Review

"This is the best guide to learning how to listen. It's an outstanding book in every way, well written, and full of great ideas. "--Elliott Cheney, University of Utah

"Take Note turns the conventional music appreciation book on its head--to invigorating effect. Gone is the old "music history lite" approach, and in its place is an invitation to listen deeply and interactively. By guiding students through a varied and attractive musical repertory, the author challenges them to open their ears to how music expresses profound meanings. The result is the skill of attentive listening, one that will enrich the experience of all kinds of music for a lifetime."--Larry Hamberlin, Middlebury College

Take Note
By Z. M. Ridgway
"Take Note" is a new development in music appreciation textbooks. Most older courses were aimed at college students who were not music majors but who had had private music lessons for years. These books assumed a spectrum of knowledge that these students would have acquired through their years of training, but more importantly they assumed that students had already acquired the skill of listening.

"Take Note" is aimed at the college non-music major who needs to be taught to listen in a focused and intelligent way. The music is presented and re-presented cyclically through the text, with different aspects of it discussed each time (cf. Jerome Brunet's spiral of learning) and reinforced; graphs correlate to the music in real time to provide a visual aid to a student's listening.

The textbook is by a well-known musicologist who has for many years been teaching students of all levels to love and understand music.

Not Your Typical Music Textbook
By Gravid
Easily the most readily understood general music textbook that I've ever run across and/or used in my classes, both university and high school. Not only did it help light a fire in many of my students, but it also rekindled my personal interest in the music and overall culture of both the Medieval and Modern periods, each of which is a very hard sell to a reformed and admittedly Romantic tuba player. In 20 years of teaching, I have yet to come across a better combination of representative tunes and clear relevant commentary. This textbook brings music to life!

Strategic Financial Planning over the Lifecycle: A Conceptual Approach to Personal Risk Management, by Narat Charupat, Huaxiong Huang, Pro

This book on personal financial planning and wealth management employs the lifecycle model of financial economics. The central idea of "consumption smoothing" is used to connect chapters and topics such as saving and investment, debt management, risk management, and retirement planning. The first part of the book is nontechnical and aimed at a wide audience with no special technical background. The second part of the book provides a rigorous presentation of the lifecycle model from first principles using the calculus of variations. Lifecycle Finance Zen
By JUAN C. GUTIERREZ B.
I bought this book after studying two of Milevsky's books (The Calculus of Retirement Income, Are You a Stock or a Bond) and I wish I had read it first. It probably makes most sense once you see how it's directly useful to your approach to Personal Financial Planning. After studying the problems included, I still recommend reading it first and then going back to it again once you've dove into the Calculus of Retirement Income Book. It should really be called Lifecycle Finance Zen or something since it's the only Personal Financial Planning book I've seen that takes such an strategic perspective at the problem.

"Your Guide to the National Parks: The complete Guide to All 58 National Parks is quite frankly, amazing." ─ On Wisconsin Magazine

"In short, this is a great, almost encyclopedic, guide to help you prepare for your park visits." ─ Kurt Repanshek (nationalparkstraveler.com)

"Each entry includes location info, what to expect from nature, how to find the park, open seasons, notable attractions, and plenty of full color photography to back the details up. "Your Guide to the National Parks" is a must for nature and vacation collections." ─ Midwest Book Review

"This gem of a travel guide is one of the most comprehensive and well-crafted books of its genre on the market." ─ ForeWord Reviews

"Given the increased interest in national parks since Ken Burns's related PBS series and the upcoming National Park Service centennial in 2016, this is a timely and useful reference. Its bulk, and even its print size, make it a book to use at home or in the library to plan a vacation..." ─ Library Journal

About the Author
Michael Joseph Oswald is an award-winning American travel writer. In 2003 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in electrical engineering and chemistry. The fruit of these endeavors is Michael's debut title: Your Guide to the National Parks.
When Michael is not sleeping in his tent or converted bus, he lives and writes at his parents' hobby farm in northeastern Wisconsin with their dog Scout, cat Magpie, and goat Nellie.

Magnificent! The most complete book available...
By R. Gawlitta
It makes sense that author Michael Joseph Oswald is a UW alumnus (as am I). He really left no stone unturned with his in-depth examination of America's greatest gift, our National Parks. Til now, the best available book was National Geographic Society's wonderful edition, but Mr. Oswald takes it so many steps farther.

I've made my own effort to visit the 58 designated National Parks; I'm at 53, only 5 to go. (I may never make it to American Samoa). I'm 63 years old, and started late. After seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time in '95, I became obsessed with the idea. Nat'l Geo was my guide, to this point. It's quite good, but Oswald's book gives so very much more depth in the realms of camping, hiking, lodging and accessibility, as well as the companies that may be available to guide you into the interiors of these natural wonders.

There's no end of maps and beautiful photographs, and Oswald's insight and comprehensive study provides easy to read details lacking in the other editions.

I can't say enough about the achievement, and can't believe he put it all together at such a young age. My National Park trips have been the highlights of my life; words can't express the excitement of a river rafting trip down the Colorado through the Grand Canyon. I wish I had Mr. Oswald's guide with me during other trips.

Even going online to the NPS website doesn't give you as much insight as Mr. Oswald's book. Highly recommended...MOST highly.

May I add that I'm going back to Alaska in July for Kobuk Valley and Gates of the Arctic (only accessible by plane). After that, I can do "old people" cruises to Glacier Bay and US Virgin Islands...

Great Resource
By parkman
We are taking our 11-year-old grandson to Grand Teton and Yellowstone, so this guide was timely. Our grandson is planning the trip using the guide, and it is perfect. I wanted to know the length and difficulty of the hiking trails, and they are all in there. The "Don't miss" tab on the simple maps are helpful to someone who has limited knowledge of the parks and limited time. The "thumbs up" on certain of the hiking trails saves us a lot of time. The book is simple to follow, easy to refer to while traveling, and thorough. Congratulations to the author!!!

Almost missed out...
By C Marquardt
I have been to a few of our National Parks and early this summer I was planning another trip to Mammoth Cave NP. I decided to purchase this book to help me plan my trip. I thought I had everything all worked out, but thanks to this book I read about the Wild Cave tour and quickly booked it. The tour was amazing (and rugged) and it would not have happened without the recommendation of this book. I am so glad we didn't miss out on the experience. I am looking forward to more trips and seeing what other recommendations this book can bring me, because the first one was unforgettable!

The Myth: Alice was an ordinary girl who stepped through the looking glass and entered a fairy-tale world invented by Lewis Carroll in his famous storybook. The Truth: Wonderland is real. To escape Redd, Alyss and her bodyguard, Hatter Madigan, must flee to our world through the Pool of Tears. But in the pool Alyss and Hatter are separated. Lost and alone in Victorian London, Alyss is befriended by an aspiring author to whom she tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life. Yet he gets the story all wrong. Hatter Madigan knows the truth only too well, and he is searching every corner of our world to find the lost princess and return her to Wonderland so she may battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7–When her parents, the king and queen of Wonderland, are killed by her Aunt Redd, Alyss Heart escapes by jumping into the Pool of Tears. Her jump takes her to Victorian Oxford, where she emerges from a puddle, lives as a street urchin, and is eventually adopted by Reverend and Mrs. Liddell. Unable to make anyone believe her fantastic story, she finally confides in Charles Dodgson, who says he will write a book about her. When she discovers that Alice's Adventures Underground is full of make-believe, and not her story or her real name, she sadly resigns herself to life as a Victorian girl of privilege. Meanwhile, back in Wonderland, the Alyssians form a resistance movement and attempt to overthrow the despotic Redd. For years, Hatter Madigan searches the world for Alyss so she can return to Wonderland as Queen. In the end, the Alyssians prevail, but only after much graphic bloodshed and many brutal battles involving card soldiers who transform into warriors, chessmen, blades that whirl and slash, vicious Jabberwocks, and even carnivorous roses. The tale is clever and flows like an animated film where action is more important than character development. However, it bears little resemblance to Lewis Carroll's original story. Beddor has usurped the characters and setting and changed them for his own purposes, keeping only the story's frame and not much of that. Still, the fantasy will appeal to those readers who like battles and weapons and good vs. evil on and on and on.–Barbara Scotto, Michael Driscoll School, Brookline, MA

From Booklist
Alyss Heart, heir to the Wonderland throne, is forced to flee when her vicious aunt Redd murders her parents, the King and Queen of Hearts. She escapes through the Pool of Tears to Victorian London, but she finds she has no way home. Adopted by the Liddells, who christen her Alice Liddell and disapprove of her wild stories about Wonderland, Alyss begs Charles Dodgson to tell her real story. Even though he writes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, she knows no one believes her. Years go by, with Alice repressing her memories. Then royal bodyguard Hatter Madigan, determined to start a war for Wonderland's throne, crashes her wedding. Beddor offers some intriguing reimaginings of Dodgson's concepts (such as looking-glass travel) and characters (the cat is an assassin with nine lives), but his transformation of Wonderland's lunacy into a workable world sometimes leads to stilted exposition on history, geography, and government. Even so, his attention has, happily, put Wonderland back on the map again. Krista Hutley

Could have been brilliant
By M. Bennett
I was very excited to read this book after I met the author at the Denver Comic Con. He was very witty, charming and fun. I figured if he put any of that into his books, they have to be awesome. Problem was... I didn't really see any of that in this book.
The book is a different take on Wonderland. Supposedly the truth since Lewis Carroll did a more "disneyesque" version of the story the Alyss told him. According to this booK Looking Glass Wars is Alyss's true account.
The premise was good, the storyline was inventive, the execution was okay. My biggest problem with the book was the characters. There was nothing at all that made me like them or hate them. I felt nothing for them. I couldn't care less about what happened to them. I greatly wanted to like them but, alas, I just couldn't.
To me, that is one of the most important things in a book. Without it, who cares if the bad guys win. I know I didn't. I think stronger characterization would have made this quite an enjoyable read. Hopefully there will be improvements in that are but not sure if and when I'll go to the 2nd book.

Remarkably clever, violent, and shallow
By Pop Bop
Bear with me a moment. Pretend that there was never a book titled "Alice in Wonderland". Treat "Looking Glass Wars" as just a stand-alone war/fantasy novel. Well, it's not very good. Characters are shallow, dialogue is leaden, plot is hackneyed. Lot's of beheadings and dismemberment, in a cartoonish sort of way. Each scene is brief and barely established. Weapons just appear out of thin air, characters keep arriving in the nick of time, all of the book's progress is sketchy and thin, almost like the outline of a book in progress. It's just not very satisfying, even as a middle-school type read. (Towards the end, if you just read a sentence or two every other page you'll finish without having missed anything.)

But, the first 50 pages, where the connection is made with the original "Alice in Wonderland", is remarkably clever. The idea that "Alice ..." is a perverted, infantilized version of the true history of a parallel universe Wonderland, is just pure gold. And Beddor does a good job with that, mixing obvious and subtle references to the original "Alice ...".

Unfortunately, after those first pages the connection to "Alice ..." is not further developed, and we are just stuck with the clumsy fantasy/actioner.

So, well worth the effort to pick up a copy to read the beginning, but I'd skim the rest, (at least to pick up a few later riffs, like the stoned caterpillars), and skip the sequels.

Perfect for Sixth Grade Boys.
By William M. Ferriter
This is a fantastic read for anyone looking for a fantasy story about a civil war. Lots of really interesting characters. Lots of really interesting conflicts. Lots of really interesting weapons and fighting scenes.

As a sixth grade teacher, I recommend this to boys who are good readers but reluctant to read because I know they will be hooked by the story and spend time working their way through the rest of the series.

Good start, but some fundamental errors in Part 1 that could confuse novices. Wait for a later printing.
By Pragmatist
I bought my grandson, a college freshman majoring in informatics, this book as a gift: How Computers Work (10th Ed.) by Ron White, First Printing, Dec. 2014. I pre-ordered it from Amazon back in November, 2014, and it did arrive in time for the holidays.

While I applaud the effort and book overall, having owned several editions in the past, there are fundamental errors early in this first printing that could erode reader confidence, since the mistakes are so basic. I imagine this edition was rushed to press prior to the holiday season, and frankly, it shows.

Now I must explain to my grandson the mistakes, and apologize.

Here's just a sample of what I've found so far in Part 1:

1. A table is not a computer, but a tablet such as an iPad is: Page 5, last paragraph: "--mainframe, desktop, table, digital music player, ... " ???

2. P. 13, image 3, 4th sentence is not a sentence and doesn't help the explanation: "Resistance is how the material which the electricity is flowing." ???

3. P. 15, image 5. The image of the rheostat is confusing and makes the opposite point it should. The way it is drawn, it contradicts the text. In fact, as the knob is turned clockwise, the amount of resistance should increase, not decrease as depicted in the image. When the knob in the diagram, as drawn, is turned clockwise, there is MORE resistive wire to travel through. The current out would therefore decrease. And that's just backwards to how knobs on radios and stereos normally work. Turning clockwise will increase the current out, not decrease it. Duh? See: https://www.google.com/search?q=how+does+a+rheostat+work&espv=2&biw=731&bih=387&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=SzKtVI3mOoOnyQTDz4KoBg&ved=0CDAQsAQ&dpr=1.75

4. P. 17, image of Mona Lisa is wrong, contradicts text to the left in section 6: The Mona Lisa appears in COLOR. This is NOT a half-tone image, consisting of only black and white dots. The whole example could be improved by showing a contrast between a half-tone (1-bit color) and, say, a 256-bit color image of Mona Lisa. E.g., see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halftone .

5. P. 36, first paragraph. Pages XXX-xxx are referred to. Where are these pages?

6. I bought the digital edition also, wondering if the same mistakes are there. Yes, they are. Furthermore, the navigation when scrolling was not working correctly in the latest version of Firefox (34.05) for the Mac (OS X 10.10.1). When I use the left navigation menu, click on Chapter 1, How Waves take the Universe on a Joy Ride, then start scrolling down, the page jumps to the beginning of the book! I can't even read it, unless I start scrolling from the beginning of the book. Come on now, this is totally unacceptable.

So I tried Chrome (Version 39.0.2171.95 (64-bit)). While the navigation works, the first Interaction just came up with an empty black box with a yellow border. It just does NOT work at all (but surprisingly it does in Firefox, and I can add ducks to the waves, if I FIRST scroll from the beginning of the book to get there).

7. The interactive animation on Writing Data to RAM (and reading it) is confusing. When getting to Reading data from RAM (in the same interaction), the illustration is simply confusing. How can a capacitor send a current through a transistor that is CLOSED. The circuit is broken between the capacitor and the data line. How can current travel from the capacitor to the data line, if the switch is off? This is not logical. It must be wrong, or I'm missing something here.

Overall, this is NOT a good start to the book, and makes me a doubter of the accuracy of some of the content in this first printing/web edition. I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book to others at this time with errors I've discovered in the first few dozen pages.

I am not a computer novice, having started with programming in FORTRAN on mainframe computers with punched cards. I taught college students how to use computers over 4 decades. More recently, I've written interactive Web simulations, tutorials and tests that are widely used.

My advice: Wait for a later printing when some of these rather basic and embarrassing errors are fixed in the 10th edition.

I am finding errors early in the book
By Brian H. Fiedler
Beautiful illustrations, but I am finding errors. This one is forgivable, in the Introduction to the 10th Edition, page xviii: "...a computer that would return a solution in the form of punch cards". I remember punch cards for input, but not output. On page 17, I am asked to view an image of a two-bit Mona Lisa. But I see a color Mona Lisa. I think the image must be at least 8 bit. Also on page 17, the explanation for multi-bit sampling is not consistent with the Diagrams A and B that are referenced. The same diagrams are referenced a bit more intelligently in the discussion of sampling rate. Are the appropriate diagrams missing? Onward to Chapter 2, but I am disillusioned. Comments are welcome about suspected errors.

Excellent Computer Technology Explanations
By Fred Sabin
I have personally been involved with computers and computer technology since 1960, from huge IBM mainframes and the initial Apple and IBM compatible PCs, to the current host of devices that allow almost everyone instant worldwide communication and access to virtually unlimited information. The evolution of this technology has been mind boggling. My former knowledge and expertise on the leading edge of this field is now lost to newer generations of science, children, and grandchildren. This book explains in simple terms with excellent illustrations the basics of computer technology.

The New Jersey Computer Club, of which I am President, no longer builds, repairs, or programs computers, but tries to assist seniors in learning about, purchasing, and using computer related products. Many only want an inexpensive way to communicate by email or text with others, or to share pictures, or get information, or hear music or watch videos, and/or live in a world with online shopping and banking. But many others want to know why and how everything works. This book answers those basic questions, and introduces the concepts and terminology for further investigation.

It's not a text that you must read cover to cover, getting lost in details along the way. It is a series of short well explained articles that you can peruse in any order that interests you. Today you may want to know about computer components; tomorrow the Internet; or maybe digital cameras or smart-phones. This is a great place to start. It is leisurely reading for everyone, and not a manual on a specific topic. The book title might be better, as “How Computer Technology Works” to differentiate it from prior editions that focused more on just computers.

This book has an excellent selection of diverse topics that are both meaningful and current, especially in this rapidly changing field. Technical data that is soon obsolete is minimal, in favor of technical concepts that are more lasting. Periodic supplemental articles on new technology, or significant changes in existing technology, would be a welcome addition on the Que website for registered owners of this book, as well as a current technology time-line and references listing.

No technical book of this size and complexity is perfect, and there are typos and errata that need correction, but I haven't found any other book that explains so much so well. Another winner for Que and Ron White. Thank you.

Irrational Exuberance 3rd edition, by Robert J. Shiller

In this revised, updated, and expanded edition of his New York Times bestseller, Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Shiller, who warned of both the tech and housing bubbles, cautions that signs of irrational exuberance among investors have only increased since the 2008-9 financial crisis. With high stock and bond prices and the rising cost of housing, the post-subprime boom may well turn out to be another illustration of Shiller's influential argument that psychologically driven volatility is an inherent characteristic of all asset markets. In other words, Irrational Exuberance is as relevant as ever. Previous editions covered the stock and housing markets--and famously predicted their crashes. This edition expands its coverage to include the bond market, so that the book now addresses all of the major investment markets. It also includes updated data throughout, as well as Shiller's 2013 Nobel Prize lecture, which places the book in broader context. In addition to diagnosing the causes of asset bubbles, Irrational Exuberance recommends urgent policy changes to lessen their likelihood and severity--and suggests ways that individuals can decrease their risk before the next bubble bursts. No one whose future depends on a retirement account, a house, or other investments can afford not to read this book.

Review
Robert J. Shiller, Co-Winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Economics
A New York Times Bestseller
Winner of the 2000 Commonfund Prize for the Best Contribution to Endowment Management Research

"Robert J. Shiller . . . has done more than any other economist of his generation to document the less rational aspects of financial markets."--Paul Krugman, New York Times

"Irrational Exuberance is not just a prophecy of doom. . . . [I]t is a serious attempt to explain how speculative bubbles come about and how they sustain themselves."--John Cassidy, New Yorker

"What set off this speculation and what feeds it? Shiller ranges widely his explanations, laying them out in the first 168 pages in easy-to-read, sometimes passionate prose. . . . [T]hose first 168 pages are must reading for anyone with savings invested in stocks."--Louis Uchitelle, New York Times Book Review

"Mr. Shiller's book offers a dose of realism. . . . [I]t presents a message investors would be wise to head: Make sure your portfolio is adequately diversified. Save more and don't count on double-digit gains of the past decades continuing to bail you out during retirement."--Burton G. Malkiel, Wall Street Journal

"Informative and well-argued . . . A calm and reasonable antidote to today's euphoria."--Jeff Madrick, New York Review of Books

"Although its message may be unwelcome to many, this important book should be read by anyone interested in economics or the stock markets."--Rene M. Stulz, Science

"Dazzling, richly textured, provocative . . By far the most important book about the stock market since Jeremy J. Siegel's Stocks for the Long Run."--William Wolman, Business Week

"Shiller has provided an accessible guide to the usually impenetrable literature on financial markets, especially the American stock market."--Foreign Affairs

"Shiller contends that investor psychology is so given to herd behavior that it's almost impossible to manipulate or even influence. The market can 'go through significant mispricing lasting years or even decades.'"--Robert J. Samuelson, Washington Post

"Irrational Exuberance should be compulsory reading for anybody interested in Wall Street or financially exposed to it; at the moment, that would be roughly everybody in the United States."--Economist

"[An] excellent new book. . . . If you want to preserve capital, unload most of your stocks and invest in government bonds."--Steve H. Hanke, Forbes

"Likely to be the year's most-talked-about finance book. . . . You can agree or disagree with it. But you owe it to yourself to read it if you are investing in equities or contemplating doing so."--Fred Barbash, International Herald Tribune

"Irrational Exuberance is likely to cause a stir. . . . Shiller illustrates how the current market is like a naturally occurring Ponzi scheme in which investors become promoters for the game after receiving initial payments with money taken from subsequent investors."--David Henry, USA Today

"Irrational Exuberance is not billed as a personal finance book. But it is. You can agree or disagree with it. But you owe it to yourself to read it if you're investing, or contemplating investing, in inequities."--The Washington Post

"A must-read . . . Refreshing, well-reasoned . . . And very readable."--Michael P. Niemira, Barron's

"So why have share prices soared so high in the past five years, taking market valuations past all historical records? Professor Shiller's answer, as the title indicates, is not encouraging. His message is: diversify now as much as you can, and batten down the hatches."--Diane Coyle, Independent

"Shiller has written a crystal-clear and tough-minded critique."--David Warsh, Boston Globe

"The point of Irrational Exuberance is not to help investors dump their houses before the current exuberance fades. It is to deepen our understanding of the events we are watching as one bubble gives birth to another and to encourage readers to think about economic behavior and economic policies that can cushion the nasty side of volatility."--Sharon Reier, The International Herald Tribune

"The first edition of this book was widely read because of its timing. This one, too, seems perfectly timed, coming when we're starting to fear we've been fooling ourselves. Again. . . . There's a world of important information for everyone."--Lyn Miller, USA Today

"The second edition's new component . . . is Shiller's exploration of how market psychology has responded to the ensuing five years of retrenchment. One chilling conclusion he reaches from his knowledge of past market performance is that the 2005 market may still be correcting and that a return to 2000 levels may be a decade away. He further warns that many investors are still too heavily invested in equities and that proposals to invest Social Security funds in the stock market would subject the retirement system to unacceptable risk. Shiller expands his focus to include the booming real estate market where he sees another speculative bubble building."--Library Journal

"There's plenty of new material in this edition. . . . Chief among the new additions is Shiller's deeper focus on recent excesses in the stock market and his skepticism about investing in real estate. . . . . Shiller's ideas have so many devoted followers that I wouldn't be surprised to see many more editions."--Angele McQuade, BetterInvesting

"Yale University Professor Robert Shiller pretty much called the stock market drop when this book was first published in 2000. In this fact-packed book, Shiller describes the psychological origins of volatility, among other things. And in the newest edition, Shiller compares the recent housing boom to the stock market bubble of the 1990s."--Registered Rep.

"[Shiller] fully updates his argument here, adding new material (a chapter on the bond market, his 2013 Nobel lecture) and augmenting the text to reflect developments since the 2005 second edition. He vacuums up all manner of cultural phenomena, from the important (rising income inequality) to the possibly significant (Google Glass) to the trivial (Kim Kardashian), to reinforce his thesis, and he writes expressively, whether explaining arcane economic issues or illustrating how the story behind Mona Lisa's smile helps account for the painting's astonishing market value. A rare example of economic analysis, deeply respected within the discipline, wholly accessible to general readers."--Kirkus

"A superb, well-written, well-argued contribution for serious scholars and practitioners, whether they agree with Shiller or not."--Choice

"Shiller provides an excellent synthesis of all the evidence contradicting the efficient market hypothesis, especially how a form of irrational exuberance sometimes leads to price bubbles. . . . Without any doubt, Irrational Exuberance must be read by anyone interested in finance. And it really can be read by anyone interested in finance because the genius of this book is to explain complex phenomena easily, avoiding specialist jargon, including mathematics."--David Le Bris, Journal of Economics

Irrationality Redux?
By Great Faulkner's Ghost
This first edition of this book, in 2000, was a broad study, drawing on a wide range of published research and historical evidence, of the enormous stock market boom that started around 1982 and picked up incredible speed after 1995. The book argued that the boom represented a speculative bubble, not grounded in sensible economic fundamentals. The second edition, in 2005, added an analysis of the real estate bubble as similar to the stock market bubble that preceded it, and warned that "Significant further rises in these markets could lead, eventually, to even more significant declines." Alas, both predictions turned out to be true, as we now all know.

Will history repeat itself with this third volume? That is hard to say. In this latest edition, Professor Shiller updates his argument, and augments the text to reflect developments since the 2005 second edition. Of particular interest, he adds an important new chapter on the bond market, which many feel is also in bubble territory. The good news is that, while Professor Shiller says that returns in all asset classes are likely to be subpar for some years given today's elevated asset prices, the mood is less somber than in previous editions, and there are no warnings of imminent doom, as in previous editions. In particular, he does not see a classic "bubble" in bonds, due to the lack of "exuberance" -- prices for bonds are being bid up reluctantly by investors, he says, which is not the formula for a bubble. However, he certainly balances that somewhat comforting news with a realistic view of the risks that the current situation presents to investors and savers of all types, stocks, bonds, housing, and savings accounts. His main piece of advice to all Americans concerned about their financial future may be the most sensible piece of financial advice ever written: spend less, save more! Yes, we all know that, but when the winner of the 2013 Nobel prize says that, it really means something.

I find Professor Shiller's writing style highly enjoyable, not at all like most economics books. The plain-spoken style is smart, wry, and often witty, and there are almost no mathematical formulas, except in the occasional technical notes in back. The book also talks about a lot of factors that are intrinsically interesting to non-economists. For example, it has chapters devoted cultural factors in investing; the effects of the news media; "new era" economic thinking; psychological factors; psychological anchors for the market and herd behavior.

Professor Shiller ends by offering a lot of good, commonsense advice to both policymakers and investors, large and small. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what's behind the current anxiety, turmoil, and hopes, for a brighter financial future for all Americans.

No Easy Answers
By Nick Zealand
The first edition of Irrational Exuberance warned of a stock market bubble. The key takeaway was to diversify. A few months later the dot com bubble crashed and stocks corrected.

The second edition of Irrational Exuberance warned of a housing market bubble. The key takeaway was to diversify. A few years later, the sub-prime crisis hit and both stocks and house prices corrected.

This, the third edition, warns about a number of things. And there seems to be no place to hide. Interest rates on bonds are historically low and unattractive. US stock prices are high. Yet historically speaking, Shiller thinks stocks could continue to rise higher for a while longer. Housing prices have rebounded in the US and are at bubble levels in other countries. The key takeaway seems to be we should hedge risks, and invest in assets that correlate negatively with labor income. The only concrete hedging suggestions from Shiller sadly all come with significant complexity and a heavy time premium.

While it might seem preposterous to state that we are in a bubble so recently after two other bubbles popped, Shiller reassures us that it is perfectly normal for markets to collapse, then recover, only to collapse again shortly thereafter. The example given is the lead up to the great depression.

There is not much new content in the third edition, compared to the excellent previous edition. A new preface, a new chapter on bonds (chapter 2), some additional precipitating factors at the end of chapter four, and a revised call to action in chapter 13.

The chapter on bonds is seven pages long, and mostly highlights what is well known, which is that bonds are currently an unattractive diversification strategy. Shiller states bonds are not technically in a bubble, because they are being so reluctantly purchased. Yet there is still a significant downside risk to holding long term bonds.

Excellent at Providing Historical Perspective, Analyzing Psychological Factors Causing Bubbles but Weak at Providing Solutions
By Yoda
This reviewer remembers having read the first edition of this book back when it first came out in either 1999 or 2000, just before the stock market crash of 2000-2001. It did a very good job at providing historical perspective regarding long-term values in the stock market. It, correctly, pointed out that the stock market was overpriced and that a decline would be reasonable to expect. And so it happened.

Since then, bubbles have also burst in the housing market worldwide as well as the stock markets. In addition, commodity markets have taken on many of the speculative characteristics of equity and housing markets, characteristics that they have not had, at least to the extent of the equity and housing markets, in the past. Bubbles in these markets were not discussed in the first edition of the book. For this reason this reviewer purchased this edition of Dr. Schiller's book - to obtain historical perspective on the housing markets, equity markets since 2000 and commodity prices. The book, in short, provides very good historical perspective on the first two of these (housing and equity markets) but, unfortunately, not too much regarding commodity markets. It discusses long term trends and cyclical bubbles in their historical context. For this reason alone this book should be read by serious investors and students of both economics and finance. As Aristotle once said "A man with no perspective has no value".

In addition to providing historical context in regard to these markets, the book also does an excellent job at explaining, through the lens of economic psychology, why bubbles occur. The primary reason is that there is human interaction, that taken on the aggregate, influences the market as a whole. Factors influencing this psychology, that are discussed in some depth in the book (about a chapter each), include (not all inclusively) the optimism (usually unfounded) induced by new technologies (what Dr. Schiller refers to as "New Era Economic Thinking"), the role of the news media and the de-regionalization and globalization of these markets (housing markets historically were only regional within nations and equity markets, in general, were not global - this has changed since the mid-1990s though). Dr. Schiller does a very good job at showing how these primarily psychological factors have played a very important role in inflating and deflating bubbles. He does an excellent job at showing how these psychological factors have played a more important role that economic "fundamentals", as posited by the "rational expectations" school of macroeconomics and finance, are not able to explain credibly. Not that there are no other books available on the subject. John Auther's, writer for the Financial Times, does an excellent job at analyzing the role of psychological factors in bubbles albeit only those in equity markets (and with the emphasis being on institutional players in these markets) in his "The Fearful Rise of Markets: Global Bubbles, Synchronized Meltdowns, and How To Prevent Them in the Future". Dr. Schiller though drills down into more psychological (numerically) as well as analyzing these in detail. He also provides quite a few analogies that clarify his ideas (i.e., providing context in terms of research that shows how investor psychology very much mimics the spread of diseases).

All and all the book does an excellent job at examining these psychological factors. Where the book somewhat falls short, however, is in the solutions provided (the final chapter of the book). Many of the solutions provided by Dr. Schiller do not seem very capable of reducing the growth of bubbles. For example, he cites the use, by monetary authorities, of "gently" higher interest rates. He also mentions that persons in "responsible" positions point out the existence of bubbles to the public. Both of these, at least to this reviewer, seem particularly weak. Dr. Schiller also, more importantly, posits that hedging and shorting can also play a very important role but, simultaneously, he also points out the weaknesses in these (i.e., the market financial instruments may not exist, shorting itself may raise prices as to do this some investors [i.e., those offering the shorts for sale] must hold the relevant securities and this can have the effect of raising their prices, etc.). These factors greatly reduce the ability of short selling and hedging's ability to mitigate the size of bubbles.

Despite the problems cited in the last paragraph above, the book's historical perspective on equity and housing markets and its serious examination of psychological factors relevant to bubbles make it a very important book to read - especially for serious investors and students of economics and finance.
