Dearest Friend and Reader,

Welcome! I am just thrilled and honored that I get to share this journey with you as you discover your highest level of beauty and health.

I know how confusing it can be to navigate the numerous conflicting and ever-changing health philosophies that are out there. Fruit is healthy. No, fruit has too much sugar! Be sure to count fat grams. No, wait. Make that to count carbs! The conflicting advice used to always make me wonder if I was doing something wrong. What are we supposed to believe, and where do we turn for the answers?

Well, it really doesn't have to be that complicated. The goal of my book is to show you fundamental principles that will teach you how to unlock your highest potential beauty and achieve optimal health. As you'll find, it is actually very simple. And in our ever-progressing, complicated world, simplicity is a beautiful thing. We need not get swept up in the chaos of gimmicky new diets and worry if we are missing out on the Holy Grail of instant weight loss and wrinkle freedom. The truth is, it doesn't exist in the hot new diet. But there is an answer, and the exciting news is that it is right in front of you.

I want you to know right off the bat that this book is not about restriction in any sense. We will not be counting calories or grams of carbs, and we will not be restricted to eating in one particular way to fit into one dietary category. You can discover your ultimate health and beauty whether you are a vegan, vegetarian, raw foodist, pescatarian or omnivore. The broad concepts I outline in this book will work for everyone, and you will see and feel results, whatever your current diet. There is a phase, or eating plan, that works for everyone—regardless of lifestyle, budget or personal tastes.

Once we get rid of restriction and embrace the idea of consuming an abundance of the right foods, we free ourselves up to understand, internalize and apply the true tenets of health and beauty. With just a few simple changes, you will look and feel better than you ever have before. That is my promise to you!

And the best part? You'll have all these benefits without counting calories or obsessing over tiny portion sizes or eating bland microwaved foods! You will be feasting on fresh, delicious and filling foods that will nourish every cell in your body so that a deeply healthful, radiant glow permeates from within. Your skin will become brighter, your hair shinier and your body more toned. Belly fat will drop off, and your eyes will sparkle with newfound energy. You can achieve true health and beauty naturally with food. This diet is that powerful.

I believe the word "health" is synonymous with the word "beauty." A healthy body is a beautiful body. Healthy skin, which is a reflection of our internal health, is beautiful skin. My definition of beauty is that it should be deep, lasting and magnetic, and grow from the inside out. The key to this kind of vibrant beauty is ongoing cleansing. When your cells and blood are clean and detoxified, your body is able to function optimally and you are able to maximize the use of plentiful minerals in your food. Your skin will radiate from the inside out, excess pounds will melt away and your body will achieve its perfect weight. We've all seen the kind of beauty I'm talking about. A woman who just glows. Now you, too, can sparkle with true beauty.

I wrote this book to help free you from wasting time and energy struggling with debilitating new diets and cleanses, wearing layers and layers of concealer and foundation to hide dulled, flawed skin and, yes, squeezing into your "fat" jeans. I promise you that it is possible to achieve your most beautiful self and your perfect weight—while eating abundantly! And once you stop wasting time and energy worrying about your skin and weight, you can focus on your real goals and dreams.

Believe me, I have had my own share of weight and beauty battles. I struggled for years to control my weight as a superthin, calorie- and fat-gram-counting marathon runner. I was always swallowing a gnawing hunger, and at five foot five I was barely one hundred pounds, with hair as coarse as steel wool. Then I went in the totally opposite direction (yes, I admit it!). After graduating from college, I moved to Sydney, Australia, where I landed my first job. For my job, I was mingling with the A-list celebrity crowd, riding yachts and constantly eating out at fancy dinners and, yes, drinking expensive wine and partying.

I was spending all my time involved in activities I thought were so glamorous. Hey, you're relaxing, I told myself. Have another glass. Well, what I thought was healthy food—soy burgers, fat-free milk, pretzels, yogurt, sushi and grilled veggie and mozzarella sandwiches—added over thirty pounds to my small frame! My skin was a dull, zit-covered mess, and I believe that I looked older than I do now. I stopped working out regularly because I just didn't have the energy. Instead I turned to soy milk cappuccinos and Diet Coke to give me periodic "boosts" throughout the day.

When I developed a roll of fat on my once flat-as-a-board belly, I looked in the mirror and decided that I couldn't take it anymore. It was at that point that a new and highly influential person came into my life: an Australian holistic nutritionist who ran a nutritional detox center in Sydney. By chance (since I went so infrequently) I saw a small flyer of hers at the gym.

I had never before tried to do anything remotely detox related, but I was desperate for something to help and decided to give it a shot. This gorgeous, blond forty-something-year-old with sharp green eyes assessed my bumpy skin, my dull hair and the ridges in my nails and gave me a knowing look. She shook her head when she saw the thick coating of mucus on my tongue. The first questions she asked me were, "How often do you go to the bathroom?" and "Do you get bloated and gassy often?"

To which I replied, "What? Who cares about that stuff? I want to lose weight and make my skin look better!"

She smiled. "That stuff is what it is all about, my dear."

I was put on a stern detox program, cutting out dairy and refined carbs, like pretzels and white rice, from my diet immediately. This Aussie guru also made me concoctions for my liver with nineteen medicinal plants, my first introduction to the bounty of herbs in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. She also made her own face and body creams, and she forever changed the way I thought about my skin. She helped me see that the skin is our largest organ and functions like a mirror of what's going on inside the body: it offers us a direct reflection of the health achievements we make and the obstacles with which we struggle. My skin held all the answers, and all I had to do was pay attention to what it was telling me. Likewise, I learned that from 60 to 70 percent of what we put on our skin is absorbed through the skin into our bloodstream and liver. That certainly changed the way I thought of beauty products for good!

She jolted something awake in me and inspired my voracious passion for both natural health and skin care. I stopped partying and going out to dinner parties every night and read all the information and books the nutritionist gave me. I spent a lot of time with her, shopping at health stores, sipping herbal tea, and walking along Bondi Beach, where we both lived, having health discussions for hours. We became very close friends! The more I followed her advice, the better I looked and felt. The weight I'd gained melted off, and my skin started to clear up. I had so much energy that any thought of "needing" a coffee got banished from my mind! The results were incredible.

I knew I had to make a complete break from my current path in life. I didn't want to simply change the way I ate; I wanted to profoundly change the way I lived. Learning about natural health and skin care and the natural healing properties of plants made me jittery inside. I was so excited! Even though I still had no idea how this new interest would fit into my life, I was thrilled about the unknown possibilities. I could no longer ignore the dull ache in my heart telling me that I was on the wrong career path, in a corporate field that was not my real passion. I had found something I was incredibly passionate about: learning more and more about how food itself is medicine and a powerful tool for achieving our highest beauty.

Once I came to realize what I truly wanted, the flame was lit and inspiration shifted into action. I was in a serious long-distance relationship with someone back home, but I knew deep down that it wasn't right. Within one week I quit my job, declined law school for the following fall, broke my apartment lease on Bondi Beach and dumped my boyfriend. There was no turning back now!

I walked into an STA travel office and, with a few thousand dollars saved from working, bought an around-the-world ticket with fifteen stops across five continents. At first I thought I might travel for two or three weeks, but once I started out, I could not stop. The more I learned and saw, the more I wanted to explore…so I ended up traveling for a total of about three years to very remote communities, for dollars a day. I stayed in guesthouses, ashrams, my tent (for many months across Africa), bungalows, on floors (even a few times on the floors of Asian Laundromats), and sometimes in bus and train stations with my backpack strapped to my body. I started out alone but sporadically met up with old friends and constantly met new people along the way as I weaved my way through Laos, China, Mongolia, Nepal, India, Swaziland, Indonesia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Croatia, Peru, Malaysia, Botswana…over fifty countries in all.

My adventures were at times rough, dirty and even dangerous (though nothing really bad ever happened), but the truth is that I gleaned an incredible education from my three-year around-the-world journey. All these diverse countries had one thing in common: they had their own secrets to health and beauty. Each had an impact on my perspective on health, and in each country I deepened my understanding of true beauty and learned powerful beauty tips I still treasure today.

Thailand was the first country I ventured to after I left Australia, and it marked my initial immersion in the wonderful world of ancient and beautifying Asian fruits, especially the legendary durian. I feasted on the abundance of local fruit, and it composed a good 70 percent of my diet. It was then that I began my lifelong obsession with young coconuts, eating them every day, and like many Thais, I began using coconut oil on my hair and my body. Acquainting myself with all the culturally important fruits made me feel closely connected to the earth there, as well as to the warm, friendly and deeply Buddhist Thai people. When I came back to the United States, I continued to study coconuts and discovered that coconut oil is amazingly beautifying: it is cholesterol free and rich in medium-chain good fats that nourish the skin.

Hunan Province, tucked away in southwest China and home to many hill-tribe villages, is another one of my favorite parts of the world. I spent several weeks bicycling across rice paddies and sleeping on the floor of rooms in guesthouses, covered by mosquito nets. I noticed that the women with beautiful, glowing skin there consumed goji berries, no dairy, very small portions of meat and lots of local vegetables. I became fascinated with the depth of natural health knowledge so prevalent in China's culture, including its focus on ancient medicinal herbs and ways to enhance the chi (or life force) of the body by treating it as a holistic unit, rather than treating only one organ at a time.

My time in the Himalayas, which included months in Nepal, Kashmir and other parts of northern India, was simply magical. It was there that I first discovered yoga, which would have a lifelong impact on me. I also enjoyed greater exposure to Ayurvedic teachings and, in particular, became fascinated with the spice turmeric, which was first given to me by a tiny elderly woman as wrinkled as a raisin who ran an Ayurvedic healing center in a mountain nook. The turmeric really helped give my skin a vibrant glow. I was thrilled to discover other natural plants that can truly clean the blood and enhance the skin. I loved the spirit of the people of India, and to this day it remains one of my favorite countries.

When I finally made my way to Africa, I was mesmerized by the gorgeous, velvety skin of African women. From teenagers to women well into their sixties, they had poreless and perfectly moisturized complexions, without a zit or wrinkle in sight. I discovered that in countries like Ethiopia they use raw shea butter on their skin, which comes from a native nut and is scraped out fresh. It furthered my belief that pure and natural moisturizers are far superior to synthetic, petroleum-based ones, which most women in the Western world use. Diet issues aside, I realized that with our plethora of eye creams, serums, sunscreens and thick, heavy night creams, American women are suffocating their skin. I decided right then that I would take the cue from African women and use natural skin products that truly nourish the skin and allow it to breathe.

When I came back from my world journey, it was not easy for me to integrate back into American life. I was trying to put it all together and figure out how to combine my passion for skin care, health and nutrition. The first thing I did was get a job at one of the biggest beauty companies in the world. I wanted an inside glimpse into the beauty world to see if I could use my experiences there. But big corporate beauty was definitely not for me. I did, however, get a great education about the industry, and I learned some tricks of the trade that provided me with a foundation from which to make my dream of running my own company a reality.

Lost 5 pounds by the end of this book
By Christy
So why not give this book 5 stars? Because the diet is on the extreme side and leaves me with more questions than answers. For example, where do I find nutritional yeast? First of all, Kimberly Snyder did a wonderful job explaining how our stomach breaks down each type of food and why she recommends eating foods in a particular order to make it easier for our bodies to digest and then absorb nutrients. Her theory is that if it's easier for our bodies to digest, absorb, and eliminate, our bodies have more time to heal itself (this is where the beauty part comes in) rather than just focusing on digestion 24/7. Second, it makes sense if we cut out animal protein, dairy, alcohol, and anything else that makes our bodies acidic, from our diets and replace them with produce so that we'll be healthier and maintain our weight. It's just hard to swallow that information and put it into practice on a daily basis. This book gives you so much knowledge and then you end up feeling bad that you aren't putting everything into practice.
As you can tell, Kimberly Snyder pushes vegetarian and vegan diets as the healthiest route but she does say you don't have to give up meat all together. She recommends no more than three dinners a week with meat, preferably not land animals. She also highly suggests eating raw since none of the nutrients are lost to cooking. Again, it makes sense but dang it I like to steam my veggies! The one thing Miss Snyder recommended that I had never heard about was eating fruits by themselves and nothing afterwards for at least 20 minutes since our bodies absorb them so fast (when eaten by themselves) and make are intestines very acidic. She says that having fruit with anything else will make everything inside our intestines putrefy and take a really long time to be eliminated.
I like the green smoothie recipe and can definitely do it 5 mornings a week but not too excited about her oat groat recipe. Miss Snyder has three different phases for the detox so really everyone could manage one of those phases depending on your conviction. If you are hard core, you'll give up meat, eat mostly raw foods, go organic, and be popping tons of pills (probiotic supplements, digestive enzymes, and magnesium-oxygen supplements) each day. If you're like me, you'll be drinking the green smoothie, increase the days you're vegetarian, and just overall watch what you eat and in what order. The book is a wealth of knowledge and I can imagine most people will think it's not realistic. But, take your new found knowledge and at least try several changes and see what difference it will make.

This is a book about Lifestyle Change.
By Susan
I needed a life change.
Please note I said, "life change" not "to lose weight."

Over a month ago I began working with a trainer.
Casually, my trainer mentioned this book. I looked it up on Amazon to read reviews. Many were noncommittal about if the information was useful or not but one stuck out to me, "Fat Shaming Vegan."
I considered all the reviewer had to say and made a choice: I wanted a little fat shaming vegan influence in my life.

To be clear, I'm a meat lovin' girl from the Midwest who is not giving up meat. I am, though, ill equipped when it comes to knowing how to eat for energy instead of eating to be full.
This book gave me those tools.
A lot of it does seem hypothetical but I challenged myself to give it a shot and really stick to it. What's the worst that could happen, I could lose $10--$10 I might otherwise spend on something with NO potential to change my life?

In less than 12 hours I saw a huge difference in my energy level, and in 24 hours I could tell my body was loving the way I had eaten. In the two weeks I've been basing my food choices on these principals I have gotten more compliments on my body & skin than in the full 2 months I've been working with the trainer.
It may be the confidence that comes with knowledge or The Beauty Detox Solution actually works (I like to think it's both) but regardless, I'll take it.
I'm sticking with this "Solution" and if you feel it is potentially worth the effort than I encourage you to give it a shot.

It's all about digestion
By Beth C.
The biggest lesson for me reading this book has been the importance of digestion. Learning that has changed everything for me. I wrote her an email a few weeks ago, and since it says everything I want to say in this review, I'll just paste it here; no need to reinvent the wheel:

Hi Kimberly,
Just wanted to say that your book Beauty Detox Solutions has made such a positive difference in my life. I am now committed to eating well for digestion. I also am rediscovering a love of food; I used to go to the grocery store and leave without meals because I didn't know what to buy or how to make it work for me. I really mean it when I say I appreciate you. I first heard about you from Sally B's Skin Yummies when I interviewed her for my blog last year. She's such a great lady, and spoke highly of you! But it wasn't until a few weeks ago when I bought your book on my new eReader that I really began to digest (no pun intended, lol) your message. So I just wanted to say thanks for showing me a different way to live. Keep up the great work. And congrats on your new book and your lovely baby.

Israel's Edge: The Story of The IDF's Most Elite Unit - Talpiot, by Jason Gewirtz

How will Israel keep its strategic edge over an increasingly dangerous Iran? Israel has been preparing for this day by creating a special and secretive IDF unit called Talpiot.

Instead of being trained to fight, the few soldiers each year selected for Talpiot are taught how to think. In order to join this unit they have to commit to being in the army for ten years, rather than the three years a normal soldier serves.

Talpiots are taught advanced level physics, math and computer science as they train with soldiers from every other branch of the IDF. The result: young men and women become research and development machines. Talpiots have developed battle ready weapons that only Israel's top military officers and political leaders know about. They have also dramatically improved much of the weapons already in Israel's arsenal.

Talpiot has been tasked with keeping Israel a generation ahead of a rapidly strengthening and technologically capable Iran. Talpiots contribute to all of the areas that will be most important to the IDF as Iran becomes even more powerful including missile technology, anti-missile defense, cyber-warfare, intelligence, satellite technology and high powered imaging. Talpiot soldiers have also been a major factor in the never ending fight against Israel's other enemies and many have left the R&D lab to fly fighter planes, serve in the field as commanders of elite army ground units and at sea commanding Israel's fleet of naval ships.

After leaving the army, Talpiots have become a major force in the Israeli economy, developing some of Israel's most famous and powerful companies.

Israel's Edge contains dozens of interviews with Talpiot graduates and some of the early founders of the program. It explains Talpiot's highly successful recruiting methods and discloses many of the secrets of the program's success. The book also profiles some of the most successful businesses founded by Talpiot graduates including CheckPoint, Compugen, Anobit, recently bought by Apple, and XIV, recently bought by IBM. No other military unit has had more of an impact on the State of Israel and no other unit will have more of an impact in the years ahead. The soldiers of Talpiot are truly unsung heroes.

...you, the alumni of Talpiot, have stood at the forefront of the Israeli security-technology industry making... you are the flagship of the research and development systems of our security. --Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Israel's Edge,...sheds light on the strategically vital and secretive Talpiot IDF program, which trains select groups of soldiers in how to conduct cutting edge defense research and development.

Asked why he (Jason Gewirtz) chose to write about this particular topic, the CNBC executive said, There is no other program like Talpiot in the world and it has had an enormous impact on Israel. It is also benefiting the world in a very positive way.

...Each Talpiot graduate can make a one percent difference in a conflict or battle. They do it through technology, of course, but it is that technological advantage that gives Israel the edge it needs.

Israel must defend itself through a qualitative advantage and that is what Talpiot gives Israel the tools for this qualitative advantage that is so necessary for Israel, and the Jewish people's survival. --Yaakov Lappin, Jerusalem Post

Throughout the years, Talpiot has included and established a wide variety of unique and amazing tools that have been able to multiply the efficiency and strength of the intelligence services and military might of the IDF immeasurably. --Former Prime Minister and former Defense Minister, Ehud Barak

Israel's Edge is a well written look at how a new and vital department of the Israeli military came into being and its huge impact on the military as well as society. I learned a lot about a country that I have always been interested in and the detailed descriptions of wars, historic meetings, and momentous decisions rang true.

It is obvious from the first page that Jason Gewirtz researched this topic thoroughly. I read quite a lot of military books, both fiction and non-fiction, but I had never heard of Talpiot, which is now Israel's most elite unit. --Ray Simmons, Readers Favorite 5-Star Review

There is a new book out that is a must read for Israel fans and military buffs alike. Talpiot has been tasked with keeping Israel a generation ahead of a rapidly strengthening and technologically capable Iran, making this book extremely timely. There's something in here for history buffs, military watchers, people interested in technology and education and of course anyone interested in Israel and the Middle East. --Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, The Times of Israel

Today, the program's contributions and importance are proven and felt more than ever.--Former Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi

The Talpiot unit accentuates one of the most eminent sources of strength of the State of Israel: its human capital. --President Shimon Peres

CyberArc, a great company. CheckPoint as well. Both come from the Israel Defense Forces. CNBC Producer Jason Gewirtz coming out with a great book, Israel's Edge, about these kinds of companies that come from the IDF. It's a natural tie, that's why these stocks have done so well. --Jim Cramer, CNBC

If you went on a recruiting trip with Talpiot officers you d find 16 and 17 year old's who are simply amazing. It's like the NBA going after young ballplayers...It's actually also a good business book, part education book and part military book...The disaster of the Yom Kippur really gave birth to Talpiot and this push for modern day technology. --Nachum Segal: JM in the AM

This book is on a unique subject and an outstanding achievement. --IDF Brigadier General Uzi Eilam, former Director of Israel's Atomic Energy Commission

This is a very important and interesting book. If you want to know how Israel's military works, this is the book to read. Go out and get it. --Larry Kudlow, Nationally-syndicated talk radio host

Talpiot, the so-called Mensa of Israeli military intelligence and innovation. --Jonathan Mark, Associate Editor, Jewish Week

A comprehensive look at what many consider to be the most elite unit in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)...It also explains Talpiot's highly successful recruiting methods and discloses many of the secrets of the program's success... No other military unit has had more of an impact on the State of Israel and no other unit will have more of an impact in the years ahead. --Matzav.com

Israel's Edge is a mesmerizing story of how Israel gained an edge over its far bigger enemies. It explains how the IDF became invincible. This book tells the story of a heroic people who have survived against all odds and produced the best minds. It is a must-read if you want to understand Israel and the IDF. --The Washington book Review

I was there... the Talpiot program is a milestone chapter in the history of modern Israel
By Ilan L.
As a Talpiot graduate (Class IX) I was extremely impressed with the breadth and depth of research concerning the Talpiot program as covered by the author in this book. I can personally attest to the accuracy of many of the events outlined in the book having lived through them and having shaped others.
Talpiot is one of the crown achievements of the IDF. In a way it is a typical Israeli story: define an outrageous goal and then over deliver on it by a mile.
Yes, life during the program was hard - My class (Talpiot IX) displayed the following waterfall: 8,000 applicants (all come from the top of their high school) -> 29 candidates -> 19 graduates after 3 years of the toughest academic studies and a most grueling military training.
This by far was a defining period in my life, but more importantly a defining initiative for the IDF.
The book is such a great read for anyone who is interesting in learning more about a milestone chapter in the history of modern Israel.

A very interesting and thought provoking work!
The way Americans revere entertainers and athletes Israelis are awed and have utmost respect for Talpiot graduates.
The why, how, and history of how that came to be are in this book
Excellent read for anyone interested in military strategy, technological advancements, and the inner workings of how this tiny nation-state embedded in a sea of hatred stays ahead of those who wish to destroy it.
Well written, intricately described but fast-paced, even laugh out loud humorous at times

This is what success looks like
By Adar Novak
If you can somehow divorce yourself from the politics and the rancor of the Arab-Israeli conflict for just a moment, you just might see that Israel is the greatest aspirational success story of the last 100 years. A big reason why is its incredible amount of human capital and brain power. This book documents the latest and maybe greatest aspect of Israel's self-reliance and awareness of what it needs to succeed and survive. While the rest of the world and the politicians keep talking about how to somehow uplift those with no skills or assets, Talpiot is an example of how encouraging and utilizing those with the best skills is a more wise pursuit.

`provocative book ... This is a stimulating book on being human beings conceived as advanced and advancing children of the universe ... it's a genuinely educational experience. A Big Bang of a book.' Alan Bold, Glasgow Herald

... The Artful Universe is full of good things. s

`...he has a real knack for clearly explaining and synthesizing disparate areas of science, and the book is a marvellous assemblage of recent research on topics such as ancient astronomy, the unique features of Earth in our solar system, the origins of language acquisition, and the perception of colour and sound.' `Relating the complexity of biological species to the complexity of the universe is likely always to be daunting but this author does very well indeed without resorting to mysticism, common enough nowadays. Thus he managed to unearth a number of phenomena which are rarely adduced to support his thesis. The Cosmic Anthropological Principle
By Kristor J. Lawson
Barrow, of course, is with Frank Tipler the author of The Anthropic Cosmological Principle, which argues that the fundamental constants and initial conditions of the cosmos had to be more or less exactly as they are or life - thus our conscious, self-aware human life - could not have happened.
In The Artful Universe, Barrow explores in great and fascinating detail just exactly how the fine structure of the cosmos bears fruit in the structure of the human body, and in particular the structure of our ideas, preferences, values, aesthetic reactions, ways of thinking; our minds. The primary thrust of this wide-ranging survey is that animal minds and bodies subjected to natural selection are in big trouble if they embody propositions about the world, and therefore about the appropriate way to behave, that are in any important way essentially wrong. He argues that just as the structure of the eye constitutes evidence one way or the other for the correspondence to reality of our ideas about light, so the structure of, e.g., our mathematical faculties constitutes evidence for the mathematical structure of reality.
Barrow is terrifyingly erudite, and a clear, graceful writer. He manages to convey boatloads of highly technical concepts from numerous fields in crystalline arguments accessible to anyone with a basic scientific education. You will learn a ton from this book. You'll work for it - Barrow never condescends - but you will be well rewarded.

No mind was ever a tabula rasa
By Luc REYNAERT
John Barrow illuminates in this book the relationship between the sciences and the arts with a new perspective on our emergence in the Universe by means of natural selection.

As the philosopher Victor Zuckerkandl says (quoted in this book): 'Art does not aim at beauty. It uses beauty (or ugliness) to arrive ultimately at knowledge, at truth.' (as science)

Many natural adaptations have given rise to curious by-products, some of which have played a role in determining our aesthetic sense.

Although sometimes very tentative, this rich book sheds an insightful light on more or less hidden links, like

- the connection between the heavenly bodies and the pattern of life on earth (28 days)

- the importance of symmetry: living beings are symmetrical, which is rare for inanimate objects. Also, our evaluation of physical beauty focuses on symmetry.

- size as a key to survival, with the adage 'small is best'. 'The Almighty had an inordinate fondness of beetles.'

- the origin of painting: a natural outgrowth of the fallibility of human memory and the need to communicate. Also, the reason why we like savannah landscapes and not computer paintings because they seem unnatural.

- the Chomsky (innate patterns) / Piaget (blank slate) controversy on the origin of language

- the origin of literature: the craving for social cohesion and well-being met by oral history and stories in which the hearers appear in a leading role. More, 'The pen is mightier than the sword.'

- the origin of dance: a need for frenzied activity or heightened sensibilities in preparation for war, in celebration of fertility or birth or in mourning death. The rhythmic gyrations of primitive dance bind people together.

- the origin of music (the purest form of art): animal mating calls.

John Barrow explains clearly the relationship between music and mathematics as well as theories on mathematics (Platonism, intuitionism, inventionism, formalism) and music (absolutism and referentialism).

This book is an excellent exploration of a vast and very interesting human domain. Not to be missed.

An interesting if wordy detail of the "human connection"
By k9lin@wenet.net
The first half of the book was interesting and kept my interest enough to read every word and scrutinze every example. However, by midway, the author's points became labored and needlessly exhaustive.
I guess it took me about half the book to find out what his general points were going to be. To me the book made connections between the nature of the universe and all things (particularly humans) in it.
I really wanted to closely scrutinize the chapters on sound (I am a musician and scientist). Unfortunately, by that last third of the book, I was too fatigued by the writing style. I ended up reading a few paragraphs in each section and skimming the rest, knowing (or making a logical guess) about the rest of the material. The author's basic points had already been made.
Furthermore, I felt unsatisfied by the author's overall treatment of art (particularly music). I was hoping for something more "insightful." It seems somehow self evident that particular sights and sounds are "appealing" to us given our physiology, evolution and their relationship to the nature of the universe itself. These arguments seem like tautologies; We like what we like because we are who we are. In the end, this isn't very interesting. On the other hand I could plead guilty to expecting too much.
There is more to art and music than meets the direct senses. When you try to explain what is "more" about music, you lose the meaning. Maybe the lesson is to just play the music and let it speak for itself. If the author was trying to make this point (indirectly) it is now very well taken. It's better to explain the beauty of music with selections of Joco Pastorius...
Finally, I thought the book was in places too human centric. Clearly books are intended to be read by humans. But I thought some of the author's points of view bordered on saying human animals were somehow more "important" than others. The universe doesn't make conscious choices to anoint one animal over another. Those evaluations are (too often, unfortunately,) made by us, not nature. Free will does exist.
Given these points, I do think the book was worth reading and might even be suitable for a seminar. I took about 4 days to read the book, but maybe should have taken more time. Anyway, at best, I think this book is worth 3 stars; Not bad, not great, but worth reading and discussing with others.

What we've all been waiting for...
By Steve
This book baselines the meaning of what product management and marketing is for the industry. Not only does it describe in detail the act of managing a product from conception, through commercialization, and finally through retirement; but its inclusive nature of the other functions involved (project management, business, analysis/architecture, user experience, and Agile product owner) differentiate it from all the rest. This is the super structure I've been waiting for. Product management and development can't be done alone and this BOK finally recognizes that. It breaks away from the silo'd BOKs of the past and forces a collaborative way of thinking. As a project manager, I finally feel like PMBOK has more meaning. This is the industry anchor I've been looking for.

Need help with product management in your company? Try this.
By Don V
The ProdBOK was a multiyear activity spanning some 60 contributors. As one of those individuals, I'll provide a view of some of the goals and challenges of the book. First a brief synopsis.

Section 1 is broad primer of the background, history, roles and marketing concepts relevant to the job. For those new to the role, or those who have roles adjacent to product management, there may be some fundamentals here worth understanding. For experienced practitioners, this may be worth leafing through as refresher.

Section 2 is really the meat of the book, and walks through a seven-phase lifecycle framework from inception to retirement for a product. It attempts to capture major activities that MAY be part of the needed process for creating new products and services or advancing existing ones. It is not intended to define the only way it can be done. It also tries to identify who the major collaborators may be with product management and also the trade-offs that may exist in any specific organization. For those with more experience, there may be some guidance in getting past some issues that may be hampering you.

Section 3 is complementary to Section 2 to provide some specific examples of tools and checklists for each of the lifecycle phases.

The major goal of the book was an attempt to bring together a cohesive view of product management and to provide a useful reference for all of the activities required in delivering products to the marketplace. In that regard, it's probably more of a Product Management 101/201 reference book than an attempt to address more advanced topics like strategy, politics, conflict and other issues that can sidetrack the role.

The challenges associated with creating this book were many. First, the breadth and depth of the book required the involvement of many individuals, and weaving together many inputs in a relatively cohesive manner was no small task. My complements to the editors for their tenacity and skill in pulling it off.

Second, the role of product management across industries, companies and products varies dramatically, and trying to capture a generalized view without getting too prescriptive was a constant focus. This often required stepping back and trying a different track to cover a broader view.

Third, product management success lies more in the close association and working relationships with other functions and individuals in the company than in the rote activities and product management framework. Product management cannot succeed as an island. This book attempts to identify those needed relationships in addition to processes that have proven to be successful when applied in a collaborative environment. If you find yourself in a situation that's not effective or satisfying, this book may give some hints as to how to find a winning formula.

Lastly, your specific experience or current role definition may vary significantly from what is defined in this book. The intent is for you to identify what is working and stick to it, and there may be ideas to make it work even better. For those activities that may have challenges, or are new for the role in your company, this book may provide a foundation for getting over the hump in establishing new ways of doing business. Apply them in a way that works for you and with the support of others in your organization.

This is just the initial release of the ProdBOK, and has many opportunities for improvement going forward. Hopefully, it provides a useful first step in helping product management be successful.

Historic milestone for the Product Management professional
By Cindy F. Solomon
The ProdBOK represents a historic milestone for the profession of product management forwarding professionals engaged in managing products from inception to sunsetting, across industries, stage of growth and size of organizations. As stated in the first chapter, "It was developed to give product managers information that would motivate them to look deeper into the subject and research the far greater body of knowledge that exists within the product management domain. It is a living reference that is constantly evolving."

This volume of 346 pages represents a compilation of the most prolific writers, bloggers, thought leaders, trainers and authors currently forwarding the understanding of product management today, with input from other disciplines that intersect the product management function. This is not an academic textbook of theory, although it will no doubt be used to teach Fundamentals of Product Management 101, but the result of a collaboration of practitioners currently working in the field, striving to provide a common lexicon to forward newcomers and future product leaders.

The ProdBOK is a must own, must read, must reference for all those seeking to be product professionals, as well as hiring managers, HR departments, and companies striving to establish effective product management as a business function, hiring and onboarding new product managers, and providing a career path for product people. In Silicon Valley, many (if not most) of the best known CEOs held the title of product manager at one time in their career.

Being context sensitive, product managers require "on-the-job" direct experience and training, and now the ProdBOK will both speed the learning curve and provide validation that a foundation of product management knowledge and best practices are indeed transferable across industry and domain.

The ProdBOK is a landmark for the profession of product management and a huge accomplishment for the editors and the AIPMM. An exciting time to be entering the field and practicing the art of product management, especially when every one of the contributors are generously and actively engaged in providing the foundation for the next generation of product managers to build upon.

  • The Aeneid (/ɨˈniːɪd/; Latin: Aenēis [ae̯ˈneːɪs]) is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad, composed in the 8th century BC. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned this into a compelling founding myth or national epic that at once tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendants of the founders, heroes and gods of Rome and Troy.

    Amazon.com Review
Arma virumque cano: "I sing of warfare and a man at war." Long the bane of second-year Latin students thrust into a rhetoric of sweeping, seemingly endless sentences full of difficult verb forms and obscure words, Virgil's Aeneid finds a helpful translator in Robert Fitzgerald, who turns the lines into beautiful, accessible American English. Full of betrayal, heartache, seduction, elation, and violence, the Aeneid is the great founding epic of the Roman empire. Its pages sing of the Roman vision of self, the Roman ideal of what it meant to be a citizen of the world's greatest power. The epic's force carries across the centuries, and remains essential reading.

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Princeton scholar Fagles follows up his celebrated Iliad and Odyssey with a new, fast-moving, readable rendition of the national epic of ancient Rome. Virgil's long-renowned narrative follows the Trojan warrior Aeneas as he carries his family from his besieged, fallen home, stops in Carthage for a doomed love affair, visits the underworld and founds in Italy, through difficult combat, the settlements that will become, first the Roman republic, and then the empire Virgil knew. Recent translators (such as Allen Mandelbaum) put Virgil's meters into English blank verse. Fagles chooses to forgo meter entirely, which lets him stay literal when he wishes, and grow eloquent when he wants: "Aeneas flies ahead, spurring his dark ranks on and storming/ over the open fields like a cloudburst wiping out the sun." A substantial preface from the eminent classicist Bernard Knox discusses Virgil's place in history, while Fagles himself appends a postscript and notes. Scholars still debate whether Virgil supported or critiqued the empire's expansion; Aeneas' story might prompt new reflection now, when Americans are already thinking about international conflict and the unexpected costs of war. From The New Yorker
Fagles's new version of Virgil's epic delicately melds the stately rhythms of the original to a contemporary cadence. Having previously produced well-received translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey, he illuminates the poem's Homeric echoes while remaining faithful to Virgil's distinctive voice. Pious Aeneas, passionate Dido, and raging Turnus are driven by the desires and rivalries of the gods-but even the gods recognize their obeisance to fate, and to the foretold Roman Empire that will produce Augustus, Virgil's patron. The excellent introduction, by Bernard Knox, gives historical and literary context, and both Knox and Fagles convincingly argue the epic's continuing relevance. Fagles, writing of Virgil's sense of "the price of empire," notes that "it seems to be a price we keep on paying, in the loss of blood and treasure, time-worn faith and hard-won hope, down to the present day."

    Very readable
    By SkookumPete
There is no such thing as a "best" translation, only translations that suit one's purpose. If you want to read the Aeneid as a gripping story, Fagles's version does very well. I have just finished reading book 4, and Dido's fury, as set against the implacable higher purpose of Aeneas, has perhaps never been as vividly, even scarily, portrayed.

On the other hand, it could be argued that Fagles's verse does not convey the stately or epic quality of the Latin in the way that, for instance, Fitzgerald's does. A short comparison may suffice:

"sed nullis ille mouetur / fletibus aut uoces ullas tractabilis audit; / fata obstant placidasque uiri deus obstruit auris." (Vergil)

"But no tears move Aeneas now. / He is deaf to all appeals. He won't relent. / The Fates bar the way / and heaven blocks his gentle, human ears." (Fagles)

"But no tears moved him, no one's voice would he / Attend to tractably. The fates opposed it; / God's will blocked the man's once kindly ears." (Fitzgerald)

Fitzgerald's version is closer to the Latin (other than not using the present tense), better reflects its formal nature, and achieves a Vergilian metrical effect with the three successive beats of "God's will blocked." But Fagles's free and fluid rendition is undoubtedly more engaging to the modern reader.

Occasionally Fagles does introduce a modern idiom that is trite or jarring. For instance, when the sea-nymph speeds Aeneas's ship on its way in Book 10, she does so skillfully ("haud ignara modi") because she "knows the ropes".

The book has a useful introduction, a few notes, and a pronouncing glossary. Fagles's postscript is, however, a tedious pastiche of quotations from previous critics and could have been omitted.

The "other" side of the Trojan war
    By D. Roberts
Publius Vergilius Maro was commisioned by Caesar Augustus to author a national epic for Rome. The work which Virgil composed for this purpose was the Aeneid. It is an epic poem that tells the story of a minor character from Homer's Iliad who leads a rag-tag band from the smouldering ruins of Troy in order to found a "New Troy" to the west: Rome. It is in the Aeneid, not the Iliad (as most people who have not read the works tend to believe) that we see the spectacle of the Trojan Horse & the famous line "I do not trust Greeks bearing gifts." The Iliad ends with the death of Hektor - before the plan of the Trojan Horse is devised by Odysseus. The Odyssey picks up after the sack of Troy. The Aeneid fills in the gaps & narrates the story of the few Trojans who escape the wrath of the Greeks. According to legend, Romulus & Remes (the two brothers who eventually founded the city itself) were descendents of Aeneas. As is usual, Fitzgerald's translation is top notch. I have read Mandelbaum's rendition as well & much prefer Mr. Fitzgerald. The book also contains a useful glossary & postscript which help elucidate the allusions to Hannibal & Cleopatra which the Romans of Virgil's day would have picked up right away, but which might be unfamiliar to modern day readers. Also, it is HIGHLY recommended that one read the Iliad & the Odyssey before embarking on Virgil's work. [...] But, for a quick answer: the reason that Juno (Hera in the Greek) has a vendetta against Aeneas is due to the fact that he is Trojan. This all derives from the judgment of Paris when Juno was "jilted" by the bribe that Aphrodite offered Paris (also a Trojan). To offer any more info at this point would be too great of a digression, but what I will say is that this work is NOT (I repeat NOT) for someone to merely pick up & dive into w/out doing his or her pre-requisite reading. Do your homework, become familiar with the myths & tales of what has gone on before, then read the Aeneid. You will be glad you did, for this is an extraordinary epic. Also, for those who harbor the ambition, the university of Oxford professor Peter Levi has recently written a wonderful, succinct biography of Virgil. "The Death Of Virgil" by Hermann Broch is a mind-blowing masterpiece as well. Indeed, one can never get enough Virgil.

imagine that he almost burned it
    By M. H. Bayliss
Although Virgil spent years writing the Aeneid, by his death, he felt that it was imperfect and asked that it be burned. Luckily for all concerned, his request was denied or we'd never have this epic. If you are new to Greek and Roman epics, I'd recommend starting with the Iliad and the Odyssey first. Not only will most novices find them more readable (especially the Odyssey), any reader will pick up important background information that will help immeasurably in following the Aeneid. Although I'm a huge fan of the Aeneid and have read many of the books in the original Latin, I'd suggest to most readers just to read books 1,2,4 and 6 unless you are really drawn in. It's not that the other books are not great (they are), it's just that unless you are a specialist, you won't want to read all about the battles and extra stuff -- book 4 is the love story of Dido and Aeneus and for many is the highlight of the poem. Book 6 is the trip to to the underworld which is so important to later writers and poets like Dante, TS Eliot, etc.... The fall of Troy is contained in books 1 and 2. I enjoy Fitzgerald's translation, but as an amateur Latinist, I prefer Allan Mandelbaum's translation with Moser's illustrations. When I was translating from the Latin, only Mandelbaum was so close to the original that he could help a student. I think Mandelbaum is a genius for rendering the poem so close to the original. It's unfair to call him wooden -- Virgil wrote the whole thing in Dacytlic hexameter which is hardly wooden in Latin, although it can be repetitive at times. Not to worry -- he used a lot of spondaic substititions (altering a long, short short with a long, long) to vary the meter.
So, if you just want a taste, read books 1,2,4 and 6 and if you love it, by all means read the whole epic.
