingly good, and he's making everyone else look bad.

Adam Hughes must be stopped.

So don't any of you buy this book! If you buy this book, Adam Hughes might know how good he is. He might keep drawing, and he might even, (through some dastardly witchcraft,) become EVEN BETTER. And then I might have to kill myself. So don't any of you buy this book!

Since none of you will be buying this book, because I told you not to... I'll let you know what you're missing.

The first 25 pages showcase some of Hughes' earlier work, from the late `80s to early `90s. The largest section of the book, at about 75 pages, is dedicated to his Wonder Woman covers. Then there're about 50 pages of Catwoman covers, followed by 50-ish pages of miscellany (some Superman/fam, Rose & Thorn, Gen13, JLA, Teen Titans, Power Girl, and Batwoman). This is interspersed with a few double-page spotlights on his merchandise-design work (busts, statues, and posters/t-shirts). All sections include sketches, preliminary thumbnails, and commentary, so you get an idea of how the artist works.

This is not a complete sampling of Hughes' work: as the title indicates, only the stuff he's done for DC is represented here. So unfortunately, that means no Tomb Raider, no Red Sonja, no Star Wars, no Marvel characters. The book can't really be faulted for this: it delivers exactly what's promised on the cover. But here's hoping Hughes' will get the chance to publish more collections.

I mean..! Curse you, Adam Hughes!

About the Author
In 2006, Ian N. J. Culbard surpassed thousands of other writers and had his work published in Dark Horse Comics' New Recruits anthology. He has since appeared in the anthology series Dark Horse Presents, Judge Dredd Magazine, and 2000 AD. Culbard is an acclaimed animation director. This is the third full-length graphic novel for which he has created the art, having previously collaborated on The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Hound of the Baskervilles with Ian Edginton.

Great Treatment of Great Stories!

I have read this story many times. I wanted to see what a graphic novel treatment would look like.

It looks great. It perfectly captures the feel of turn-of-last-century Exploration, when Europeans and Americans went traipsing all over the globe.

It weaves all of Lovecraft's elements of the Old Ones, the dread Necronomicon, and the rest of his mythos together.

IF this is your first time with these story, you're lucky!

Pretty good adptation, OK art

Selfmadehero is an independent small press from the UK devoted to producing high quality graphic novels, including in printed form. They have been at it since 2007 but they just crossed my radar with the adaptation of At the Mountians of Madness by INJ Culbard. For those of us who are mythos fans there is more good stuff ahead, as they plan to publish some adaptations of HPL's other works including The Dunwich Horror in 2011. Mr. Culbard's website gives some samples of his work. I ordered my copy from the UK direct from the publisher; delivery over the Christmas rush was about 8 weeks. The production is certainly high quality, with an atmospheric cover and excellent colors.

Regarding this adptation, well, I really wish I liked it better. I found it to be just OK. My up front bias is that after years of familiarity with HP, ATMOM is my favorite story. The problem is parts of it are hard to adapt visually. I mean, how did the protagonist actually figure out with the Elder Things' pictographs actually meant? It sort of strains credulity in the novella and here, well how do you depict that in a comic? It makes me wonder what Guillermo Del Toro is going to do. And what is he going to do with tekeli-li. Mostly my impression was that the rest of the adaptation was decent. I am not familiar with any other graphic novel versions of the story and Mr. Culbard's effort is estimable enough; most artists would rather take on a shorter, less problematic or juicier tale so kudos for assailing the heights on his first Lovecraftian book. So what were the best parts? The drawings of mountains and machinery, ships and airplanes were all very well done. The atmospheric effect of the way the mountains were presented was a strong point. The Elder Thing and the autopsy were excellent. The crowning glory, however, was when the plane carrying Dyer and Danfort crested the mountain range to reveal the ancient remains of the city. On the other hand, I wasn't too taken with the drawing of people and I didn't find the shoggoth particularly horrific.

There is really no competition for the book; if you want a graphic novel adptation of ATMOM, this is the only one. It is not very expensive and offers a pleasant chance to while away a winter evening (it was snowing outside while I read my copy). You don't absolutely need to read HPL's novella first, although it helps (and you can get it online for free). I think most fans will enjoy it. I certainly did, although I wished for better art. It ranks about with the books Worlds of HP Lovecraft from Transfuzion. I like the art of Richard Corben in Haunt of Horror: Lovecraft a bit better. I look forward to Selfmadehero's next Lovecraft book.

Great Quality Full Color Graphic Novel Adaptation

This is a very well done graphic novel adaptation of the famous Lovecraft novel. The book has forwards and more information about Lovecraft and the novel which was useful to read: I've not read Lovecraft books and instead picked this up because of the graphic novel format.

The quality of the book is obvious: beautiful full color illustrations on thick quality matte (not glossy) paper. The illustrations themselves are in the style of the period in which the book was written: 1930s cartoony (more like the loose Dick Tracy/Popeye art rather than more intricate serialized comics art of Flash Gordon). Those looking for horror/horrific artwork should look elsewhere: this is a literary adaptation and not a horror art. I personally really appreciated and respected that the art work echoed the spirit/era of the book rather than being a modern reinterpretation completely with overlybuilt muscular young men with long hair.

Since I had never read Lovecraft, I did not come into the story knowing it in advance. And admittedly, I was completely puzzled by the end of the book over what had happened. I think there were too many concepts that simply could not be drawn and were solely meant for the imagination of the book reader. I don't fault that at the artist: in fact, I think he did a decent enough job of covering the story. But as such, I appreciated the book once more once I read up on the story elsewhere.

In all, I was very pleased with the book. It is well drawn and does a decent job of conveying a very difficult storyline. I also really like that the book respects the spirit and feel of when the book was written: the 1930s.

The best choice for Minecraft diaries

Longtime chef Bill Wavrin, known for stunning his guests with his expertise, lets his love of Southwestern cuisine show through in his (mostly) simple recipes. Orange-Corn Muffins and the Rancho La Puerta Granola have been satisfying guests after the strenuous morning hike for years. Dishes such as Mango Tomatilla Salsa, Broccoli Soup, Curried Rice Salad with Fruit, Banana-Oatmeal Cookies, and Blueberry Cheesecake will make you feel like you're indulging, but won't cost you more than 120 calories per serving. In between the chapters, Wavrin offers cooking tips (how to eat a mango; how to identify and prepare various chilies) and soothing ways to "take the ranch home" with you, including stretches and other fitness tips. If you can't get to Baja, this book is the next best thing.

Executive chef of this 58-year-old oasis in Baja, Mexico, not far from the California border, Wavrin has created an inspired panoply of spa cuisine, designed to keep daily fat levels below 18%. While he has six acres of organic vegetables to draw from, anyone can apply his tantalizing approaches to food likely to satisfy even those who are skeptical of low-fat dishes. Employing chiles, herbs and spices to energize flavors, Wavrin also assembles components that marry intriguingly. Soups are especially imaginative. Yellow Jubilee Tomato-Mint Soup is served either hot or cold. Appetizers include Thai Spring Rolls, which, filled with nine highly seasoned chopped and sliced vegetables, are baked, not fried. Salads can be warm (Sesame Broccoli Stir-Fry Salad; Warm Red Cabbage Salad with Sprouts and Green Beans) or cold (Lentil and Sun-Dried Tomato Salad). Blue Cheese Pepper Dressing features yogurt flavored with feta and blue cheese. Caesar Dressing leaves in the anchovies but replaces egg and oil with buttermilk. Entrees include sauteed rather than fried Chiles Rellenos, Classic Spa Lasagne slimmed down with a filling of vegetables, crumbled tofu and nonfat cottage cheese, and Chile Pasta with Arugula and Coriander. Blueberry Cheesecake has a baked graham cracker crust and a yogurt and ricotta filling firmed with gelatin. Wavrin's recipes are not complicated and most of the prep time will go into chopping.

Rancho La Puerto, in Baja, Mexico, is the sister spa of the well-known Golden Door Spa. Although Wavrin, the chef, says he does serve fish several times a week at the "fitness resort," the low-fat, low-calorie, low-sodium recipes here are all vegetarian, with an emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables (the spa has a huge kitchen garden). Although some of the ingredients lists are long, the majority of the recipes are relatively uncomplicated; each, of course, includes detailed nutritional analysis. Recommended for larger cookbook collections and where Michel Stroot's The Golden Door Cookbook (LJ 9/1/97) has been popular.

OK, but a little *too* low-fat

There's a point at which reducing fat in recipes becomes a little absurd, and they've reached that point in this book. In spite of having many flavorful ingredients like chiles, garlic, and fresh herbs, the recipes I've tried so far somehow still seem bland. Also, texture can suffer when you completely eliminate all fat. The Chile Cheese Pie, for example, has a texture that's like... well, egg whites mixed with cottage cheese (the primary ingredients). So even though the flavor is good, it's not satisfying. I'll still use this cookbook, but it'll never be a staple.

Elegant, if slightly bland, healthy vegetarian fare

The recipes in this book definitely lean toward the elegant side. It's hard to go wrong with something like Curried Mango-Peanut Yogurt Dip or Carrot-Ginger Salad with Pineapple. The recipes tend toward the exotic and the healthful, including things like Vegetable Barley Soup, Garden Sweet Breakfast Bread, Chinese Dumplings with Chives and Ginger, and Mango Tomatillo Salsa. This book stresses fresh vegetables and salads, and the recipes tend to be fairly light fare in general. You probably won't get a lot of use out of this cookbook if your grocery store doesn't carry good produce; plan these recipes for just after your grocery shopping so that produce is in the best possible condition.
There are some ingredients that might be a little difficult to find depending on where you live. I have trouble finding tomatillos, for example. Most ingredients are fairly common, however. The book's layout is fantastic. Commentary is very easy to tell apart from ingredients are very easy to tell apart from instructions, and instructions are nicely numbered.
While many of the tastes are a touch exotic, to my taste buds they don't take things far enough sometimes and end up tasting a bit bland. Of course I love strong flavors, so to some people this may be a plus; you can always adjust seasoning to taste if you want more flavor. These recipes are vegetarian but not vegan--you will find dairy and eggs in here.
Certainly if you're on a diet this is a fantastic way to serve elegant, impressive dishes that won't pile on the pounds.

A Charming Look at Spa Cooking

After reading this book, I thought how nice it must be to stay at the Rancho La Puerta and eat Bill Wavrin's food. I have made several of the recipes and the results were highly successful, although some of the combinations seemed a little odd in print. Mr. Wavrin likes to use lots of ingredients in his cooking, so it helps to have a well-stocked kitchen, but it is worth the effort. His comments in the book show a sensitive approach to vegetarianism and I was struck by his confession that even experience in Mexican and Nouvelle California cuisine did not really prepare him for meatless cooking. If you can't go to a spa, my advice is to pamper yourself for a weekend, with a good workout, a massage from someone you like, some time in the sauna and two days' worth of cooking from recipes in this book, with the best ingredients you can find. The low-fat, low-calorie thing is just a nice bonus.
